Tails of Trivia
Dogs are thought to have descended from wolves in southeast Asia at least 14,000 years ago.

Some of the oldest breeds of dogs are the Afghan Hound, the Chow Chow, the Lhasa Apso, the Pekingese, the Shar Pei, the Shih Tzu, the Tibetan Terrier, the Saluki, the Basenji, the Akita Inu, the Shiba Inu, the Samoyed, the Siberian Husky and the Alaskan Malamute.

Most dogs have a double coat of hair -- an undercoat that provides insulation and an outer coat of guard hair.
11.  According to the AKC the most popular names for dogs are Lady and Bear.

The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest breed of dog.  At a minimum, males should be 31 inches tall at the shoulder and 120 pounds.  Females should be 28 inches tall at the shoulder and 90 pounds.

The heaviest dog is usually considered to be the Mastiff or the Saint Bernard.  A healthy Mastiff or Saint Bernard -- not an overweight dog -- will typically weigh 180-200 pounds.

The smallest breed of dog is the tiny Chihuahua.  According to the Chihuahua breed standard they should not weigh more than six pounds and they stand six to nine inches tall at the shoulder.

The world’s fastest dog is probably the Greyhound.  They can reach speeds of 45 miles per hour.  However, Whippet fans claim that their dogs are faster over short distances, able to zig and zag better.  Saluki aficionados claim that their dogs are better open-field hunters.  All three breeds are extremely fast.

The world’s hairiest dog may be the Old English Sheepdog or the Komondor. These breeds have long hair from stem to stern.

The world’s least hairy dogs may be the Mexican Hairless or Xolo and the American Hairless Terrier.

A dog’s sense of smell is a marvel.  He has 125 to 220 million smell-sensitive receptors.  (A Bloodhound has 300 million receptors.)  Dogs can discriminate odors at concentrations about 100 million times lower than a human can.

Basset Hounds have the longest ears of any breed.

Foo dogs are ancient, sacred dogs of Asia who guard Buddhist temples.  They look like lion dogs.

The common dog name “Fido” comes from the Latin word for “faithful” or “fidelity.”

So is this enough reason to vote for DOGS?  This combined that your vote will count DOUBLE?  Click here if it is and cast your vote for dogs:
And if it’s not enough reason, I’ll give you one more, WE dogs are holding YOUR little buddy Vincent captive, vote for his release NOW, before we slobber all over him!

On this Day
If I still haven’t convinced you to vote for us dogs ....

Did you know that April is Appreciate Diversity Month - let’s have some diversity around this refuge.  All I ever hear is CATS CATS CATS - now it’s time for dogs.  Vincent has won every, each and every Cats vs Dogs contest ever and forever.  And he just won the Bissell photo contest and the little bugger is really full of himself bragging about his $5,000 winnings for that!  Let’s put Vincent in his place once and for all.  Vote DUKE for your next ruler.  And double your vote - double your dollar!! Click on your favorite candidate.  Only Duke’s votes are Doubled!!!

Two more reasons to vote DOGS!!!!

Duke Kisses Robin, a new Rikki’s Volunteer
Unlike Vincent the cat, who expects his fans to adoringly show up and kiss him, Duke reaches out to everyone and kisses them!

Boomer, Duke’s seeing eye dog
The loyalty we dogs have for each other and for you is enough to make you want to vote right now.  Isn’t it?  Double your vote for Duke the next Ruler of Rikki’s Refuge:

Good Times in the News
Oops! Lady Liberty stamp is of Vegas replica
A stamp that was supposed to show the Statue of Liberty actually features a replica outside a Las Vegas casino, The New York Times reported. The United States Postal Service admitted the mistake but said it planned to stick with its Lady Liberty "Forever" stamp.

"We still love the stamp design and would have selected this photograph anyway," Roy Betts, a post office spokesman, told the Times. However, he added the Post Office regretted the error and was "re-examining our processes to prevent this situation from happening in the future."

The Times said the image was taken from a photography service, but a "super-fan" of the statue spotted subtle differences and contacted Linn's Stamp News, which first ran the story.

The differences include the hair, more sharply defined eyes and a small patch.

Some people were delighted.

"Everyone thought the post office was honoring just one great American institution when in reality they were honoring two — the Statue of Liberty and Las Vegas," said Gordon Absher, spokesman for MGM Resorts International, which owns the New York-New York casino in Vegas. The fake statue stands in a fake New York Harbor.

Others were less than pleased.

"It simply means the post office is doing a stupid thing," Edward Koch, former mayor of the real New York, told the Times.

Can A Hippo Save This Texas School?
A small town hopes a strange animal can save its financially strapped school district. The AP's Rich Matthews reports from Hutto, Texas.

Well, you don’t see them using a cat do you?  I don’t know if a hippo will spark interest.  Maybe they should have used a faithful dog.  And your vote cast for doggies will not only DOUBLE today, it will help put us dogs up front, where we belong - leading the pack at Rikki’s Refuge.  It’s so easy, just click to cast your DOUBLE vote!
