A Labor of Love...

So, did you know it's Labor Day??  I hear hoomans like to pic-a-nic on Labor Day??  I heard mom inviting hoomans over for a pic-a-nic... I don't think she knows us aminals want a pic-a-nic too...Wouldn't that be FUN!!  If we could all pic-a-nic and let the hoomans do the labor part on Labor Day!  I think that's the way it should be....Hoomans labor....aminals pic-a-nic....Oh no!  There's not nuf in the pantry for us to all pic-a-nic.....You can help me fill my basket, PLEAZ???
Love, Opie
(If you click on any pictures on this blog, it will take you to our donation page!!)

IT'S LABOR DAY.....REMEMBER OUR UNSUNG HEROES...

In addition to lots of pic-a-nics, Labor Day means a nice long relaxing weekend for lots of the nine to fivers.  But for animal caretakers, like our amazing staff at Rikki's Refuge, the work never ends!  Our staff are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet!

On any given day, they show up on time - rain or shine, hot or cold, holiday or no holiday - and take care of me and my 1200+ friends of many species on the refuge!  That's a lot of labor, but I think for all of them it is also a LABOR OF LOVE!  That says a lot because it is HARD work - caring and cleaning for us, scooping hundreds of pounds of poo, lots of heavy lifting, running to catch sheep, giving us our meds when needed - and soooo much more! Every day is stuffed to the brim with work to be done.

And despite all that hard LABOR, I think we ALL love them most because they are compassionate and loving and they care for us unconditionally!!

So on this Labor Day, I say THANKS to my hoomans who work so hard at Rikki's Refuge every single day and night.  I love you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi!  O'doul here.....So, Opie is throwing a Labor day Pic-a-nic for all of us at Rikki's Refuge.....but I'm kind of worried....you should have seen that grin on his face when he came by and invited us Guinea Pigs....I mean, Opie is kind of nice, but you know what I mean about CATS?  They're kind of scary.  Some of them cats walk by Cavy Castle and say bad things like "rodent rodent rodent"....and so we Guinea Pigs, well we held a meeting and we decided maybe we're not wanting to go to Opie's pic-a-nic.....but we'd sure love to have our OWN!  Would you buy us some ORANGES for the Exclusive Labor Day Guinea Pigs Only Pic-a-nic???  Thank you!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

HOW ABOUT SOME HOOMAN NUMS??

Although it would be best with some Fancy Feast, this recipe might be nummy for your own pic-a-nic!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm so hoping I'll be able to buy nums for everybody here at Rikki's Refuge  ....  I wanna be Griller Chef Opie for the Aminals Labor Day Pic-a-nic ... you will help me pleaz????
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In honor of it being Labor Day, I'm posting a job listing here.....we are looking for another unsung hero to be hooman laborers taking care of us aminals.....the bonus is we will all love you!!  You interested???

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Uh Oh...... I convinced the goats to pull the goat cart to the grocery store so I could stock up on nums for everybody for our Labor Day Pic-a-nic .... well everybody but dem hoomans ... No hoomans allowed at da Aminal Labor Day Pic-a-nic ... no siree...just aminals....So this is where I need your help...I'm at the grocery store now....and they got all the nums...but they say I have to have da green stuff if I'm takin' it home.... I tried giving the grouchy lady at the check-out some lettuce to buy everything I had in my basket....and you know what she did???  She yelled "get this filthy animal out of my grocery store!  Somebody call Animal Control"....so here I am sitting outside the doors....in an empty basket....and the manager says I can't come back in and fill my basket again 'til I can prove I gotz nuf green stuff to prove I can buy it all.  Will you help me Pleaz???
Love you bunches,
Opie
Good Morning Good News !!!! August 26, 2014
Dawg Day?  Seriously, mom?  I’m supposed to ask for dog food?
This is a joke, right?  I mean .....  let them write the ne.....
OK OK ... I get it ...  ask for dawg food on Dawg Day
or I don’t get my Fancy Feast ?
Right !  This is bribery, you know.
Hi, everybody !!  Opie here.  Well today is Dawggie Day ....  And I’d be so happy if you’d like to feed a Dawggie today ...  I’d be happier if you’d like to adopt one ....
Click on any Dawggie in this photo, and give him or her $1 or more and I’ll make sure they get something nummy today !!!
NOT my Fancy Feast ....  but some kind of Fancy Dawg Dinner, ok?
Thank you, Opie.
Oh Oh .... on Morning Medical Rounds, poor Brownie was walking funny and looking uncomfortable.  She sure didn’t seem too sick as she lead the capture chase back and forth, up and down, giving the hoomans their exercise for the day.
Once in our hospital, we learned her udder was swollen, and to our untrained eyes, it looked like a case of mastitis.  Time to call the doc.
Poor Brownie got loaded up, and headed out in the Toyota to the goat doc, over the mountains and thru the woods.  Many a trip has the trusty Toyota made with many different species riding along.
Sure was a beautiful day for a trip over the mountains.
Home again Home again ....  It's GOOD news !!!!   Brownie does NOT have mastitis !!!
She does have a hormonal imbalance that is making her udder swollen and leaking a brownish fluid.  It can be just one of those things that happens sometimes, or she could have eaten too much clover that has a lot of estrogen in it (mom says, anybody ever tell you to eat clover?  Doc told me to eat soy for menopause, but never mentioned clover.)
Doc gave Brownie a hormone injection and said she should be ok in a few days.  If not call.  Sometimes they need several shots in a row.  Sometimes it could take more to "reset" her system.  Brownie isn't going to be happy, cuz till it clears up she's got to get her temp taken every day.  If it gets high she's gotta go see doc again.  Sometimes this can cause mastitis.  But most likely she'll be all fine now.
So glad to be home  .... Jessie gets nums for Brownie
At home with Betty the cat and Bee-Bee the Donkey.
The tank of gas to go to the vet cost $38.27 and the doc's bill is $66.50 ....   poor Brownie is asking for help with the $104.77 she now owes ....   And says she'd be happy if somebody would toss in a few extra bucks - the green kind - so she can have some alfalfa cubes as a treat !!!
If you're willing to keep Brownie off the street and stop her from going door to door to ask for a hand out ....  Please give her a buck or two towards her bill !!!   Thank you so much, ... I gotz a big nuf job feeding cats ...  I can no gotz da green stuff nuf to help Brownie right now.    You can help her out right here: www.RikkisRefuge.org/FeedMe
Good Morning Good News !!!! August 20, 2014
It’s a foggy fall morning.  The fog is swirling all around.  Lifting off the ground.  Slowly climbing the trees.   The kind of fog where there be dragons.  Swirls of blue.  Swirls of pink.  Swirls of purple.  It rises up to meet the sunrise.  The kind of fog where heaven meets earth.  There is no divide.  A time when the dragons, the fairies, the mystical beings can mingle with earth creatures.
As the fog rises ..  there ... there ... there comes one ....  legs firmly planted on earth ... walking out of the fog ... towards me ...
The nights have gotten cool ... the leaves are changing ....  the world is turning round towards autumn.
It’s been a lovely peaceful summer.  Wonderful weather.  Wonderful animals.  Wonderful happenings.
Life at the refuge has rolled along in peace and quiet.  No great and exciting happenings, no great and exciting disasters.
No new species, no new emergencies.
When the routine, day in and day out, runs smoothly, a moo here, a bark there, a pat here, a hug there ......  you know this is the way it should be!!
The new species, the disasters, the changes .... it’s exciting to read about ... it urges donors to help out.
But the routine, the peace, the love .... that’s what we strive for every day ....  and when we accomplish that  ....  it a good solid feeling of peace and happiness for all.   For the animals, for the caretakers, for volunteers, for donors.
Sometimes donors forget us when life is peaceful and calm.  When there is no urgent and expensive surgery, no materials to buy for a broken fence, no urgent care for a new comer.  Peaceful day to day life, everyone is fed, the houses are cleaned, the routine medications are given, the flea and tick and worm meds go down, are dropped on, are sprayed on, everyone lies down in a comfy bed for the night ....  all is calm. all is right.
The cost of giving one of our almost 1300 animals a clam, peaceful, happy home is about $1 a day.  A cow may cost a little more than a guinea pig, a dog more than a cat ....  but when we mix it all up, like the big happy family we are, it rounds out to $1 a day for basic food, housing, medication and love.
It’s only when you add everybody up all together that the number gets big ....  awfully big.
We need your help for survival each and every day.  In the nice easy peaceful times and when disaster or emergency strikes.
You have so much on your mind, summer adventures of your own, kids out of school, travels, relocating, new jobs, your family, your own furry friends, volunteering, projects.  Just like us, with longer daylight hours, you work to accomplish so much more, lawn care, landscaping, painting, repairs.
Knowing we have the money to care for the animals this summer has been the one thing that has filled us with worry, caused restless dreams, and some days left us downright scared.  It’s a usual summer thing.  The expenses are always there ....  donations drop off as folks have more to do in the summer.
We compensate the lean summer months by letting accounts run up ....  yet we have those nasty credit limits too, just like you !!!!   And now we must start catching up before winter brings bigger food and housing costs !!
Will YOU help us?  Pick one critter and help them with only $1 a day.  Skip the fancy coffee and help several animals.  Eating out tonight?  Plan to skip dessert and do us and YOU a favor !!!   www.RikkisRefuge.org/FeedMe
There’s an easy way to help out every month.  So easy not to forget the animals in your busy lives.  So easy, you’ll almost forget it’s even there.  Recurring donations.  You can sign up to make a donation once a month.  And that’s such a huge help.  To know you care and to know you’ll be there.
It breaks the peace and the calm and the happy, gentle routine of caring for the animals when I have to worry so about where the next meal is coming from, how I can pay for a vet visit, if I can afford subq fluids so the kidney patients feel like eating, asthma medicine so many will breathe easier, arthritis relief medication for the stiff old knees, the farrier to trim the old donkey’s fast growing hooves.
Think about a recurring donation .... right here www.RikkisRefuge.org/FeedMe
To the left, you see One Time Donation where you can help with a special item, or make a donation today.
Next is Recurring Donation where you easily enter how many animal days you’d like to help.  Enter 1 to care for one animal for one day a month.  Enter 10 to care for ten animals for one day a month.  Enter 30 if you’d like to care for one animal everyday, every month !!   You can enter any number from 1 thru 10,000 .....  10,000 cares for everybody for a little over a week ...  even at $1 a day, 1300 animals use it up quick !!
The next slot let’s you specify how long you’d like to make the monthly donation.  It’s best for the animals if you leave that blank!  That means forever (or until you tell it to stop) !!   Or you can enter 12 for a year, 24 for two years and so on.
Hit subscribe ...  and you’re almost done ....  I think it’ll ask you to prove you’re a hooman with a credit card or bank account or somethin like that !!!
Thank you !!!!!
Thank you for saving MY life today !!!
Good Evening Good News !!!! July 9, 2014
See Astro’s left ear?  That’s called an Ear Tip.  That signifies that Astro if a speutered feral cat.  It’s very important to use this universal symbol of a Cared for Community Cat so the caregiver knows when a new un-speutered cat shows up.  Everybody in a Cared for Community Cat Colony must be speutered.  When a cat with an ear tip is turned into a good shelter or pound, they try to find the caretaker for local colonies so they can get the kitty home to his Community Colony where he belongs.
But sometimes the kitty isn’t so lucky.  Sometimes they end up in a not very caring shelter or pound, or their caretaker can’t be found, or they come from a location that is being closed.  Sometimes new owners of properties aren’t very nice and they won’t allow the Community Cats to continue to live there.  Sometimes construction or destruction gets in the way.
Then the lucky Community Cats without a Community join us at Rikki’s Refuge.  We’re happy to allow feral kitties to live with us.  Just cuz you don’t much like or care for hoomans is no reason to die.  Feral kitties are purrfectly good kitties with a wonderful life to live.
At Rikki’s they live in social family groups in their Cat Houses where they have a kitty door to a large expanse of protected play yard.  They are fed, given warm beds and the medical care they need.  They are loved, even if they don’t want to love the hoomans back!
And sometimes one gets sick.  Astro had an illness that he just couldn’t shake this winter.  Soon as he was off meds, he’d be sick again.  At first this was really difficult for him cuz he had to be handled by hoomans several times a day.  Neither of them liked that.  In this case, Astro’s treatment really did hurt our hoomans a lot more than it hurt him !!!
But gradually Astro got used to letting people handle him and he got all well too.  And now he’s an almost friendly indoor outdoor kitty at Rikki’s Refuge !!!!
Thank you for saving Astro and letting him and his friends live out their lives in peace and happiness !!!    By clicking here, you can help Astro and his friends www.RikkisRefuge.org/FeedMe
Thank you !!!
Today’s Facebook Trivia Question
How many 5.5 oz cans of cat food do we use every year? Who can get the closest ?
What you guessed!
Donna Savory 9,125
Christopher Robbins 10,000?
Ron Herfurth 50,000 ?
Deb Forrest 109,500? 55,000???
Rene Luther 219,000 for 600 cats then. I thought there were more cats than that!
Sherry Chumley Brockner 219000 if you have 600 cats
Martha Girdany 246,000??
Heather Gonzales 250,000 cans
Lia Federico 268,000
Merrie David 365,000
Don Appleby 428,000
Arlene Cummings-Markowski 1 million
Kathy Doucette One 5.5 ounce can per cat per day X 365 days -- what do I win?
Nora Eldridge I'd say, using a mathematical formula, well - A LOT!
Carol Blasin Tons
The Answer: Rikki's Refuge uses 78,708 cans (5.5 oz) of cat food a year or 3,279 cases (24/case), that's 9 cases of canned cat food we need every day !!!   Ron and Deb you’ll have to share the Winners Circle today !!!!   Since I can’t split a cat in half ....  I’ll send a whole one to each of you !!!!
Re-Tail needs volunteers
We REALLY need more volunteers at Re-Tail!  The pictures below are of our stockroom. The first picture is of donations that came in TODAY -- yes, between noon and 2:00, this much came in! The 2nd picture is the pile of clothes that need to be sorted. The 3rd and 4th are simply the shelves and boxes FULL of items to be priced and stocked on the sales floor.
Can YOU help for a few hours here and there? Our biggest need is on the weekends, especially between the hours of store opening (10:00 on Saturday, and noon on Sunday) until about 3:00. We quit accepting donations at 2:00, so, in theory, that's adding another hour to get things sorted and on to their respective shelves.
If you can help, stop in for an application (it will tell you the type of help that we need, and you can circle the areas that you are willing to help in) and we can schedule an orientation!
Teenagers are welcome IF AND ONLY IF they can work independently. There will be no one to help them, or keep an eye on them, and, as you can see, we need people who will roll up their sleeves and WORK. Thanks!!
This Sunday at 7 pm..... Come and join us ....
.....   vegan or vegetarian please !!!! We'll be reading from The Four Agreements --- some very valuable lessons we cats are born knowing and you hoomans would do good to learn from !!!!
1) Be impeccable with your word -- Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of Truth and Love.
2) Don't take anything personally -- Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality. When you are immune to the opinions and reactions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.
3) Don't make assumptions -- Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama.
4) Always do your best -- Your best is going to change from moment to moment, it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.
Later we'll get to the fifth lesson  (a sequel book)
5) Be skeptical, but learn to listen -- Don't believe yourself or anybody else. Use the power of doubt to question everything you hear. Is it really the truth? Listen to the intent behind words and you will understand the real message.
Join us and learn to embrace these lessons and become more cat like and less hooman like !!!! Love, Vincent I shall be there in spirit with you
