So Much Work Getting Ready for Winter

Vincent has done what is so traditionally done on Thanksgiving. Eaten himself into a stupor. So I, Kerry, will be bringing this Hairballs to you.

Wonderful Thanksgiving

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.  It’s a time I always give thanks for YOU.  Thanks to you for believing in my dream.  Even when some of you never thought it could never be done.  Thought this dumpy, run down old farm, could never be turned into a lifesaving haven for thousands of animals!

Remember November of 1998?

Gosh, do you remember where we were in November of 1998?  That’s when we first started hauling off trash.  First started feeding the hungry, limping, pathetic hunting dogs that stopped by.  First looked around at what would become the Neighborhoods.  Doggy Downs.  Feline Fields. Rabbit Rotunda.  Before we’d ever seen the joy on the face of a pig eating a pumpkin.  Seen a pigeon fly for the first time after spending years in a cage.  Before giving hope and salvation to thousands of animals.

And for this, for every bedraggled, broken hearted, sad, little - or big - animal that comes thru our doors and learns they will be loved again, they will be healed, they will be happy, I have YOU to thank.  By myself, I could save and care for a few dozen animals a year.  With YOU behind me, I can save and care for thousands!

Resources are Phenomenal

The resources it takes to do this are phenomenal.  It awes me every time I place an order. It’s like having a growing family and going from the single serving sizes to the family sizes to the bulk sizes.   We’ve gone from the pick up truck sizes to the tractor trailer sizes.  All because YOU allow us to save one life after another.  Over and over.

See Their Stories

Here's Gibson healed after 18 months of care!!!  Doing the Happy Dance!

Read some of their stories here!  http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Rikkis/Their%20Storiesl.html

Reflections is out and should be arriving at your home soon.  You’ll read more of their stories.  I could tell you 3 or 4 sad to glad stories a DAY for a full year and that would only tell you the stores of the ones living with us every day.  So many animal, so many stories.  Here's a sneak preview of Reflections: http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Vincent/10112220MDPNYXIG.pdf

Pete is Healed

That wouldn’t touch on the ones who come for a few weeks or months, are healed, and move on to a new forever home.  Or back to their home.  Pete got to go home.  He’d come into a shelter with an injured leg.  A lovely family adopted him, promising to finish up the vet care he needed for his injury.  After 8 months and thousands of dollars his leg still needed more care.  They had little choice but to take him back to the shelter.

Thankfully it’s one of our sister shelters who we partner with, so Pete was sent to us for rehabilitation.  We have the dedicated, trained, caring staff to spend the time working to heal one patient’s wound several times a day.  It took six weeks of intensive care.  Soaking, medicating and changing dressings many times a day.  But in six weeks his family came and adopted him again.  Seven members of the family came, three generations!  They were so happy to see him and he was so happy to see them.  We all cried as they drove down the driveway taking Pete to his forever home.

And who can Pete and his family really thank?  YOU.  YOU made it possible.  Without your donations of money, time and supplies, there is no way we could save so many animals.  Sometimes it’s the cost of medical treatment, a needed surgery or just vaccinations that can prevent someone from keeping their pet.  YOU make it possible for them to stay together.

Left Behind

Imagine when someone dies and leaves behind their four beloved pets who’ve lived together forever.  They’re now elderly and one of them hardly stands a chance of getting out of a shelter alive, let alone all four of them living their lives out together.  Because of YOU we are able to give them all four a forever home together where that bond of love and friendship does not need to be broken.  They can live the rest of their natural lives happily together.  They may have lost their human, but YOU did not allow them to loose one another.

Fixing the Animals

YOU know how important “fixing” the animals is.  It’s a huge step in stopping the over population who ends up euthanized in shelters across the nation.  YOU allow us to reach out and educate on the necessity of speutering, to teach in classrooms, to speak at organizations and groups.

Save the Humans Too

Our initial goal was to save animals.  Pure and simple. Save the needy, homeless, unloved animals.  And by doing that work we find we’re doing so much more and more every year.  Handicapped adults and kids come to volunteer.  They’re helping us.  And we see how much we’re helping them.  Giving them an emotional outlet they can find so hard to share with other people.  Giving them job skills that will allow them to improve their lives.  Teaching responsibility, respect, love and caring. It benefits all the animals, and it benefits all the people they’ll come in contact with during their lives.  YOU have made this possible.  Click for more photos.

Help the Community

YOU have helped the community.  We need a fence built, people come to volunteer and we teach them how to use the tools, how to measure, how to build.  We teach people how to build animal shelters, dog houses, bird feeders.  We teach them how to do home improvements and we repair and rebuild things around here.  Now they can go home and do it themselves!!  It gives them confidence, gives them the opportunity to have that fence they so badly needed but couldn’t afford, to insulate their doors and windows.  It changes their lives.  Often once they realize what they can do, the sky’s the limit!!

Volunteers!

When we reach out to one another - regardless of species - we do amazing things together.  Truly amazing!  I’m as proud of my volunteers as I am of my animals.

Jan

I’ve watched Jan grow from a shy person, uncomfortable meeting new people, to an outgoing, happy, energetic person giving tours and meeting new people every week; from writing little “Please come to our Open House” ads to wonderful PR articles.

Visiting at an Open House

Rene

Rene came to volunteer. Disgusted with how long it was taking to finish the new leukemia room, she said, “How hard can this be?”  She took up a hammer and saw and took off and turned into the Tool Gal.  She thought the place looked dull and she took up a paint brush and the Snoopy mural was born.  She’d become an artist.  Garfield, Piggies and The Feed Store went up next.

And now Rene is selling handcrafts thru Sherri’s Shop in down town Orange!  She gives a portion of the proceeds to Rikki’s to feed the animals.

That’s just two of 20 volunteer stories I could tell you.  By making Rikki’s possible YOU made these life changes possible for our volunteers too.

It’s truly endless - what YOU’ve done.  And we will continue to grow and to touch more and more hearts every year with YOU by our side!

THANK YOU !!!!!  YOU ARE MY HEROES.

Giant Donation of Cat Litter

Huge thank you to Mike Wood and everyone who worked together to bring in the giant donation of cat litter.  What a fabulous donation!!!

Canned Cat Food

We never get enough canned cat and dog food donated.  Especially canned cat food.  With 659 cats it takes cases and cases a day.  I’ve just had over $1,000 of canned cat food delivered.  I’ve got the bill sitting here that must be paid.  Please help us if you can.

Supplies Needed

Seems laundry detergent is always something we need too.  When you head out to visit on the weekends please bring a handful of necessities with you.  Cleaning supplies, paper towels, canned food.  Thank you Cindy for the huge bleach donation.  That’s something we use by the gallon!

Angel Trees

Katarina has put up beautiful Angel Trees at many locations.  Stop by and fulfill a wish for one of the animals!

Take a Look At This!
www.optimistforever.wordpress.com
Positive thought counseling makes a great gift! Many people get depressed during the holidays because they are alone, have to work, etc. And sometimes they get upset because they will be seeing family members with whom they may have some differences.

From Elizabeth Witt: Just FYI, Amazon is having a bunch of pet-related lightning deals today.  Beds, clippers, automatic feeders, drinking fountains, litter boxes etc.

Be sure to enter Amazon thru our shopping page and your purchase will help feed ME and my friends here !!!!    http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Rikkis/ShopAndSave.html

If you click on the red link on the top right, it will take you to the Cyber Monday (LOL - week long) deals. The lightning deals are in a window you can scroll left and right. You don't find out the prices until the deal is available, but you can see what most of the items are going to be.

Good Morning Good News now on MY blog too http://rikkisrefuge.blogspot.com
Soon I'll get the pictures embedded for even more fun!!!!

Check it out !!! Katarina is at it again!!! Angel Trees all over town!!!  Stop in and fulfill our Christmas Wishes, or help Katarina with the program!  katarinagalvin@yahoo.com  Aren't they lovely?

Do you like parades?
I do and I'm hoping to get to go! This will be our very first parade float!!!

Come help Katarina katarinagalvin@yahoo.com build our float!!

We'll be in the Orange County Christmas Parade, Sunday Dec. 5th, that's this SUNDAY in the Town of Orange. Bob Wallace lent us his trailer for the float. The theme of the parade is the twelve days of Christmas. It would be so awesome if we could put our twist on things to make it the twelve animals of Christmas!

The plan is to build the float on Saturday Dec 4th from 10am - 3pm. Then we can meet at the Refuge on Sunday at 12 noon to get into any costumes we come up with and pretty much finish anything that needs to be done.

Plus, we'll get in the spirit with Christmas refreshments available to all volunteers and staff members =0)

I have a few ideas on what the float could look like but please let me know if your creativity kicks in and you have any good ideas on how we can do this. My ideas include a big Vincent sitting on the float with a Santa hat and then us all dressed as different animals....handing out candy canes with Vote for Rikki's info and Merry Christmas attached...its all very flexible right now so please let me know your great ideas!

(ed. I see no need for flexibility here - I LOVE the plan!)

Or would YOU rather be on TV!!
Who wants to be in a TV Segment for Rikki's Refuge? You can choose the topic you want to talk about, anything from volunteering to fundraising, to what we do at Rikki's, to upcoming events.

If you want we can even give you info to talk about.

It's really fun, very easy and a great experience. If we get a few volunteers who will be able to film next week the segment will be played the week before Christmas!!

If you are interested please let me katarinagalvin@yahoo.com or Ken kidbud88@hotmail.com know asap so he can get the studio reserved.

Here's YOUR chance to be a STAR and help the animals of Rikki's!!!

Quote of The Week from GPAAR - "People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be." Author - Abraham Lincoln

Rene says get on down to Sherri's Shop in down town Orange by the tracks and buy your holiday handcrafted signs!!! Part of the proceeds goes to Rikki's and she promised it's all for Fancy Feast! http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/5221582536/

Ken reports in that Dartagnan is eating like a champ again! Yippee. He adopted Dartagnan several months back. Suddenly he went on a hunger strike. He found a turtle doc expert - not your every day doc - and they were trying all kinds of things to get him eating again. Another handicapped turtle came in. He'd lost both front feet in an accident. Ken adopted him and as soon as Dartagnan saw him eating, he said, "Hi ya pal, been waiting for somebody to share dinner with!" And now they're both very happy. Amazing what a friend can do!!!

We just got a check from Krogers!!! Now that makes a nice stocking stuffer!!! Not MY check. But a Kroger Kare Kard from Rikki's. Buy your card for $5 and get $5 of groceries at Krogers. Every time you reload and use your card, Kroger will make a donation to Rikki's. It's FREE for you!!! Check out the details at http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Rikkis/kroger.html It's good at all Kroger affiliates (see the web site) all across the USA!!!!

Sorry, I missed reading Reflections to you Yesterday and on
Thanksgiving. Sorry sorry. OK turn the page, here's page 4 - featuring
Valerie Fast, James Davis, Paul Fetzer, Billy Crips, Wayne Morris,
Polly, Mary Walker, Cindy Wright, Walker, Melissa Felts
http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Vincent/10112204OMATMXJC.pdf

You all help my Auntie Candy, ya hear!

Happy Day after Thanksgiving, yall!
I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. My sister cooked
dinner and she sent home leftovers! We love our succotash! And the
commute was the best one that I can remember.
Sorry I haven't contact everyone earlier, but I've been busy hauling
pumpkins almost every day since Oct 24. That's a lot of miles and a lot
of pumpkins.

(ok ok so we're jumping out of order here but I just have to show you
the pumpkins, so here's page 7 from Reflections, featuring Candy Erhard,
Lloyd Dolan, Cindy Wright, Fred Friedman, Andi Dies, Larry ramsey, Earl,
Miss Piggy: http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Vincent/10112207GRHQAMIR.pdf )

The good thing is that the pumpkins this year were beautiful, and
should keep for awhile. The longer they keep, the more we save on food
bills. Of course, Vincent and his buddies put all that money to good
use keeping the canned cat food companies in business.
We are scheduled to "Wrap for Rikki's Refuge" out at the Banes and
Nobles Booksellers on Rt 50 in Falls Church on Dec 20 and 21, 2010, from
4 to 10 pm. It probably would be best to break this into two 3 hour
shifts (4 - 7 and 7 - 10). I will kick off the wrapping on Dec 20 at 4
pm turning it over to Fred at 7 pm. Fred will open up on Dec 21 turning
over to me to "wrap things up" (sorry, I just couldn't let that one go
;) ). As you remember, they furnish all the wrapping paper and tape. I
just think packages look better with ribbon and bows, so I donate them.
If you can help on either of these days, Fred and I would love your
help. If you can't do a 3 hour shift, we can work around that (but just
remember what the traffic will be like Christmas week in the Falls
Church area). Better to be safe and dry inside a nice warm bookstore
with a Starbucks (hey, do they sell Fancy Feast?) and bathrooms than
stuck in a traffic jam in a sea of red and white lights. It would be
nice if we could have at least 2 wrappers in addition to Fred and
myself. Just let me know which day and what time you can help.
Just so you know, Paul's surgery was successful. Thanks for everyone
that jumped in last year and made it possible for me to take care of
him. I've kept you all in our prayers ever since.

So you all got to pig out on good nums yesterday? We did too. But we
won't for long. Canned cat food runs out on Saturday. Uh Oh. If
you're visiting this weekend, please bring some. I know we eat a lot
but there IS a lot of us!

Auntie Candy is ordering $1,005.48 of cat food from Wegmans for us
today. They let us have the 13.2 oz cans for 63 cents. That's the same
as 26 cents for a regular 5.5 oz can, and it's good stuff too. Mommey
can get it a tiny bit cheaper, 25 cents a can, in Waynesboro but she
can't get over the mountains and thru the woods and back here in time
before we go hungry. And mommey never allows us to go hungry.

Nice people - Dennis and Crystal you available? - will pick it up for us
in Fredericksburg on Monday or Tuesday when it comes from the warehouse
and bring it all the way out here for us. And then it'll last about two
weeks!!! I know, I know, we eat. But YOU do too!!!!!

If you can't stop by and bring a case or two, would you mind chipping in
a buck or two?

Thank you Kathy for keeping tack of where in the world is Rikki's!!!!
Nothing is secret in the world anymore is it?? I clicked on

what camera mom used to take the picture!!!! Gee I better behave, I
don't want anybody seeing me pulling out mom's credit card and helping
out on that chipin!!!!

Are you Social Media Socially Savvy?
I just joined Diggs this morning. There are so many "things" out there
and so many ways to get the word out about Rikki's and about saving
animals. I just can't keep my paws flying fast enough to do it all. I
need some help. It's ok if you have opposable thumbs or not. I don't
care how many legs you have or how long your ears are - if you can help
me keep up with all the neat new things on the web I NEED YOU!!!!

Also if you're an artist and want some exposure, I need sketches,
drawings, cartoons, note cards, calendars, all kinds of things all about
the animals at Rikki's. Can you draw? How about a daily drawing or
cartoon to share???

What's your talent? Tell me and I bet we can team up with something
good!!!!

Can you wear a Santa Suit, snap a camera, wrap gifts, help distribute
Christmas Wish Trees, there's so much to do and Nanny and me just can't
keep up with it all ... come on board and be a part of Vincent's Heroes
Team!!!

Walker has something to share. It's pure fiction so don't believe a
word of it!!!
