at Rikki's Refuge

Just
when you thought the weather couldn't get any ickier .....
It
was hovering around the freezing point all night and dipped a little in the
very early morning, so we woke up with that awful stuff they call "wintery
mix" .... I call it ICK ..... cold and wet, freezing here and melting
there .... cloudy and luckily the
winds have dropped to very very light ....
having ick blown in your face is really icky !!!!
Smoky Joe was absolutely fascinated with the sleet

Smoky Joe was absolutely fascinated with the sleet
watching
it and reaching out to try and catch it !!!
Milo
peeks out to see if he's gonna brave coming out.

The
geese would occasionally run out into the ick .... then run back for cover.
See the two trucks FILLED with trash? Just a couple days too icy to get up the landfill to dump and this is what happens !!! All the animals together generate more than a pick up truck a day. All the old straw and livestock poo goes to the compost pile .... we have a different name for it .... and not to the dump.
You've learned how much must come into Rikki's to keep the animals going .... the food, the cleaning supplies, the bedding ..... and it all must go out somewhere !!!!!
The utter vastness of the daily chores and consumption is totally unbelievable, unless of course you're used to doing it every day .... then it's just routine !!!!
May the ice go away and the dump road dry up enough to get up there soon .... very very very soon !!!!
Sometimes when it gets really bad someone lends us a great big dump truck to use !!!!

That's
a long lonely looking driveway

not
a soul is going to dare this weather to come out and help us. But never fear!!! Rikki's Heroes, our staff, is here in full force making sure
every one of us has water and food and dry warm beds and everything we
need. They're about the only creatures venturing
out today ... all of us are staying under cover !!! Lucky we gotz hoomans !!!!
NO NO BELLA !!!!

NO NO BELLA !!!!
Go
get under cover ... da hoomans will your food to you, you don't need to come
out in this ick!!
The
whole planet has an ice covering.

Now
we have to worry about branches getting so heavy they break off and power lines
go down and the hoomans will have to get the generator running and then stay up
all night to make sure it keeps running so we stay safe and warm.
A little after noon we had a brief lull in the ick falling from the sky and some of the birds came out for a stroll.

And
then the rain started .....

and
it came down and down and down .....
we're just flooding .... it will
be weeks before we dry out and aren't hooman ankle deep in mud.
photo compliments of Doug Deal
The
refuge looked deserted today .... except for hoomans here or there .... all the smart creatures were staying safely
out of this ick.
Every
now and then a small parcel of geese would run out to play in a puddle
....

but
pretty soon they were running for cover too.
Here a chicken, there a duck
photo compliments of Doug Deal
Here a chicken, there a duck
would
dash out to check it out ..... and turn and run for cover.
Look at how bunched up and fluffed out those feathers are on that chicken! They really know how to poof up to trap air between the feathers for a good insulating layer. If you burrow your hands down in the feathers to the down .... ohhhh it's so warm and dry !!!!!
As evening approached, the rain tapered off, and it all began to freeze up ....

with
all flooding we'll be a solid sheet of ice by morning.
Brrrr and with thought, dear diary, I'm gonna get
me a midnight snack and go curl up under all the covers. Nighty night,
Love, Opie
thank
you for making it all possible !
