Good Times in the News
Look for Treasure. Your Key to Success.
David J. Pollay, HappyNews Columnist

I learned early in life that it’s easy to be a critic. You can find fault with anything. The challenge is to sift through life looking for the good things, opportunities, and lessons to be learned.

(1) Dad’s view
When I was growing up in Milwaukee, the largest electronics superstore in the area was a company called American TV. And the owner, Len Mattioli, was famous in Wisconsin. He was known as “Crazy TV Lenny” and he was constantly pitching his store on radio and television. He was always yelling in his ads: “Buy a washer, get a bike! Buy a TV, get a bike!” He hawked his products at full volume.

One day I said to my father, “Dad this guy is nuts. He’s always yelling!” And my father said to me, “David, he’s a good businessman.”

My dad was right: Dad could see that American TV’s business was growing quickly. Mattioli did more than yell. Crazy TV Lenny found a way to draw people into his store. In fact, Mattioli took the original store and turned it into a chain of fifteen electronics superstores in the Midwest.

(2) Bill’s view
I met Bill Zito the summer before we both left Milwaukee for Yale University. One day we were sitting in the upper grandstand at the old County Stadium watching the Milwaukee Brewers play. I was asking him about all the players. Bill knew them: He had been the Brewers’ official batboy.
So, I asked him: “What’s Cecil Cooper like?”
Bill said: “Excellent guy.”
“How about Paul Molitor?”
“Excellent guy.”
“And what about Robin Yount?”
“Super-excellent guy.”
And this is how the conversation went as I talked to Bill about half the roster. I was surprised that everyone was an “excellent” guy. We all have heard so much in the news about professional ballplayers; I thought at least someone would not be so great. But in Bill’s eyes, everyone I asked about was an excellent or a super-excellent guy.
Bill’s ability to see the good in players has served him well. He is now a sports agent with forty professional hockey players on his roster.

(3) Preston’s view
Twenty years ago in New York City I was with my good friend Preston Kevin Lewis. We were looking for music in a record store when a song began to play. I leaned over the record bin and said, “I don’t like this music.” And Preston quietly said, “It doesn’t do a lot for me,” and kept looking through the stack of records. While the song I pointed out wasn’t his favorite, Preston didn’t spend any time focusing on the music he didn’t like; instead he searched for the music he did like. Preston now works for Warner Brothers, after stints with HBO Home Video, MTV, and Disney.

A lesson learned: Find the treasures
I remember these stories because they are woven together in a lesson that has stuck with me over the past two decades: When you look for the good, and when you expect the good, you’ll find the good. When you want to learn something new, there’s a treasure to be found.

This week
This week, observe yourself assessing the day-to-day events of your life, and the people you encounter. What do you say to yourself about them? What do you say to others?

Then, here’s the big question. When you make these comments publicly or privately, ask yourself: “What am I learning right now?” Do my comments and observations help me understand why someone is successful, why a business grows, and how a product sells?”

You will likely discover that your quick criticisms seldom lead you anywhere; they close the doors of your curiosity and creativity. Your life will remain as it is.

But when you tune your mind to look for the hidden treasures in life, you will discover lessons that you can apply to your own goals and dreams. You will advance your life.

Be a treasure hunter; the rewards are great.

Let’s keep it fun and interactive!!  After all, if we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane!  Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org

Good Morning from Snickers!

Dear dear friends of our beloved Vincent, I’m Snickers, and I’ll be talking to you today.  Vincent’s had to cancel his daily appearance and take a sick day off.  I hate coming down from the loft unless the office needs defending. But I'll do it for our leader Vincent. I've been peering down and watching him type and I think I can do it. He's depressed about losing ground in the Shelter Challenge.   So you gotta help me round up voters.  http://bit.ly/VoteVincent  Enter Rikkis Refuge in Orange, VA

And now he’s feeling not up to par today.  He’s had a bladder infection.  He was feeling back to normal yesterday.  Maybe he over did it.  This morning he’s feeling like he just needs to sleep in.  So I’m gonna let him.  I’ll take over his job for today.  And don’t you dare laugh at me.

The doc says Vincent is under too much stress because he worries too much about all his friends.  He worries about them being hungry if there’s not enough food on the table.  He’d share his last can of Fancy Feast with any of us - but with 1258 brofurs, sisfurs, brofeathers, sisfeathers and sisscales, that last can won’t go very far.  All this stress of being in charge of raising enough money and enough food to take care of everybody is wearing on his already compromised body.

So I need your help to help our Vincent pal get well.

The biggest thing we can do to relieve stress on the poor old guy, is to see that the pantry is FULL.  I mean FULL.  If there was just enough food for even a couple weeks, it’d be such a relief.  Here at Rikki’s Refuge if we’re all gonna eat right we need 474 cans of cat and dog food EVERY DAY.

There’s a great challenge running for the next few days, thru the 15th.  If you donate the most cans of food, you’ll win a T-shirt.  A Rikki’s T-shirt!!  Now if you live far away you’re not excluded from this challenge.  Vincent had planned on doing the shopping for you, but since he’s not feeling well, I’ll hook up the goat cart and do the shopping.  And I promise not to bite - well I’ll try not to bite - anybody in the store.

I’ll buy the food, 3 cans for every dollar you can donate.  So even if you can’t win the top spot - YOU can help.  Every dollar adds three cans to the pantry.

Help me fill that pantry.  6,636 cans will fill the pantry.  That’s two weeks of nums for us.

Please make a contribution today as a get well quick gift for Vincent.

Here’s all the details of the March Madness Can Challenge!!!

Click here and I’ll do your shopping!

Thank you Patricia and Jim for adding cans yesterday!!!

Martha is still the TOP HERO !!!  She’s donated 750 cans so far !!!!!   Can you beat her ?????

Please help me out, I don't know so much about being a spokes kitty. My job is office defense and I'm real good at hissing and snarling till the enemy goes away.

Round the Refuge

We have a refrigerator in Short Pump, the Richmond area that has been donated.  We need to get it moved this week.  If it’s not out, it’s gonna go to the dump.  The donors do not have a vehicle that can transport it.  Do you?

Mary, who normally works in MY office twice a week and who’ve I’ve decided to even let in and let her pat me some, came out and worked on Monday when the hoomans were so short staffed.  Hoomans who will do that - be on call to come do all the dirty icky cleaning up when need you - are really special people to us.  Thank you Mary.

Rene is selling her wood work and giving a commission to Vincent to help buy food for the critters.  So far she’s been able to meet her goal of $100 a month!!!  Thank you Rene.

Cindy loves the doggies.  And the rest of us too.  I stay a couple days at Cindy’s home.  Once upon a time somebody wanted to adopt me from MY office and Cindy drove me to their house.  I kept biting the lady till she called Cindy to come bring me home.  I love my office, I love my loft and I love my mommey and I don’t ever want to be taked away again.  You may think Rikki’s Refuge is just a shelter but I think it’s my HOME.  Cindy loves all of us, but she’s got a special thing for doggies.  She comes Saturdays to feed and clean up after the doggies.  Poor Mountain has been really sick and Cindy made a great big huge donation to cover Mountains doctor bills.  Thank you Cindy.

I wonder who’s gonna pay for Vincent’s doctor bills?  Vincent always tries to help everybody else and never asks for anything for himself but a few cans of Fancy Feast.  I wonder if anybody will pay his bill?  I hope he doesn’t get repossessed.  I’d miss him.

Those of you who heard Lena went to the hospital, I want you to know she’s ok and at work today.  She got hurted yesterday.  In the wind and the rain and late at night when it was dark she got whacked and fell down and hurt her knee really badly.  She was in so much pain she was crying and it was swelling up real bad.  Lena never complains about pain so you know it was bad.  She went to the hospital and they said it’s not broke like broke bones but it’s twisted and sprained.  They told her to stay off her feet for a few days, so she’s trying to sit more and hobble on one leg or crawl around today.  Send her good energy to heal quick.

I was watching mom and Vincent pay the bills and they’re out of stamps to send them in.  They were digging around and found some stamps somebody had gived them.  Lost of different ones.  39 cents and 42 cents and 23 cents and 5 cents and 3 cents and all kinds of odd things.  They were having to put their fingers and toes together - it takes mom’s fingers and toes and Vin’s toes once and Vin’s fingers twice to figure it all out.  They got it right and it all got in the mail today.

Vincent said to ask you to look around and see if you have odd size stamps laying around and you don’t want to go to the trouble or piecing them together - or you don’t know how to count that high on your toes and fingers - please give them to us to use!!  We’re happy to scrounge and piece together to make ends meet.  Thank you.

Somebody sent us two cards for Red Lobster.  Each one is $10 off if you are using your Discover Card to pay.  You have to use a Discover Card if you’re gonna get the $10 off your meal.  You can only use one card per meal.  I have two of them sitting here.  Vincent hooked up the goat cart last night and made Nanny take him all the way to Fredericksburg cuz Red Lobster serves Fancy Feast on a platter.  After being out in the cold and the rain for hours, the hoomans at Red Lobster turned him away.  Some nonsense about not feeding cats!  Who in their right mind would not feed a cat?

And that’s probably why poor Vin Man is sick today.  Out in that cold and all wet and then not even getting a bite to eat.  So who’ll give me a donation to help pay Vincent’s doctor bill and I’ll mail you these $10 off Red Lobster cards.  Exp date is 4/29/11 so you have lots of time to eat!!

My Favorite Quote, Today
Every day is a new beginning
GO FOR IT
YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD
Together we CAN do ANYTHING!

Vincent could tell you a lot about this.  He had a rough time when he had to remind himself every day that each and every day is a new beginning, that you can make things better, and that you can change the world.

Some times we have bad things happen in our lives.  Not cuz we’re bad kitties or hoomans or doggies or what ever you are.  Just cuz sometimes bad things happen.  They may make you stronger or better or something in the long run, who knows.  But what I do know is that while they are happening you sure don’t think there’s anything good about them.

I’ve had to learn that I can make my own future. I almost died before I learned that.  I was so sad and so upset and so miserable that all I wanted to do was take it out on everybody.  I don’t know why my first hooman mom dumped me.  I never bit her. I loved her. I thought she loved me too. Then one day it’s into a box I go and when I come out it’s at a scary place with terrified doggies and kitties.  They explained to me it’s where you go when no one loves you.

But what was I doing here?  My mom loved me?  Didn’t she?  I was so angry that I started biting and hitting everybody I could.  I wanted them to hurt as bad as I hurt.  I don’t know what I was thinking but it seemed like if they hurt I’d hurt less.  But then I heard that “nasty” kitties get killed.  Soon I was in another box being thrown out again.

Lucky for me that box ended up labeled “Dangerous Feral” and ended up at Rikki’s Refuge.  There’s a lot of bad places it could have ended up, I’m so lucky to have gotten a good one.

But instead of looking out of my nice cage, where I had a soft bed next to a window where I could see what was going on, and getting to know the folks and starting to make the best of my life.  I decided to show them what being hurt was all about.  So I bet and I scratched and I snarled at anybody who’d look at me.  Hooman, dog, cat, I didn’t care, I hated them all.  If the world hated me, well, dawg gone it, I’d give them a good reason to.

The Rikki’s hoomans looked at me and said poor kitty, she’s been hurt so bad, she’s so scared, she doesn’t mean what she’s saying.  And I’d lunge the cage door and scream oh yeeessshiiissssss I do ....   Soon I got to move into the office with Kerry.  Not cus I was nice and deserved it.  Oh looking back I could have made the most of things and been like Vincent and friendly and appreciative of all the help and love.  But no, I had a lot to learn still.

Now every day I wake up and watch the sun rise out my loft window and I’m thankful somebody gave me a chance.  that I didn’t just blow it all by being mean every chance I got.  You know when I’d hurt somebody else, it would feel good, for a few seconds, and then I’d just be more scared that they’d hurt me back.  It’s a vicious circle.  I’m so much happier now that I’m working on being friendlier to people.  I still get scared sometimes and hiss.  And sometimes I forget  and lapse back into my old not so good behavior.  But every day I’m learning that being nice and helpful brings me much better returns than being hateful.

And I really can make my life just the way I want it!!  I can be happy.  I can love again.  And I can feel the love of others.  I just have to not be scared and DO IT !!!

SATURDAY       March 12           ANIMAL ATTENTION DAY - Give some extra hugs to the homeless - take a dog for a walk, scratch a pig's belly, pat a cat.

SUNDAY           March 13           KISS A PIG DAY - All pigs birthday party.  All Rikki's Pigs will celebrate their birthdays today.  Small cupcakes and sweet treats ok but don't overdo them on sweets.  Apples and carrots are much better!.  Learn to truly appreciate these magnificent creatures, give belly rubs, bring food, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, scratch ears, bring more fruits and veggies.  Lots and lots of food.  Today is chosen to honor the pig in celebration of Great American Meat Out on March 20th.  We ask that you go Vegan for today.  Skip the bacon with breakfast, choose spaghetti instead of pork chops, have a lentil casserole instead of pork roast.  Of course Petunia and her friends would prefer that you skip pig, but those of us who care for all the animals, no matter what their shape or size is ask that you skip all animal flesh for today.  You'll find it's not hard at all to save a life and you'll be proud of yourself for doing it.

SUNDAY           March 13           SPRING CLEANUP - You name it, we have it and it needs a spring-cleaning! From hauling trash to the dump, to picking up things that have blown around and just general clean up. We're constantly working at beautifying the refuge. So grab a mop or a rake or a trash bag and let's go!

Round the Refuge
Brrr kind of a chilly day today.  That’s why I gotta wear my hoodie.  I gotz a bladder infection.  Ick.  Yucky medicine and poking at me.  No fairz!!!

What's difference in Moggie & Goggie? Moggie finds BIG tube laxatone on top shelf, Moggie say YUK and swat it to the floor. Goggie finds BIG tube laxatone on floor, Goggie say NUM NUM. It all comes out in the end, Goggie have to stay outside till it does. Moggie snickers at poor Googie. Goggie want back in. Poor Goggie.

Oh Boo I was supposed to go teach human education today at a school with Katarina and Melissa.  But I gotted a bladder infection and mom wouldn’t let me out.  She even made me sit in a cage this morning to “monitor my output.”  Poo on she who opens cans, I no like cage. It makes me feel like an animal!

Leaper got to be the official spokes kitty today.  No fair.  He just got back and told me all about the fun he had.  Him and Anya doggie and Dante rabbit.  And Katarina and Melissa.  All had fun without me!!

Interview with Clover
Vincent: Hi Clover! You're a beautiful gal. Tell me a little about yourself.

Clover: Hi Vincent! Thank you for supporting me.  I know that I look different, and I’m a saucy happy cat. Way back when I was an itty bitty baby, about 4 weeks old, I was attacked by some big creature that wanted to eat me.  Ick, it was awful.  I’ve overcame the loss of part of my nose, lips, and cheek. I am sighted in both eyes, and have a depth perception problem in the right. I’m of Abyssinian decent!  I want people to know DO NOT feel sorry for me!  I’m a very happy healthy girl.

I’m now 12 years old, and rules the pack around this household.  I have 1 sisfur and 3 brofurs. There is an advantage to not having lips, I can open my mouth like a shark! :) So a hiss is a very big hiss.

I love giving sloppy kisses and sleeping in my princess bed. For the first 10 years of my life I lived and worked at a vet clinic as a counselor to other people who had to bring their pets in for serious surgeries. Often they would look at me and how happy I was, and knew that even if their pet required an amputation, they could be just as happy as me!

I moved to my current home 2 years ago.  My doctor closed his clinic and moved away, and now I live with my new family!!

Vincent: You're from Canada? Is it cold and snowy there all the time?

Clover: Yes Canada can be weally cold. But we are lucky cuz we wivs in Vancouver and it is more rainy here in the winter dan snowy. We has had more snow here dis year dan udders, but when it snows I just snuggle up with my sisfur Newmee on da heated beds and we snuggle...da boys all go outside and pway on da catio and swide awound in da snow and den come and walk on meowmy wif der cold feet. Dat makes her yelp! :)

Vincent: Tell me about your favorite shelter(s) and why you think they're special.

Clover: We's weally weally fond of Ayda's Street Cat Rescue in Alexandria Egypt. There are Soooooo many kitties there that are so sick, and they know nothing bouts how nots to have babies. Ayda werks her fingers to da bone and goes to da fish market ebery single morning to feeds dem. Der are hundweds of dem eberywhere. It's not like Canada of the USA, we has lots of stways here, but der are wots of people working to help...der nobodys wants to help....and it is so sad.

If I win I think mom and I’ll support either SAINTS which is a sanctuary for all types of animals that can go to live out their days or VOKRA the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association. They also helps with Ayda's kitties in Egypt too. We know we can't send da money to Egypt.

Vincent: If you could change one thing in the world today, what would it be, Clover?

Clover: If I could changes da world today, I would make sure, dat ebery kitty had a warm house to sweep in. Dat ebery kitty was happy and healthy. And when I says dat, I mean if dey weally don't wants a house or a family dat at weast a hooman has built dem a nice pwace where dey can go to get warm and has food and water.

I wish dat EBERYBODY would spay and neuter.......and fwom a personal point of view that peeps would not judge other kitties, pets or humans from how dey looks on they outside but by the size of der hearts instead.

Working at Rikki’s
Keep your paws crossed - it’s been so hard around here lately that Lena is interviewing for a fill in person to come work on days somebody doesn’t show up for work.  We have somebody coming in tomorrow for their working interview.  I sure hope it all works out.  We have a really long application.  Like 4 million questions all about animals and stuff.  Lots of time people tell us more about themselves writing answers to questions than they do just talking to us.  One of the questions goes like this Q: What do you dislike about animals?   And he filled out  A: I dislike how from time to time animals will get into your food.   Soooooo I want to know, is this person a vegetarian, or doesn't want to share his lunch with me!!!  Mommey says she hates it when animals get into food too - that’s why she’s a vegetarian and doesn’t eat the animals!!

Wanted: Cool junk
that you no longer want or need that can be sold to help feed Vincent and crew at Rikki's Refuge. Items should be gently used and clean. We do NOT want any computers or computer monitors, or old clunky electronics that will probably be unsold. If possible, we want colorful, eclectic and/or useful things that people will want to buy. Kids items always go if you have any. People always like small tables, frames, vases etc. With spring coming, gardening items will be useful too. There will be lots of vendors, so we have to stand out. If you have items that are too big or don't fit into the yardsale / craft fair on March 26th, we still want them for a sale happening in May. You can clean out your closets and garages now and I can store the items in my garage.

I must have the items by Friday, March 25th, or you can bring the items to the yardsale / craft fair the day of the event -- but we must be set up by 7:30 am!

To donate, or for details about the yardsale,
contact: Kathy at 703-350-3957 or via email at kathyd@wri.org.

My Favorite Quote, Today
Don’t be disappointed in what you didn’t do - be a HERO today

Forget about the past parts of your life that you don’t really like.  Don’t dwell on them!  Toss them out!!  You can start your life all over and all new tomorrow.  Be who you’ve always dreamed you’ll be.  Just do it!!  Forget the mistakes, the learning experiences, the boo boos ... keep on exploring for the good things .. find your path and follow it!!  There’s so much out there - so much to do - so much to be !!!  Don’t waste it on things you can’t change!  Jump out of bed tomorrow morning with the plan to make the most of your day - to follow your dream - to make the world yours - to make the difference that matters!!!

If me, a little old three legged kitty, who wets my pants in public, can get out there in front of the world and declare myself a spokes kitty - just think what YOU can do !!!!!

Live your dream !!!!   You’ll never regret getting out there and doing what your heart wants the most !!  Go friends go !!!!  Live your dream life !!!!   YOU deserve it !!!

It takes so little to make such a huge difference.  Together we CAN change the world !!!  One dream at a time !!!

That’s how we say HI in Zulu!

Round the Refuge
Hi there.  I think I got the puter for about 30 seconds before mom gets back.  Gotta be real quick.  Yikes James is still out of work !!!!  His car broke Saturday night and lives real far away and can’t get a ride to work.  Hurry up and fix that car!!!  And Wayne for the hooman tummy bug and he’s gacking hairballs so he couldn’t come to work.

Mommey says when we’re that short handed something else always happens.  Well I’ll tell you what happened.

I got hoomaniliated! Can one not potty privately? So I kept having to go. Just a little here and a little there. And then mom does the blotter test and it was pink. So that means utter and total humiliations, poking and prodding and OUCH yes it hurts when you squeeze my tummy! Does it hurt when I stick a claw in YOUR eye? AND I got a shot and stuff in mouth. How can I live this down?

Silly chickens don’t close up their door at night.  They leave it wide open for foexy to come in.  Don’t they get it?  Foxey would eat them up if he came a visiting at night.  So when it geted dark tonight I put the chickens to bed.  I pulled up the draw bridge over the moat and latched up the gate real tight at Chicken City.  I want my chicken friends to be safe.

And then you know what?  Ahhhhh another sign of spring - guess what I saw crawling on my paw when I get back in from closing up Chicken City? First tic of the year, yucko, grody, come on chickens it's your job to eat them all up! Grrrr you know how you see one of them and you get the itches all over????   Scratch, scratch, scratch.  Hey can you get my ear on the right side there???  Yeahhhh right there,,,,  yeahhhh.  Thanks, about the only time I miss that hind right one!!!

We’ve got several things to vote for now.

Really really really important to vote and to get all your friends voting in the shelter challenge.  We’re like two steps to being totally overtaken.  Please vote and vote quick and beg your friends to vote - we surged ahead before and we can do it again.  http://bit.ly/VoteVincent Enter Rikkis Refuge VA
