Round the Refuge
Ok so put this date on your calendar!!  Tuesday the 22nd.  Mikes reserved a truck and he’ll be going over the river and thru the woods to Purina’s factory.  And coming back with tons and tons of doggie and kitty nums.  Really truly TONS and that’s why I NEED YOUR HELP that afternoon - mid afternoon - to help unload.  We gots to be quick like bunnies and get that truck unloaded so Mike can get it back to the rental place before they close!!!  Please plan to come help that day.

Sunday the 20th it’s Raising Roofs at Rabbit Rotunda II.  Starting at 8 am and going all day !!!  BE THERE.

Saturday, tomorrow, it’s gonna be the best Full Moon Walk for the next 18 years.  Even NASA says so.

AND Saturday is Volunteer Training - so you can learn how to help the animals while you’re waiting to head to the woods under to glow of the full moon!

Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years.

"The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look."

Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee): diagram. Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit.

OK so I’m a cat.  Cats have sense.  Cats have a lot of sense.  Maybe I should be a rocket scientist.  I don’t think the moon is changing in size from day to day do you?  Like a balloon?  Come on.  I’ve seen cheese and it’s .. well... the same size unless you nibble at it ... or it dries up or something.  So I think NASA means the APPARENT size of the moon, don’t you?

And while were on the subject of cats ... you really should take heed.  There’s a real moral to this story.

Pets and humans on Japan’s quirky ‘cat island’ safe
By Liz Goodwin
A small island that counts just 100 people as inhabitants, but is home to many more stray cats has reportedly survived the destruction from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last Friday, according to a group that is trying to save animals after the disaster.

"Just to give everyone an update on Tashirojima, the cat island. The people and cats are safe but short of food," the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support group posted in a Facebook message on Monday. "A volunteer looked into transporting food by boat, but there is too much debris in the water. A helicopter is the only way. The army will probably get a helicopter ready soon so we are looking into the possibility of asking them to take cat food too."

The fishing town's residents built a shrine to the numerous cats in their midst. Tashirojima--known familiarly as "Cat Island"--has become a tourist attraction for animal lovers. "The cats here have always been something like a lucky charm for us who bring good catch. We enshrine them because they are important to us," local fisherman Tsuneo Endo said in a 2009 CCTV article. Feeding the strays is thought to bring good fortune.

This Thai News report (untranslated, unfortunately) shows video footage of the cats overruning the island:

I do take a little offense at “cats overruning the island”.  You don’t hear my kind talking about the hoomans “overrunning” the highways and the malls and ....well ....  the whole planet!!!  We take up a lot less space then the hoomans and we use a lot less resources.  So who, just who’s doing the overrunning around here?
