It looks as though the days of chowing down on Big Macs are over for former President Bill Clinton. According to Politico.com, the 42nd leader of the free world was just honored by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for adopting a vegan diet.
The animal rights organization named the 64-year-old as their 2010 Person of the Year.
"Bill Clinton won not only because he's the most prominent person to go vegan this year but also because he used his platform to articulate the reasons why a plant-based diet is the most healthy diet," said PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews.
Clinton reportedly decided to shed some weight for his daughter Chelsea's wedding to Marc Mezvinsky, which took place this summer. He has spoken about his success at losing 24 pounds after following the strict meal regimen.
According to the American Dietetic Association, a plant-based diet mostly consists of a healthy variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains. Those who take on this plan may not only be contributing to animal rights causes, but could decrease their chances of being diagnosed with cancer.
