Big Cats have Big Appetites !!!   We can't get enough canned cat food to keep up in the winter time.  Please consider a donation of a case or two ...  we need 20 or more cases EVERY DAY !!!!    In warm weather, except for the sick and the special needs and the elderly, they only get canned food once or twice a week ....  in the really cold weather, they get it twice a day ....  Goldie was right .... there's just not enough to round with.  Don't gamble with their health .....  donate a case today !!!!

Remember Volvo?  A few years back one of our employees saw him hit by a ... you guessed it ....  Volvo late at night ... really early early one morning.  He gathered him up and rushed him back to Rikki's.  We did first aid, stopped the bleeding and stabilized.   He just sat motionless, not even following anything with his eyes.  A few hours later or doc saw him and did xrays and really checked him out.  No broken bones, but it had been a bad bad blow to his head.  He still seemed to register nothing and just sat where you put him, staring straight out, like in a total daze.  Watch and see ...  meanwhile giving him meds to hope to heal his brain.  Would he ever recover?  More than likely this would be permanent brain damage.  We decided to give him a chance and took him home with an intensive meds schedule.

At first we had to put food in his mouth and he'd swallow.  After a few weeks, food began to disappear at night.  We never saw him eat.  Nobody else could possibly be getting to his food, could they?  Is there a mouse sneaking in at night?  So we set up a camera.  It was him, in the dead of the night, he'd come alive for a couple hours, eating, dumping his litterbox, desperately trying to get out of the cage.  Then he'd go back into the trance, not even reacting as he was given meds and fluids and shots.

We decided to that he'd regained a tiny bit of his life, it was only fair to let him heal more before deciding all quality of life left him with that horrible blow to the head.

Then one day somebody opened the door and Volvo was MAD and snarling and hissing up a storm.  They were so happy to get bit while tending to his wounds that day !!!!   He was making a come back !!!  We had no idea if he'd been a feral or a friendly.  We'd gotten a found cat report and picture of him to the pound, put up his picture in places near where he was hit -- no one ever called.

He became frantic in a cage and we devoted a room in the office trailer to him.  But watch out !!!  He'd lunge for you with all claws and fangs out when you went in !!!  Only the really dedicated would dare medicate him and help him with physical therapy.

A few more months and his wounds were healed, his legs were working properly ....  especially the clawed ends !!  And we figured we could do no more good for him keeping him captive.  And so he moved to a cat house where he had other feral friends to play with and a chance to build a life.

And he did just that!!   He was a happy feral boy ... except when he saw a hooman and would hide and snarl and hiss .... for more than a year.

Then one day Volvo approached a hooman, who backed up a little in fear, but he wasn't going to bite, he wanted to rub their leg !!!   And he got a little more friendly every day.

Then one morning he wasn't there to greet the hooman.  He was curled up in a nesting box and wouldn't get up.  He was taken into the hospital where a badly infected ear was found.  Now he had to be handled several times a day to be cared for once again, and he was back in a cage in our hospital.

But he did ok.  He even started to love being patted and rubbed and held.  Now he wants so much affection he can be really distracting while you're working !!!!  And he's been utterly phobic of going back outside.  He runs and hides from open doors ....

.... Until today .... when he's decided to step out and see what it is the kitties seem to enjoy so much about the sun !!!!

Thank YOU for giving us the funds so we can have the resources to help folks like Volvo.  Not many places would have given him the chance.  It cost a lot of money to save him.  It cost a lot of human blood.  But each and every one of our animals is worth it !!!!

And YOU thru your kind and generous donations, make it possible each and EVERY DAY !!
