March
20, 2018 - Opie's Diary of Daily Doings
at Rikki's Refuge
Uh
oh ..... da evil weather hooman was
bad today .... and says he gonna be worse tonight and tomorrow ..... for heaven sakes .... it's SPRING now and we
wake up to sleet !!!!!
They
say change your mind, change your life ....... That ??? Let's see
.... where's that book ....
Ahhhh I got it !!!!
This
sleet is really cool !!!!! I DO have a
reason to love the sleet! Yeah.... you heard me right .... that wintery ick ...
the stuff I always tell you I hate so much.
Well
I love wind chimes. And I have some
right out the office window. And now they tinkle cus the sleet is hitting them
!!!!!
I
think maybe I'd like a light warm breeze better .... but hey ... ya take what
ya can get, right !!!!
NO,
I think not. I think I'm NOT coming out
in the sleet.

As
what little sun we'd have today began to light up the world

the
sleet turned to rain. COLD rain
.... it never did get much above
freezing ... but enough that many of
the animals, still with their down and undercoats and extra thick layers of
winter protection .... thought it nice
enough to head out on their morning rounds.
Of course the birds loved it !!! Anything we ... no matter how cold ... is better than a dry day!!!

Each
group of animals, or individual animal, has their own routine. Even the hoomans. They set out in the chilling rain to check on everyone, all the
buildings, the fences and when all was found to be well .... the food prep areas !!!!
The geese set out on their early morning stroll all around town ..... First visiting Feline Fields, then down to Piggy Paradise, a quick pass of Doggy Downs, and after the stress of being barked at ...

they
stop for some splashing in the mud puddles !!!

Then
continue their leisurely stroll up to Chicken City, a cruise past the Day Runs
... which were eerily devoid of cats, most who do not like wet weather and stay
bed ..... on to Jackass Junction ....
Then
a long visit at Rabbit Rotunda to talk to the birds in this aviary building
..... a pass thru Bovine Boulevard
South ...

The
cows haven't started shedding out yet, maybe they knew this last (hopefully)
cold wet few days were coming. They
seem to be enjoying today's shower and a nice refreshing bath.

The
geese don't venture to Bovine Boulevard North .... but instead circle back to
the Feed Store .... and about that time, a hooman will be opening up the store
and serving breakfast.
Wanda
picks her hooman, choosing different folk on different days to accompany on
morning rounds.
BATH? I don't need a bath before going inside and
helping with food prep!
photo compliments of Doug Deal
I've
just had a shower in this lovely cool rain and done some soaking in a mud
bath.
With that thick coat made for much colder winters than we get here, Wanda really welcomes cold days. If you stuck your fingers down into her fur, you'll find it dry after you're a couple inches in. And thick and lush with downy undercoating.
Beauty waits out side Food Prep ready to help

Always
bright white clean!!! Beauty can roll
in the mud and be sparklin white minutes later !!! She's always beautiful !
Yup
!!! Stayin right here ..... warm and dry

Not
a worry in the world .... unless
breakfast is gonna be late !
WHAT
do we do at Rikki's?
photo compliments of Clarence Deal
Clarence
says: We scoop in the rain.......we scoop in the snow.....cause all of our
animal friends still need to "go" !!!!!!
Some
animals get platters, some get bowls ......
and some get

What
it really looks like from Clarence's seat

And
you better get that hay down and off those fork lifts mighty quick. You've got about 15 tons of animal headed
your way at a rapid rate of speed, many equipped with pretty devastating horns
..... if they opted to upturn that
tractor to get that hay cus the hooman wasn't moving fast enough ....
They're all friendly .... but they're HUGE .... you know what it's like when an over joyed great dane jump up ..... you topple over backwards ..... well when a 5, 6 or 7 foot tall at the shoulder 2,000 pound cow runs up greet you in joy ...... well .... I'll let you use your imagination .... and I'll tell you that's why I have my hoomans feed the cows .... no no no .... not this little orange dude ... I'm not gettin trampled .... I'm even smaller than a hooman.

Luckily,
today Clarence escapes unharmed. He
knows cow body language and what to watch out for and when to get out. That's why when you come on a visit and get
up close and personal with our cows, there will be a fence between you and them
for your protection. And for theirs,
cus when somebody gets hurt and an animal is involved, no matter how innocent
that animals is, there is a tendency to blame the animal and that often means a
death sentence. Protecting our animals
is our number one priority, and sometimes it does put some restrictions on our
visitors. We know you understand how important
it is !!!!
Feeding them over the fence, you're still quite close, close enough to get great big slobbery cow licks right across your face !!!!!
Not going to sleep on the porch railing tonight ....

....
headed off to the dry confines of Chicken City for dinner and the night. See you at the crack of dawn, snow or no
snow !!!
But
the Turkeys are !!!
photo compliments of Doug Deal
They've
been enjoying the day hanging around on railings and roofs and places they can
get a shower but keep their feet off the ground!!! They don't usually worry about muddy feet .... so I have no idea
why. But they've settled in for the
night. I bet if they get snow falling
on their heads, then they'll head to Chicken City !!!
Well,
hooman! I can tell you I'm NOT sleeping
out here on this railing .....
photo compliments of Doug Deal
so
get those opposable thumbs crankin and get this here door OPEN .... I've had enough of this rain for today. Tomorrow I shall play in snow !!!!
Love,
Opie
Thank
YOU for making it all possible !
