India creates new court to try environmental cases
Polluters beware: India has created a tribunal to punish those who sully
the forests or rivers or otherwise break its environmental laws.
Tuesday's announcement makes it only the third country to set up a
separate judiciary for environmental cases, after Australia and New Zealand.

'We have taken a giant step forward in having a tribunal to take quick
decisions on behalf of the people of India,' Ramesh said. Once up and
running, the National Green Tribunal can order polluters to pay civil
damages in any amount instead of the previous 25,000 rupee ($564)
liability.
Experts said the tribunal would ensure informed judges were deciding
environmental cases.

'I don't believe there is any inherent conflict between environmental
conservation and protecting community interest,' said Prodipto Ghosh, an
official with The Energy Research Institute. But 'environment- and
forest-related cases often require some special disciplinary knowledge,
which the general judiciary doesn't have.'

Philanthropist Charles Bronfman scrapped a planned bio and wrote about
his passion, explaining that donating money starts with the heart, not
the wallet. "It makes you feel very, very good that you have
accomplished something," he said. People making even small
contributions should really think about what they want to change in the
world, and which organization is most likely to fulfill that, he said.
Bronfman, the 79-year-old scion of the Seagram empire, wrote The Art of
Giving: Where the Soul Meets a Business Plan with Jeffrey Solomon,
chairman of the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies.

And remember if you want to buy his book, or anything from Amazon, go
here and you'll be feeding two cats out of one bowl as we say in the no
kill world !!! You'll get your book or mmusic or product and I'll get a
can of food!!!
http://www.amazon.com/?&tag=wwwrikkisrefu-20&camp=212361&creative=392013&linkCode=wsw&

The book is the sum of Bronfman's decades in philanthropy, going over
what worked (the Historica-Dominion Institute focusing on Canadian
history) and what didn't (a variety show that collapsed when the donors
tried to organize it themselves instead of hiring an impresario.)
Bronfman founded the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies in
Montreal in 1986. It moved to the United States in 1996 and now engages
in $220-million worth of programming, and has been hailed as a model
foundation by the Philanthropy Roundtable.

His website, 2164.net, offers decks of 25 motivational values cards
naming all manner of values from "community" to "tradition." People
sorting out their priorities can order the cards according to what each
value means to them. That can help target what charity might be most
appropriate.

All donations, large or small, trendy or traditional, can only be
effective if contributors don't shrink from asking clear-sighted,
business-like questions. This is particularly important these days when
the contracting economy has caused a net loss in charitable giving.

Thought for the Day - "Watch your thoughts, they become your words.
Watch your words, they
become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your habits. Watch
your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, it
becomes your destiny."

Remember it's pumpkin season! And EVERYBODY here - cept me and the
kitties and the dawgies - love to eat healthy yummy pumpkins!! Stop by
all the stand you see selling them - ask for the damaged ones and bring
them to us. And ask if you can take all the leftovers to bring to
Rikki's after Halloween. Often they are so happy to have somebody haul
them away. Let me know if you need help hauling!! Our volunteers are
standing by!
