Tortoise gets wheel to replace amputated leg

It’s not every tortoise that can do a wheelie. Gamera, a 12-year-old tortoise, can. The African spur-thighed tortoise recently had to have its left front leg amputated as a result of an injury, but doctors at Washington State University veterinary hospital came up with an ingenious solution to his mobility problems. They attached a swiveling wheel to his shell, and the 23-pound reptile is getting around just fine, thank you.

Charlie Powell, spokesman for the hospital, which is located in Pullman, Washington, told the Associated Press, "I don't know whether he'd pass the hare, but he moves around very well."

The wheel added three pounds to Gamera’s weight, but that has hardly slowed him down—especially when he is moving toward food.
