Round the Refuge
The recent ice storm hit us really hard.  We’ve never had the funds to finish all the planned upgrades after the horrible roof collapsing episode in the winter of 2005.  Last year’s snow load put a strain on things but with enough people here to help clean the roofs as fast as the snow fell we had very little damage.  This year was a different story.  We were too short on hands to get the job done.  Now we’re seeing the partially complete repairs weaken.  And a couple small areas collapse.

Feline Fields and Rabbit Rotunda need some structural work.  We’re going to need about 130 2x4 x 14+ foot pressure treated boards and another 130 4x4 x 12 foot pressure treated boards for Feline Fields.  We’re starting with Feline Fields as the structure there is weakest.

Then we’ll move on to Rabbit Rotunda, then Doggy Downs has a couple roofs hat have been leaking.  They’re covered with tarps, but we need a permanent fix pretty soon.

Very very sad news.  Rabbit Rotunda II that was under construction and almost ready for occupancy, suffered a lot of damage.  Thankfully no one was living there yet.  This is especially sad for the rabbits and guinea pigs and pigeons that were on the waiting list hoping to have a new home this spring.  With your help we can get that fixed and ready soon!!

If you can spare a few $s to help us buy some lumber, we’d really appreciate it.

Colleen writes in: I am a volunteer with SNAP in Louisa County.  I recently trapped a beautiful calico cat for spay.  After getting her home that night, I learned she is actually just a scared domestic - and has slowly been warming up to me over the last week.  She loves to be brushed, you can pet her, pick her up, and snuggle with her, but she is shy.  We discovered at the feral spay/neuter cat clinic held this last Saturday, that she was already spayed.  Our county shelter euthanizes 80% of cats and with her being shy, she has no chance here.  I hate to return her to the gas station where I rescued her from.  Do you know anyone who can foster this cat until she can be placed permanently?

If you can help please contact Colleen at ccole@tgblaw.com

Oh gosh can somebody please find enough money to build more 9th Life space?  We take care of everybody that we can.  Our building is so small and it’s totally full.  That means we can't take more kitties and dawggies and wabbits and all who really need the kind of care we can offer.  I cry every time I hear mom turning somebody away.  So many of the elderly, the handicapped, the diabetics, the kidney patients have nobody but us to care.  No place but Rikki’s to go.  Oh so many need us, no other place to go. They can't live in feral / semi feral barn style housing. They need the regular household type accommodations with regular heating and cooling.  We have only five rooms in this old farm house.  So sad ... wipes eyes.

If you can help me with fundraising I’d so appreciate it.  You can help from anywhere in the world.  Paypal is universal so we all live in the same world now!!!

Right now just feeding everybody is a challenge. And we need about $12,000 to do upgrades and repairs from ice damage and to properly reinforce everything so we don't have ice problems in the future. I don't know what a new building would run. Somebody said they could a do a room for about $15,000. I've been trying to meet our Valentine Chip in before the February 14th deadline. If you can help it’d be wonderful.    http://rikkisrefuge.chipin.com/double-your-love

We manage to spend only 25 cents per meal and only an average of $1 a day per animal to take care of them. But with 1250 animals we need $1250 a day just for the basics. We need all the help we can get with fundraising. It's probably our biggest need. Anybody up for helping please HELP !!!!! Love you all.

I want to save so many. I want to have all the money we can use to save animals at Rikki's and all the money needed to share it with other groups and people saving animals the world over. The money's there, just sitting in banks all over. We just need to reach the people who’d want to share with the animals.

Cuz The Animals Matter

Pegasus Saved
Barbara, a Rikki’s Volunteer,  volunteered at the Voices for Animals Feral Cat Speuter Clinic in Charlottesville.  Pegasus was a black and white kitty who’d been trapped and brought in.  He was looking down.  Terribly skinny, I mean terribly, hips sticking out.  Gooey on his eyes and nose.  Lungs ok but icky cold and snotty.  Injured hind foot.  He was under anesthesia and they decided to put him to sleep because in his condition he couldn’t go back to his feral colony.   Barbara began to cry and said, the poor guy, he’s been starving.  Is it right to just kill him cuz he’s had no food?  Can’t we try to save him?  Doesn’t he at least deserve a chance?  She called real quick and said can Rikki’s try?

Yes, we would try!!  Sometimes you can’t win.  But lots of time if you really try, you can.  And we are going to give Pegasus the best try we can.

Ron, who was out working, dropped what he was doing and rushed off to Charlottesville to pick Pegasus up.  We were very anxious for him to hurry hurry and get back so we could assess poor Pegasus and get to work saving him.  When he arrived two hours later, he was still a bit unconscious from the anesthesia.  His heart seemed a bit faint.  We they held him and warmed him up and rubbed him, and soon he began to wake up.  I talked to the doc who was working at the clinic and got Pegasus started on meds.

Eating, tlc and just nursing care is what the poor guy needed.  He’s not very old either.  By 6 pm he was awake and starting to eat.  He’s eating canned food like he’ll never see any more.  Poor baby.

Pegasus is doing great so far.  His cold was a minor thing, and he’s over it.  He's had horrible poos and that’s almost cleared up.  He's eating everything in sight.  Hissing at us but I think will be friendly.  Letting us pat him while he eats and on his lower back.  Still scared of having his head scratched.

Pegusus had a partially healed injury to a hind leg.  He may have been so sick with that, it had obviously been horribly infected, that he couldn’t get out to find food for several days or a week.  This may be why he was so emaciated.  As the doctor at the clinic said, “I hope it’s just lack of groceries that caused his emaciated look.”

Pegasus looking worried, wondering if there are enough groceries for him.

Please buy a few cans of food for Pegasus so he doesn’t have to worry.

Remember Patches?
Valerie saw him hit by a car and she scooped him up determined to save his life.  He’s recovered very well from a bad head injury.  His vision is not yet 100% but it’s adequate for him to get around the 9th Life Center.  He’s made a lot of friends since being able to get out of the hospital and moving into the 9th Life Center for his convalescence.

Meet Doggie Buster

Operation Loose Goose

Maverick, as she’s come to be known, in the arms of a waterfowl rescuer, is doing just fine, and thanks everyone for their part in her rescue.   Thank you to a Rikki’s Volunteer who saw this goose in distress and reported it to Rikki’s and then once a Waterfowl Rehabber was contacted and a plan laid out, rounded up the rescue party.  It takes a lot of people to catch a goose on a semi frozen pond!!!    YEAHHHHH  Successful rescue

Amelia
Saved from Dog Fighting

Wonderful News for Dotty
Dotty was thought to be a feral kitty, trapped cuz she was hanging out in the Joseph’s yard.  They vetted her and were letting her chill in an upstairs bedroom till she could get a ride to Rikki’s.  She was going to live in a feral kitty house here at Rikki’s Refuge.  She started to be a be friendly. And her saviour has fallen in love and named her Dotty,  She’ll be staying in her wonderful forever home now!!!   YEAHHHHHHH

Meet Randolph the Rooster

Gwen and Jessie James Saved!
Ferry God Mother Candy trecked from her home into Washington DC, then 100 miles to RIkki’s Refuge and then all the way back to save Gwen and Jessie James.  Gwen had been a stray and is feluk positive.  There aren’t many places for cats with feluk to go.  Thankfully we are abot to house them in their own areas at Rikki’s Refuge.  This gives them the chance to live out their natural lives and keeps them from infecting other kitties.

Three year old Jessie James was dumped at a shelter by his owners, he’d been allowed to roam the streets of DC and now tests positive for FIV.  Though kitties with FIV seem to have few problems once they are speutered, the myths abound, so many are just killed instead of given a chance at life.

Gwen and Jessie James are now comfortably resting in quarantine waiting the prescribed time to join their new families here at Rikki’s Refuge.

Need Help Surveying
Good news!!!  We’re talking to the game warden who came out and helped get rid of the bad trespassing poachers on New Years Day.  She’s going to come out and walk property lines so she knows where to be patrolling next hunting season.

Do you have survey equipment?  Are you a surveyor who can help out for a few hours?  We have the corners marked and now we need help getting the lines in between done properly.   Please contact me if you can help with this.  Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org  Joe Callahan can help, and show you the corners, but he needs someone with proper survey equipment to make sure those lines are straight and accurate.

Meet Helen and Adam
Adam and Helen came out and washed the huge pile of dishes.  They’d brought fruits and veggies for the Rabbit s and Guinea Pigs and while up there feeding them, they also cleaned Rabbit Rotunda.  Any help feeding and cleaning is always a big help.  it’s a little less my hooman staff has to do so then they have time to try and catch up on their long long list of TO DO.

Bob’s Not Quite IN the Dog House
Bob picked up a dog house someone donated and brought it out.  It’s the coolest, most unique dog house you’ve ever seen.

You’re really sure that’s a dog house?  The kitties .......

Here’s Bob explaining the origin of the dog house!

Be a Docent
Be the Refuge Greeter on some Saturdays from noon - 2 pm.  Meet visitors and donors during Donation Drop Off and help them unload the goodies.

You can learn to give tours too so you can show folks around the different Animal Neighborhoods at Rikki’s Refuge.

Cindy can train you to be a Saturday Docent: cindyw2525@aol.com

Ken earned his Docent Badge now so you’ll see him from time to time on Saturday during Donation Drop Off, noon - 2 pm.  Ken helped a nice couple who came out to donate some funds and supplies.  Their friends, Don and Libby, told them about Rikki’s Refuge.  Don and Libby first learned of Rikki’s from a story in the Free Lance Star in 2005 and have been supporters ever since.  Make sure you tell your friends!  I bet you have several friends who don’t even know about Rikki’s Refuge and I bet they’d love to make our dream a reality!!  So tell your friends!

Grace and Toni came out to volunteer and help with the Sunday Tour.  Tour every Sunday at Noon this year!!  Grace joined Teen Care last summer and really stood out as a leader.  She’s been a tremendous help to us animals.  She’s a Docent and a Tour Guide and knows how to take care of most all the animals!

Community Service
Rikki’s Refuge is a great place to do Community Service.  Two teens are working on fulfilling some hours and Katarina led them thru many chores.  Many High Schools require Community Service now as part of the curriculum of raising socially conscious individuals.  It counts for lots of points on College Applications too.  Some work places give a day or two a year paid leave to their staff to do Community Service.  And of course minor offenses are often assigned community service in court.  Check in first if you need to do court ordered Community Service, depending on the nature of the offense, you may be able to do it at Rikki’s.  Any one who’s committed any form of animal abuse, hooman abuse or violent acts cannot volunteer at Rikki’s, Community Service or not.

One of the teen boys doing Community Service has his dad pick him up in the afternoon.  He gave his dad a quick tour of the Refuge and he was so impressed he wants to volunteer too!

The first time you visit you’ll have to read over the rules and regs and fill out a form stating that you agree and that you fit in certain guidelines.

And speaking of another kind of Community Service, Jan is now supporting 29 classrooms around the country who receive Kind News.  Kind News is a monthly publication that arrives to sponsored classrooms monthly with an issues for each child and a special teaching edition for the teacher.  These classrooms are headed up by  teachers who’ve made the commitment to teach Humane Education to their kids and who follow the guides and outlines and study sessions in Kind News!

If you donate just $30, we’ll be able to sponsor another classroom!

Sneak Peek at
Vincent’s Shopping List
What he NEEDS this week

Donation Drop off Noon - 2 pm every Saturday !!!

Canned Cat Food - this will almost always be at the top of the list in the winter time.  Stock up when you get a chance or see a sale!

This week we need canned dog food too.

Trash bags and paper towels are running low too.

If you have any lumber or can buy some we need about 130 2x4 x 14+ foot pressure treated boards and another 130 4x4 x 12 foot pressure treated boards.

Our garden hoses for getting water to the animal areas are getting holey!!!  Pick up new ones when you see them on sale.  Also straight nozzles - something that will fit thru a 2 inch x 2 inch opening so they slide into the fenced areas easy.

We desperately need cash to pay the propane and electric bills, also have to pay off the co-op for the feed bill, we’re using lost of hay right now, and the docs and drug companies need some funds too!!  Can you spare a buck or two?  Please help, February is such a difficult month to get thru.

Some one in Lake Arrowhead in Stafford VA has a bottle of insulin (the kind we use) and a box of syringes to donate to us.  Who can pick them up and bring them here?  Insulin needs to be kept cool.  Not out of the fridge for more than 4 hours and not heated up above like 70.  So can’t leave in a hot car.  A cooler and small ice pack or pack of frozen veggies will do the trick!!!  Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org if you can help and I’ll give you the contact’s name and number.

Check out what others have for sale.

There’s some really cute Vintage Kitty Postcards!

Melissa is helping with listings - so if you have something you'd like to sell to benefit Rikki's, if you can do pictures and shipping (if you can't donate the shipping cost we can reimburse by paypal or check) let me know and I can put you in touch with Melissa our ebay helper.  dogslife24@comcast.net

Help us build out Ebay store.  Got cool things to sell that you’d like to see benefit Rikki’s?   Mr. Callahan wants to open Callahan’s Corner of military memorabilia and collectables.   He says if you have any kind of military items, the older the better, he’ll clean ‘em up, appraise them, and list them on Rikki’s store to help the animals!!!  100% of proceeds to the animals.  Check hi and low.  Check your basement.  Check your attic.  And let me know Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org

Thank YOU Culpeper Pharmacy

(540) 825-7576 • 261 Southgate Shopping Center, Culpeper, VA

Culpeper Pharmacy has been providing for our furry families’ prescription and home care needs since 2003 (and before that when they had a pharmacy in Orange). Located in the Southgate Shopping Center, next to the Culpeper Regional Library, Culpeper Pharmacy has been proud to help Rikki's Refuge and all their other customers with a full range of home health care needs. From prescriptions and diabetic supplies to Power Wheelchairs, Lift Chairs and more. How can they help you today?

Bill Morris and Gordon Atkins have been taking special care of the critters in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center for almost as long as Rikki's Refuge has been here.  Sometimes it's filling a normal prescription.  Sometimes it requires research to find the right variation of the medication our veterinarians want for us.  Sometimes it's adjusting the dosage for us little guys.  Sometimes it's answering our questions.  Always it's researching to find us the best possible deal and placing special orders for us.

Bill and Gordon and Culpeper Pharmacy are one big reason we're able to take care of so many on such a short little shoestring.

And, this Christmas, they stretch their shoestring even further.  They donated just about a whole month's worth of pharmacy supplies to Rikki's Refuge, all the routine things used by the patients of the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center.  That amounted to a whole lot of money, hundreds of dollars, and a great big huge help to us at Rikki's Refuge.

Thank you Bill and Gordon for taking care of me and all my special needs and for running such a wonderful business and being so kind and compassionate to all your customers.  If everybody knew you, there wouldn't be any other pharmacies for 100 miles around!

Culpeper Pharmacy is good people running a good business.  Tell ‘em Vincent sent you!

Thank you for your love and support.
Together we’re making a marvelous difference!!!

LOVE,
VINCENT
