March
21, 2018 - Opie's Diary of Daily Doings
at Rikki's Refuge
The
evil weather man fulfilled his evil wishes for us today and it snowed and
snowed and snowed .... but really no
more than 4" or so anywhere ..... so not so bad .... but it was coming in on top of rain that
turned into ice and then sleet and freezing rain ...... what's the difference in freezing rain and
sleet? .... or is sleet frozen rain and freezing rain is ...... hoomans ......
Anyway
.... by mid afternoon when the snow and ice was gettin heavy on the trees and
branches were sagging and we knew pretty soon we'd start hearing Snap Pop
Crackle DISASTER .... the sun poked
out briefly to save the day !!!!
Yahooo ..... Sun is my friend
!!!! It was only 35 degrees, but with that
little bit of warm and the sun .... together they melted it off the trees and
even started melting it off the ground too !!!!!
I've told you how the hoomans have to walk the fence lines twice a day to be sure everybody is safe ... well when there's something like snow going on where trees are more likely to fall .... then they have to keep doing it all day long. Cus it doesn't take long for too much snow and the tree can't hold the weight and SNAP it falls down and POP there goes somebody's fence and CRACKLE there's the sheep or the cows walking right out over that tree and mushed part of the fence ...... and DISASTER as the hoomans go running after them down the road or thru the woods !!!!!
The snow cover does give beautiful pictures for the day ..... and I gotz a whole of them for you !!!

So
here goes !!!!
Early

lingering.

It's
hard on the peacocks when it snows or sleets, they will almost never go under
cover, and their tail gets ice or snow
encrusted and they can't fly. The
hoomans have to catch them and get the snow and ice off ..... and the peacocks don't like that one little
bit !!!!! Come to think of it
.... I don't think the hoomans do
either !
Well
look at that !!! Those silly birds DID
stay on the railing all night ....
photo compliments of Doug Deal
Why
didn't you go home to Chicken City and get out of the snow you silly bird
brains !!!!
Goliath
took a leap of faith out the door into the cool morning air .....

....
and WHAT IS THIS STUFF ????
The
geese are up and about and marching on their rounds of the refuge honking and
waking every one up to let them know the sky is turning light.
Come
on .... let's get going ..... Morning Rounds

Mmmmm
no ..... no way am I coming out of
here !!!!
photo compliments of Doug Deal
If
it's wet they love it ..... no matter how cold !!!!
Do
they think they're snow geese or something?
But
not everybody does. Lots of kitties
still want to go out and they dart from one cover to the next exploring this
white world.
Some
of us would rather hang out at the food bowls and num all day than go out in
that white stuff. We've got the hoomans
convinced that we need to eat more on these cold snowy days.
And when it's gold we DO need more donations or dry and canned food. We count on YOU to keep us all warm and full !!!! www.RikkisRefuge.org/donate

The
emus HATE the snow and will do everything they possibly can to avoid walking in
it. I think maybe I need to do a
fundraiser to get boots for them. If we
got some, you think I could convince my hoomans to make sure the emus put them
on?
You
can still kiss me even if it snow this morning !
Let
it snow !!! Let it snow !!! Let it snow !!!

As
long as it's wet, it's wonderful !!!

The
sheep, who usually prefer grass and will dig snow away, decided they'd settle
for hay this morning!

And
the sun shone thru a bit to help melt the snow and ice off the trees !!!!!

The
forsythia has already bloomed

As
some of the snow melted, Madison and Lucy thought the fresh grass was better
than the dried up hay.

Uggghhhhhh

The
day got more exciting as the sun turned the snow into slush and mud !!!! These silly birds love splashing and
swimming and diving in this mess. They
may be the only ones who are going to enjoy all the mud we're gonna have for
the next few days !!!!
Something
for everyone, huh?
photo compliments of Doug Deal
As
the sun goes down .... the snow picked up with a vengeance trying to make up
for what the sun melted
photo compliments of Doug Deal
The
hoomans will stay on alert all night to watch for more snow that could bring
problems to the refuge. Someone is
always on duty in the hopes of preventing disaster .... or in finding it fast
and getting it fixed. Running a Refuge
isn't a 9 to 5 job !!!
Love,
Opie
Thank
YOU for making it all possible !
