Good Morning Good News! Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Hi.  Opie has the day off.  Sometimes I’ve just got to let him get out and be a kid.  The little guy works so hard.

I’m Nelly, Opie’s biological mom, and I’m taking over for him today.

This about sums it up for what I think of today’s weather!!

Are you a parent?  Have a kid of your own?  An adopted kid, regardless of species?  Don’t you like to see that smile on their face when they succeed at their dreams?

Opie is such a precious little kid.  He works so hard to follow in his dad’s footsteps and to be such a good little kitty and to provide for all his friends, and even the dogs, at Rikki’s Refuge.  I know he’s a bit chubby, but he never ever eats a meal without first seeing that the other residents have all got their nums first.

Mom to mom ... parent to parent ...  can I ask you to please help my kid’s dream for Vincent’s and Kerry’s birthday come true?

Thank you for your kind and generous donations:  www.RikkisRefuge.org/Donate

You can read more about Opie’s hopes and dreams in yesterday’s edition of Good Morning Good news: http://rikkisrefuge.blogspot.com/2014/04/good-morning-good-news-april-28-2014.html

Good Morning Good News !!!! April 28, 2014

A Special Day

I know lots of you know that April 30th is my dad, Vincent D. Cat’s, birthday.  It’s also the day he crossed the Rainbow Bridge two years ago.  But did you know it’s my Grandma, Kerry’s, birthday too?  Maybe that’s why she and Vincent had such a special bond ....  they shared their birthday.  Though Grandma had been on the planet about a hundred and elebenty years before Vincent was born.

They, Dad and Grandma, had the same dreams ....  the same beliefs ....  and the same worries ....

They both dreamed of a world where everyone was nice and everybody loved everybody and all were kind to each other no matter what.  No matter what species they were, no matter if they were differently-abled, no matter anything and everything.  A world where us aminals were treated kindly and with respect.  And a world where hoomans got along with each other and worked together to make the planet nicer for all of us who share it.

They believed in doing nice things, in helping each other out, in lifting a paw to be kind.  They believed if everyone would just lend a paw instead of point a finger ..... the world would become a kinder more loving place.  And that helping would snowball.  Every time somebody helped somebody .... somebody else would help somebody else ...  and it would be come contagious.  There’d be no bad talkin and nobody hurting nobody ... cuz everybody would be helping everybody !!!

And they worried about having all the resources they need every single day to take care of all us aminals at Rikki’s Refuge.  They worried about that a lot.  Even though, with all their hard work, they’d worked out a system so it only cost $1 a day per animal ....  they still have to worry about where that $1,300 is coming from every day.  With 1300 hungry animals every morning, they have to worry where all those meals were coming from.  With so many individuals at our sanctuary having special needs, they have to worry about giving them all the care they need, every day.

And so for April 30, with so many memories, happy and sad, I’d really like to walk in my Dad’s footsteps and be a great big huge help to my Grandma as she takes care of all the animals.  I’d like to reach out like my Dad always did and try to make the world a kinder, happier and more helping place.

Would you pick one of these things to do, to help me make it a great day?

Give some extra love and kindness to someone.  Extend kindness to someone differently-abled, to a different species.  Help make peace some where, some how ....  Smile to add kindness and love to your world.  Be nice to everybody you meet.  Be the first domino in a chain of kindness, do a random act of kindness and say a little prayer that it will continue thru the next person and to the next and just keep on going ....  on and on and on .... forever !!!

Or lend a paw where it’s really needed.  Do some volunteer work.  No matter what you like, us aminals, hooman kids, babies, great great grand folks, the environment .... there’s something somewhere close to you where your helping hands can make a difference.  Pick an aminal up off the street, help a neighbor, bite your tongue when you’re tempted to make an unkind or critical or harsh remark and instead reach out a hand to that person and help .... or smile ... and reach out and help someone .... anyone.  If everyone did one kind act of lending a paw every day, what a wonderful planet we’d be living on !!!

Or help Grandma make ends meet at Rikki’s Refuge.  She always worries so about having enough nums for us all.  My pantry is low again.  That’s the cat department.  It’s always low cuz all 600 of us have great appetites !!  So I’d love to buy a pallet of canned nums to help stop some of the worry from Grandma’s mind and to give her a night she could sleep without worry.  Would you help me with that?  I found a deal where I can get 22 oz cans of nums for $1 each ....  That’s $12 for a case .... And $1452 for a pallet.  A pretty good deal if I do say so my furry little self !!!!     But I gotta order on April 30 to get this special Birthday Deal  ....   Would you help me buy a can ...  just $1 ... or a case $12 ... or two $24 ... or ten $120 ...  ??     www.RikkisRefuge.org/Donate  If you’ll help me it’ll make me so happy and I’ll feel like I’m really doing my job as Ruler of the Refuge ....  it makes me feel so good to help Grandma make ends meet and keep all us aminals fed and happy at Rikki’s !!!
Thank you,
     Love, Opie

Good Morning Good News !!!! April 24, 2014

Victor is headed off to the doc ....

He has major surgery today. Normally neutering is simple .... all his step brothers and cousins have been “done” .... but he is a cryptorchid, which means his testicles didn't come down to the right place. That “right place” means they're easy to do with relatively minor surgery. But when they're stuck in the abdomen, then it's more like spay surgery. Can be even more difficult than that ... as it can be difficult to find out where they are hiding. So why worry about it?

The problem is a cryptorchid might ... or might not ... be fertile .... and could become fertile at any time ..... and with 40 or more sisters, cousins, aunts and even his mom ...... this could result in a real population explosion .... not something we can let happen .....

Now at 4 1/2 months ... he's reaching a critical time .... if he's not "fixed" he can't live in Ramsey Residence with his kind .... just in case ......

Can't he just be kept separated from them so he doesn't have to go thru this surgery?

Well .... it's a possibility. Yet with the way the hoomans are always being outsmarted ... and the animals escaping ....

ALL the sheep and cows were out twice in the last week .... seems somebody learned how to open the clip on the chain ... they already know how to open the gate and that's why there's a clip and chain ..... now there is a padlock and the key is hidden and without opposable hooves .... hopefully they will be staying in their own pastures ....    So sorry .. it would have made a great video watching all dem hoomans round up all them critters ...  but when the “all hands on deck - emergency” bell sounded ...  nobody thought to grab a camera ... not a single hooman !!!!   Silly creatures they are, I’m telling you.

And so there is a risk every day if Victor stays on the property, even in the best fence possible .... a horny young guy can be a formidable force ... and so do we let the hoomans spend every day worrying and living in terror that if he got out ......

And so we've decided that to alleviate his stress of not being allowed to be a sheep and so the hoomans can sleep at night ....

Victor will have the surgery today .....

Paws crossed for the little guy, it's risky, but we've got the best team of docs and ruminant anesthesiologists who'll be working on him .....

He's hoping some friends will help him pay his bill to give him a normal and happy life with his family .... after being isolated for a month while there's been some danger of possible fertilization ... he so wants to see his mama and twin sister and all his friends ... and he's hoping he won't be sent out to work everyday to pay off his bill ....

if you'd like to help Victor, you can contribute towards his surgery at www.RikkisRefuge.org/Donate

Thank you !!!! We'll be on the road by 6:30 am ......

Remember ... tis the season to be speutered ..... if you haven't .... rush to the clinic ....

if you know anyone who hasn't .... grab 'em up and get 'em in !!!!!

Speuter IS the way to stop the killing in shelters.

Even if YOUR kitten or puppy finds a home .... it means another one (or cat or dog) won't .... speuter is the kinder way ..... please be a part of the solution ..... please allow no more animals born into a world where they "excess" is killed at a rate of 6-8 million a year .....

The solution is there .... Speuter Clinics everywhere ... organizations who will help to subsidize it .... in most cases speuter is cheaper than well kitten and puppy visits, vaccinations and wormings .... Please HOOMANS .... we need your help, we can't make our own speuter appointments ....

Good Morning Good News !!!! April 22, 2014

Happy Earth Day   ---  I love my earth !!!!

It’s the best planet I’ve ever lived on.  I like to try and keep my earth happy and healthy.  How about you?  Are you nice to our earth?  We have a special fruit tree program going on.  We’re planting an orchard as a border between the Education Center and a neighboring house ... it’s nice to give both of us some privacy ...  they have a great huge fancy house and probably don’t want the piggies right up against their fence ....   so we’ve put in a bit of a buffer and we’re planting fruit trees there.  If you’d like to donate one in honor of your favorite planet today, for a donation of $50, we’ll be able to get and plant a fruit tree in the orchard !!!   Thank you for helping to keep our planet nice and green and for letting there be yummy fruit for all the animals !!!   www.RikkisRefuge.org/Donate

Well ... she who bes the Great Rule Maker ....
didn't follow the rules this morning ...
and she got a good reminder why there is rules ....
(ps.  this is not an actual photo of the bear, just a representative of what he looked like, no time to grab camera!)

it was still dark when she went out .... or tried to go out .... to take out the trash ... she'd just cleaned the poopy boxes and was taking it out to the truck .... the rule says ... "Before opening the door in the dark, turn on the light and look out the long window next to the door .... look specially down near the bottom to see if skunks might be thinking about coming in for cat food .... it's real easy for them to come running in by her feet .... so far .... only opossums have, but still, it's a job to get them out and it just scares and worries and upsets everybody ... opossum ... cats .... hoomans .... but oh no .... she who makes the rules thinks she's above following the rules .... and so she just opens that door and starts out ..... and there was a baby bear looking in the window .... she did a back up real quick and shut the door !!!! No fair, I thought it'd be fund for the bear to come in and play with us ... he was just a little bitty baby bear .... His mama was in the driveway at the bottom of the steps and made a gerrrruuuppppmmmmhhhh sound and baby turned to look ... then she said geeerrrrrrooooooowwwlllllll hhhhheeerrrruuummmmpppphhhhhh reared up and headed around the house and off down the back yard ... baby flew after her .... mom decided to leave the trash by the door till it got a bit light outside. Heeee Heeee I think that's funny !!!!!

Meet Bubba and BeeBee
the oldest residents at Rikki’s Refuge ....
if we don’t count a couple of the hoomans !!!
Prayers for BeeBee today please.

Bubba (the shaggier guy on the left) and his wife BeeBee are very very elderly donkeys.  They came to Rikki’s last year when their owner passed away.  BeeBee has had foot and leg problems for many years now.  She needs special attention to her hooves to trim them just right so it puts less pressure on her joints ...  kind of like having orthopedic shoes !!   The farrier comes every month to visit her and make sure she’s comfortable.  She also gets meds for arthritis every day.

The doc is coming to see her today cuz one foot was really bothering her.  He couldn’t come at the end of last week, and lucky it’s gotten better now, but still needs to be looked at.  So paws crossed, she’ll do good with the doc today.

Thank you for your prayers for her and Bubba to have a long and healthy and pain free life.  And thank you, if you’d like to help her with her doc bill today ...  www.RikkisRefuge.org/Donate

My Uncle James Caught the Easter Bunny
“I caught the Easter Bunny sneaking around my garage! Fed her some high class salad greens and then took her to live at the nice park close by !.!”

Girl Scout Troop 527 -- you are awesome !!!!!
You’ve earned your BRONZE AWARD !!!!

Have YOU earned yours?  To earn the Bronze Award, Girl Scouts have made a promise to help others, to improve their community, and to become the best that they can be !!

That’s a pretty awesome oath, don’t you think ?

Thank you for choosing Rikki’s Refuge as your Take Action Project !!!

You got skills ????
We’re looking for a few good volunteers with good handyhooman skills.  Carpentry, roofing, repairs .....  If you got your tools and you can travel and you is creative and can work with materials we have donated ....  we need your help !!!    You got to be independent, able to work without guidance and able to figure it out !!!  We gots lots of things that need fixin after the winter ....  I don’t know much about these things being a cat and all ....  So I need to point to it .... and say ...  see, it don’t work .... you can fix now please ???     If you can think on your feet and help us out and have the tools and the time and can either scrounge thru our materials ... or can scrounge the community for them ....  please let me know !!!   Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org

Also we still have a LOT of field fencing that needs to come down about 15 miles west of Rikki’s Refuge.  It’s pulling staples out of fencing and then rolling up the fencing.  If you can transport it, that’s great ... if not, that’s ok, we got somebody with a trailer who can help too.  This is independent study !!!!   You can do it at your pace on your time ....  will you help us get this fencing for the sheep ?  Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org

One of our staff hasn’t shown up for the last three days.  It’s really critical as his counterpart is on vacation so we were really depending on him.  So we have a real 8 am to 5 pm, five day a week (ah yup, you gotta work weekends and holidays, but you’ll get two days off during the week) paying job open.

You need to have two skills, or be willing to learn them.  You need to work on meds, giving shots and pills and bathes and so on to all kinds of animals.  So you can’t be scared at all !!  No sireeee, can’t be scared of holding down a feral cat and cleaning his ears and popping him with worming meds !!!

AND you need to be a handy hooman, handy with the hammer and saws, or at least willing to learn.  Helping Doug put up fences and fix roofs and all that kind of stuff.

If you’d like to apply for a job with us, please arrive at the Education Center at Noon on a Saturday.  21410 Constitution Hwy, Rapidan VA 22733 ... at the corner of Constitution Hwy and Quarterhorse Ln.  Orientation starts at noon ....  please do not be late !!!  All applications must be in person !!!

And lastly ...  the grass is growing ...  though the sheep would probably love to get to eat it all ....  and we sure wish they could .....  we need help mowing what isn’t fenced in ....  if you’ve got mowers or weed whackers you can bring out (gas powered ...  no electric cords are long enough !!!!)  and help us mow and trim ....  please let me know !!!   Another week or two and all the animals will be lost in the jungle !!   Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org

Tis the Season every one in rescue dreads .....

It’s kitten season.  And puppy season.  And .....  First of all, please remember to spay and neuter ALL your animals.  As long as animals are dying in shelters because there are simply not enough homes ....  please don’t bring any into this world.  Every birth will mean a death in a shelter.  And yes, your clinic and spay even in advanced pregnancy.  It’s sad, but it’s far less sad than living animals dying in shelters.  Please SPEUTER and please tell everyone you know to speuter.  All yours “fixed”, think about donating to “fix” one for someone who can’t afford it.  At most SPEUTER CLINICS you’re only talking about $25-$30 for a male cat and $50-$75 for a female.  A little more for larger dogs.  You can donate to Rikki’s SPEUTER fund, or to the Pana Speuter Clinic in Guatamala, just put a note on your donation so it goes to the right place.  www.RikkisRefuge.org/Donate

Second ...  if you think this kitty is cute drinking from a bottle ....  your local shelter has orphaned kittens right now and they’d love your help raising them.  When you foster you take care of the kitty or doggy for a while.  A few weeks or months, until they’re old enough to be “fixed” and adopted or till a foster home is found.  There’s not an adoption organization out there that doesn’t need your help.  Please pick up that phone now and call your local shelter and help them to save another life.

Thirdly ....  if you can possibly take in one more real live full time forever resident ....  adopt someone today.  That purrfect kitty or doggy is waiting there for you ....   Just one more ....  if each of us could adopt just one more .....

Please help the animals !!!!

Thank you
