Refuge News
Bill and Bill spent yesterday working on the Quarantine Building.   They weren’t able to get in to work till late cuz of the ice yesterday morning.  But they still got lots and lots of work done.  Soon Soon Soon

All the ice has melted and it’s well above freezing now, kind of drizzly.

Sick hoomans today so we’re really short staffed.  If you’re a trained volunteer and can do dishes, laundry, or help with the regular cleaning please come on out.  Lena and Sean are both out sick with tummy bugs.  Billy was scheduled to be off today cuz his dad’s been sick and he’s taking him to the doc.  If you can’t make today, how about tomorrow?  We’ll be behind with the last pile of evening dishes to wash and left over laundry.

Mom and me went to Culpeper Pharmacy yesterday.  We needed insulin for Buster and Big Red. $48.20.  While we were gone the propane man came and left us a bill for $766.14.  YIKES, it’s costing a fortune to keep us safe and warm in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center and hospital. It's been so cold this winter, with so many days not even above freezing, and no sunny days to help warm things up, so the furnace is running day and night nonstop.  We're starting to get behind on the bills again, we haven't even paid the last propane bill yet, if you could possibly spare a buck or two, I'd really appreciate the help.  http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/donate.php

I'm trying to find a good recipe for Fancy Feast Muffins, so I can have a bake sale and raise some money.  What do you think? $10 for Fancy Feast Muffin, $25 if I promise not to send you one!

Culpeper Pharmacy
(540) 825-7576 • 261 Southgate Shopping Center, Culpeper, VA

Culpeper Pharmacy has been providing for our furry families’ prescription and home care needs since 2003 (and before that when they had a pharmacy in Orange). Located in the Southgate Shopping Center, next to the Culpeper Regional Library, Culpeper Pharmacy has been proud to help Rikki's Refuge and all their other customers with a full range of home health care needs. From prescriptions and diabetic supplies to Power Wheelchairs, Lift Chairs and more. How can they help you today?

Bill Morris and Gordon Atkins have been taking special care of the critters in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center for almost as long as Rikki's Refuge has been here.  Sometimes it's filling a normal prescription.  Sometimes it requires research to find the right variation of the medication our veterinarians want for us.  Sometimes it's adjusting the dosage for us little guys.  Sometimes it's answering our questions.  Always it's researching to find us the best possible deal and placing special orders for us.

Bill and Gordon and Culpeper Pharmacy are one big reason we're able to take care of so many on such a short little shoestring.

And, this Christmas, they stretch their shoestring even further.  They donated just about a whole month's worth of pharmacy supplies to Rikki's Refuge, all the routine things used by the patients of the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center.  That amounted to a whole lot of money, hundreds of dollars, and a great big huge help to us at Rikki's Refuge.

Thank you Bill and Gordon for taking care of me and all my special needs and for running such a wonderful business and being so kind and compassionate to all your customers.  If everybody knew you, there wouldn't be any other pharmacies for 100 miles around!

Culpeper Pharmacy is good people running a good business.  Tell ‘em Vincent sent you!

Fun and Inspiring
A porcupine has approximately 30,000 quills.  The quills are specialized hairs and are inter-dispersed with its normal hair. They have a light, spongy center and are tipped with microscopic barbs.  It is hypothesized that the quills are lightly-colored in contrast to the animal's otherwise black fur in order to appear striking and serve as a visual warning to potential predators.  Baby porcupines are born with soft spines, which harden within an hour. I'm sure mother porcupines appreciate this. Porcupines do not shoot their quills. They do not have this capability. Physical contact with a porcupine is needed in order to be stuck with its quills.

Snowball is a lovely mature lady.  She had skin cancer on her ears which required surgery.  That's why they are short and round.  Skin cancer on the ears of white cats is very common.  On kitties who have one white ear and one black ear, like Gideon, you will often see cancer on the white ear but not on the black ear.

Snowball has been with us for about a year and a half, she hails from George.  She prefers to spend most of her time inside now and is a resident of the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center where she has lots of friends.

Meet Laz... the oldest donkey
at the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon
We've been drawn to some recent press coverage about a donkey called Eeyore from Wilmslow who is thought to be the world's oldest donkey, at the grand age of 54!

Not far behind Eeyore is our oldest resident here at the Sanctuary, Laz. We believe he is now 51 years of age!

He came into our care in 2000 and was the 8,209th donkey to pass through our doors. Now living at Woods Farm, he enjoys a peaceful life surrounded by his friends and is given the expert care he deserves.

This very short video was taken last year when he'd just turned 50 and will introduce you to the wonderful Laz and his carer Nikki Hart, who describes his cheeky nature!

Majority of Americans Believe Pets Have Psychic Powers
by Josh Loposer
Do you feel like your pet always seems to know what's about to happen? You're not alone. According to a new poll conducted by the Associated Press and Petside.com, two-thirds of American pet owners believe their animal companions have a sixth sense that alerts them to future events or gives them insight into their owners.

That's not to say that owners think their pets are all-knowing. Poll participants believed that intuitive powers are limited to specific areas, and the frequency of reported powers varied between species. For example, of the 1,000 pet owners surveyed, 72 percent of dog owners said that their dogs had alerted them to bad weather, while only 66 percent of cat owners said they've received similar forecasts. Forty-seven percent of dog owners and 41 percent of cat owners said they've received a warning about bad news from their pets.

From Earthquakes to Anxiety
Nevada farmer Jim Fulstone says that his Pomeranian, Austin, can detect earthquakes and thunderstorms. "He'll run around in circles and look at you. If you sit down, he'll sit down with you. If you are outside, he will come up to you, run around, look off, sniff your leg, just kind of be there. He's a lot more active," Fulstone tells the AP. "For the quakes, he was very alert and started barking and doing his run-around routine." Fulstone says that Austin gives about a 15-minute warning before earthquakes and 45-minute warning before thunderstorms.

Other owners feel that their pets' sixth sense manifests in a more personal way -- their animals sense when they are sick or upset and actively try to comfort them. Anne Radley of Kansas is one such owner. Radley suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks. She tells the AP that when her anxiety is high, her seven pets sense it and all try to cuddle at once. "I have pets all over me. ... It gets a little crowded, but they all do it."

Possible Explanation
Scores of pet owners report similar warnings about weather events, earthquakes, bad news and health issues. But psychic powers may not be the cause; pet owners may simply be interpreting normal animal behaviors as extrasensory warnings. Scientists believe that animals may have the ability to sense changes in barometric pressure, thus alerting them to weather events. Likewise, dogs have clearly shown the ability to detect hormonal changes that signify an upcoming seizure or other kinds of health changes.

Labrador Retriever Comforts Kids in Court
by Jennipher Walters
Amos, a kind and lovable chocolate Lab in Michigan sometimes puts in long days at the courthouse. He's not sniffing for bombs or patrolling the grounds, but he is protecting and serving. Amos works as a canine guardian and comforter of sorts and helps reduce anxiety for children who have to appear in court.

Amos has been trained to sit patiently near children for hours as they either wait to take the stand or testify in court, reports The Detroit News. Recently he accompanied two young victims who each testified for more than two hours against a defendant in a sexual misconduct trial.

The dog is part of the Canine Advocacy Program (CAP), which was launched by Dan Cojanu, who had previously worked as a supervisor of the Victim Services Unit for the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in Michigan, reports the Detroit News.

The CAP is the first of its kind in Michigan and its services are offered at no cost to law enforcement or the courts. The program is funded by donations. Similar programs exist in California, Washington and Florida.

Amos originally came to the attention of Cojanu when it became evident that he wasn't the best fit for Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, Mich. (Amos pulled too much on the leash.) Cojanu, however, found Amos to be perfect for the Canine Advocacy Program -- friendly with a calm disposition for children and the courtroom.

Despite the success so far, this program is very much in its initial stages and not everyone is as positive about the role of animals in the courtroom. One prosecutor cited concerns about jurors with allergies or a fear of dogs that could risk a decision reversal or children having to testify again.

But Conjanu (pictured left) is convinced. He tells The Detroit News, "Kids seem to feel better when Amos is around. ... The kids usually attach themselves to Amos, and we see the anxiety just plummet. They focus on this big, brown 'huggy' dog, and you can just watch the anxiety disappear."

Cat summoned for jury service
By Gaby Leslie Yahoo! News
A tabby cat has been selected for jury duty in the US after his owners registered him on a state census form.
The bizarre letter was sent to the cat, which was listed in the pets section of the census, by a court in Boston, Massachusetts calling on him for duty.

Cat owners Anna and Guy Esposito wrote to the court asking the family pet, named Sal, to be excused from service because he doesn't speak or understand English.

Mrs Esposito reportedly included a letter from her vet confirming that the cat was a 'domestic short-haired neutered feline' and not human.

However, the request for the cat's exemption was refused by a jury commissioner and Mrs Esposito was told that Sal 'must attend' Suffolk Superior Crown Court.

She said: "When they ask him guilty or not guilty, what's he supposed to say - meow?"

"Sal is a member of the family so I listed him on the last census form under pets but there has clearly been a mix-up."

The Daily Mail reported that Sal could have accidentally ended up on the juror list when paperwork was misread at the last census.

According to the Massachusetts judicial branch website, US citizens who 'do not speak and understand English sufficiently well may be disqualified.'

If Sal's application for disqualification is denied, the cat is expected in court on 23 March.

Refuge News
We’re under a light coat of ice this morning. When it melts off a bit more we’ll go pull Valerie’s car away from the tree at the far end of the drive way!  She thinks the only damage is to the license plate.  Paws crossed!

Yesterday, Cindy and Walker came out to volunteer all day and feed and clean everybody at Doggy Downs.

Bill and Bill worked all day on the Quarantine Building, getting us a step closer to being able to use it.

Christiann donated a dryer, and Dennis and Crystal picked it up and delivered it to Rikki's Refuge.

Oh! This is really funny! Wayne just cleaned and refilled the water bowl in the office. We use one of those self waters, because some of the kitties like to swat the water with their paws and this way they usually don't spill it all out and there's plenty left for everybody.  When it's first put into place, it sort of bubbles and gurgles.  Maybe beauty has never seen this before, but she is attacking the big water bottle and smacking it every time gurgles!

Update on Pegasus
Beth writes in: I was very touched reading about Pegasus from this weekend's VFA spay/neuter clinic.  I have volunteered at the clinic many times.  I was out of town this weekend, so I did not work this clinic. I did not meet Pegasus.  After reading his story, I donated $100 to Rikki's to help with his recovery.  I really hope the poor guy makes it.  It sounds like he's been through a lot in his short life and deserves a chance.  I really wanted to thank you for giving guys like Pegasus a chance.  While I have to tell myself all the time that I can't save them all, it's nice to know there are places like Rikki's that can help save more of them. I'll look forward to reading about his recovery.  Even if he doesn't make it, at least his last days were filled with compassion and a full belly.

Thanks for all you do--
Beth and Louie and Peanut

Tina from Revival Animal Health is sending Pegasus some high calorie nutritional supplements to help with his weight gain.

Beth, Tina, and everybody - we have GOOD NEWS!

Pegasus is doing great so far.  His cold seemed just a minor thing, and though he was and still is being treated with antibiotics, he seems over it.  He's got horrible poos.  It's very soft now instead of liquid.  Probably a load of every worm on the planet.  We'll address that when he's just a bit stronger.  He's eating everything in sight.  Hissing at us but I think will be friendly.  If not, we'll have to decide if he goes back to his colony or stays here in one of our cat houses.  A lot will depend on how rapidly he gains his weight back.  He can't be off the streets very long and keep his winter coat.  He'll start to lose it after two weeks and would need climate control for the rest of winter.

Mom says: Pegasus reminds me of a guy, Timmy, I once had who'd be 30 this May.  Some of them just stick in your heart forever.  Timmy was one of the very gentle sweet kind never stop purring guys.  I had his brother Danny for only 16 years, he'd been plagued with an unknown health problem from the time he was a year old.  He's the one who I had to learn all about alternative medicine so he could have a good life.  Their sister Rebecca was china doll beautiful, and the worst sprayer you ever met.  I loved her dearly!  She lived to be 20 and Timmy to almost 21.

Pegusus has an almost healed injury to a hind leg.  He may have been so sick with that, it had obviously been horribly infected, that he couldn’t get out to find food for several days or a week.  This may be why he was so emaciated.  As the doctor at the clinic said, “I hope it’s just lack of groceries that caused his emaciated look.”

Pegasus looking worried, wondering if there are enough groceries for him.

Thanks to Beth, he’s getting lots of groceries now!

Be Pegasus’ HERO and click to help buy him groceries and medicine.   http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/donate.php

For Donations of $25 or more to help Pegasus, I’ll send you an official Pegasus Pill Popper!!!  Just make a comment on your donation and be sure to include your address!  Beth, let me know where to send yours!

Ting Ting Plans an Escape
Ting Ting is a high cat.  High cats like to be as high as they can get.  They are the ones on top of the kitchen cabinets and on top of the refrigerator.  They are the ones always seeking the highest point they can find no matter how precarious.

Ting Ting loves to climb to the top of shelves, to the top of cages, and perch on the top of doors.

Valerie came in the other day with all kinds of burrs stuck in her hair and all over her sweater.  And carrying Ting Ting on her shoulders.  What happened?

Katarina ran up to close the gate, well, she really drove up. The gate is more than half a mile away from the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center.  Ting Ting must've snuck in her car, because when she opened the door at the gate, Ting Tang jumped out.  Katarina could catch her.  So she called Valerie on her cell phone.  Valerie is Rikki's Refuge is very own Cat Whisperer.  Valerie immediately ran up to the gate.

Ting Ting thought it was a great game and kept running through the woods, up one tree and down another, through the brambles.  Valerie kept up with her and finally convinced her to come jump on her shoulder.

Baby Face Gets a Home

You may remember a couple of weeks ago I mentioned a feral kitty who came from a Speuter Clinic that does side spays, and that they shaved almost half the cat just so they could cut an itty bitty one-inch hole.  We were concerned about what to do, because this is like taking away half of your long underwear, and still expecting you to play outside.

She was supposed to move into one of our Cat Runs, which has a lot of protection, but does not have additional climate control.  You have to have your winter coat live there.  She did, until so much of it was shaved off.  Now what to do?

A feral kitty would be terribly miserable having to live in a cage until spring.  But letting her go out to a cat run with other feral friends, might make her sick with so much for missing.  Decisions, decisions, decisions.

But she solved the problem all by herself. She's not feral after all!.  She was just a poor scared kitty who walked into a trap.  And now she loves to be held and snuggled.  She's a little girl, probably only six or seven months old.

Anne comes to wash dishes at least one day a week, and she loves to play with the kitties in the quarantine room, which is where dishes get washed.  She started playing with Baby Face, and they both fell in love.

Very soon, Baby Face will be going home to live with Anne.

Ivory bar soap floating was a mistake. They had been overmixing the soap formula causing excess air bubbles that made it float. Customers wrote and told how much they loved that it floated, and it has floated ever since.

Lots of things that started as a mistake at Rikki's Refuge, turned into great ideas to.  It's been an experiment from day one, learning how to take care of so many different animals of so many different species.  Our visitors are always surprised at how well everybody gets along with each other and how happy everyone is here.

Good Times in the News
An important bill is making its way through the Virginia House and Senate. This is a short session so may be rushed through. I am asking all Virginia residents to write their reps about the following:

HB2195 will make devocalization of dogs and cats a felony:

G. Any person, including a licensed veterinarian, who performs a surgical devocalization on a cat or dog when such procedure is not necessary to treat or relieve an illness, disease, or injury or to correct a congenital abnormality that is causing or may cause the animal physical pain or harm, is guilty of a Class 6 felony.

H. Any person convicted of violating this section may be prohibited by the court from possession or ownership of companion animals.

§ 54.1-3812.2. Records of devocalization procedures; audit.

Any licensed veterinarian who performs a surgical devocalization on a cat or dog shall keep a record of such procedure for a period of four years, as prescribed by the Board. Such records shall be subject to audit by the Board.

Can a Domestic Cat Be Trained As Well As a Dog?
by April Holladay, HappyNews Columnist
Q: Can a domestic cat be trained as well as a dog? Because, I've tried to train mine without much success...

A: It depends... Certainly we can train some cats as easily as dogs to do certain things, for example, fetch. Some cat breeds (Bengals, Siamese and Burmese) naturally carry objects (like kittens) in their mouths, so they're easy to train. But I know of no breed of cat that leads the blind. Or herds sheep. We have trained and bred dogs for useful work and as companions, so both dogs and humans have adapted to each other. Cats — not so much.

Domestication of dogs
Recent Swedish and Chinese studies suggest humans domesticated dogs about 16,000 years ago in southeastern Asia south of Yangtze River. By "domesticated," I mean the DNA of dogs has changed to adapt to human purposes. Geneticists analyzed genes in the food-to-energy conversion part of animal cells (the mitochondria) of dogs to determine their origin. The researchers studied the genes of about 1,500 dogs from across the Old World. They found that dogs descended from 51 female wolf founders — and discovered clues about ancient human activity.

"The place and time of canine domestication," writes Zhang, "coincide approximately with the origin of rice agriculture, suggesting that the dogs may have originated among sedentary hunter-gatherers or early farmers." Otis, the boxer, for instance, comes from a line of hunting dogs used for centuries in Germany in the pursuit of bear, boar and deer. A boxer's job is to seize the prey in its massive jaws and hold it until the hunters arrive to kill the animal. Over the years, humans selected the best dogs for hunting and those dogs prospered under human care. Thus, a breed with genes programmed for hunting developed.

Domestication of cats
In 2007, researchers examined the mitochondrial genes of about 980 domestic cats and five subspecies of wildcats from three continents to determine when and where humans domesticated cats. The studies showed human association with cats began much more recently than dogs, probably about 9000 years ago as the earliest farmers of the Fertile Crescent [approximately where modern-day Iraq is] domesticated grains and cereals as well as livestock animals.

Cats helped early farmers by killing rodent pests infesting stored grains. You might think people domesticated cats because cats kept the rodent population down. It's more likely, however, we didn't bring cats into our homes, they brought themselves in. Cats like to chase mice; it's instinctive behavior. We never trained cats to hunt rodents. But we did provide a profitable place to hunt: many mice and few predators. So cats domesticated themselves merely by evolving a tolerance for people. "And — voila! — they had adapted to their new niche."

Human communication
Thus, humans have had twice as long to train and communicate with dogs (16,000 years) as cats (9,000 years), so dogs train easier. Moreover, cats started associating with humans doing what they wanted to do — hunt and kill rodents. Whereas, dogs emerged from wolf family packs that hunted together. Dogs have been strongly selected for "an innate ability to learn complicated tasks", such as shepherding, retrieving and guarding, which often require communication with humans, Driscoll says. In contrast, domestic cats do not "intuit the intentions of others" (either human or feline) to the extent that dogs do and that hinders a cat's ability to follow directions.

But cats can communicate with humans just as effectively as dogs, in some situations. If a human points to food, cats can find the food as easily as dogs, for example. In 2005, animal behaviorists studied 24 cats and 21 dogs to see how well the two species could use human cues to find food. Each cat trotted into a bare room containing two pots — one to the left of the animal and one to the right. The human tester kneeled on the floor in front of the cat and pointed to the pot with the food in it. The cat immediately walked to the correct pot and started eating. The same thing happened with each dog. No problem. Miklósi found no significant difference between how the cat and dog groups responded as the humans pointed to the pot containing food.

So next the experimenters hid the food under a stool and tied the food to the stool so the animal could not pull the food out to eat it. The animal's owner stood nearby but did not help. The experimenters did not help either. Instead they watched what the cat or dog did in the presence of his or her owner. They found no significant difference in the time a cat or a dog spent sitting or standing next to hidden food or gazing at it without trying to get the food. But they did notice that cats spent significantly longer times poking at the food, trying to solve the problem, and dogs started looking at their owners for help sooner than cats did and gazed at their owners for longer durations. Also, dogs looked at the inaccessible food and then at the owner and back at the food more frequently than cats did. It was as if the dog was saying, "The food's there, pal, but I can't get it; help me." Whereas, the cat, used to hunting by itself in the wild, tried to solve the problem not expecting help from the human.

This is not to say cats don't bond with humans. They do. Bengal cats often follow their human companions around from room to room. Miklósi thinks the dog eye-contact is a reason people find dogs easier to train than cats. On the other hand, cats rarely look at people for help in solving a problem. "Although both species show evidence of flexible learning, in general dogs seem to be much easier to train," Miklósi says. Because training animals involves many communicative signals (gazing, verbalization, etc.) and relies on a similar type of "feedback", dogs have a "natural advantage" by using frequent eye contacts, Miklósi says. Otis, the boxer, finally went after the stick in deep water after a backward gaze to his owner. He knew then, he was on the right track.

Refuge News
WOW WEE it’s been so busy at the refuge I didn’t even get time to talk to you yesterday.

Laurie came out.  She’d donated these wonderful split buckets that can hang over a fence.  They are absolutely fabulous for carrying supplies for working and cleaning around.  Thank you!  Laurie is our Director of Festivals and Events for 2011.  All kinds of fun things, like Pet Fiesta, Wine Festivals and so on.  If you’d like to help out and volunteer at these events, contact Laurie at lkarnay@yahoo.com

Autumn-Sky came and brought dishwashing liquid she got for FREE.  You can do that too.  Want to know her secret??  She had a coupon for 50 cents off.  The store was having a Double your Coupons.  She found a little bottle for 99 cents that qualified.  So with the coupon it was free!!!  She had several coupons so was able to get a whole bag full of bottles!!!  That’s a lot of dishes we can wash.

And it’s not just dishwashing liquid you can get for free.  Save those coupons, watch the sales, wait for double your coupon and WHAM you can get all kinds of things for free.  Cat food, dog food, bleach, dishwashing  liquid, floor cleaners, laundry detergent, trash bags, paper towels, spray bottles (best way to buy them is with product in them).

Somebody recently asked why I’m not begging for cat litter.  We had a huge donation a couple months ago and we’re doing fine in that department.  We need the NUMS !!!!!

Adam and Helen came out and washed the huge pile of dishes.  They’d brought fruits and veggies for the Rabbit s and Guinea Pigs and while up there feeding them, they also cleaned Rabbit Rotunda.  Any help feeding and cleaning is always a big help.  it’s a little less my hooman staff has to do so then they have time to try and catch up on their long long list of TO DO.

Angela and Mariza came out.

Fred came out and brought donations he’d collected in the Northern Virginia area.

Jan came out and brought detergent and bleach and paper towels.

Mary came out and sorted the mail and worked on all the paper work that generates and logged checks and got the donations into the bank so I can turn them into Fancy Feast.  She takes care of most of the Business stuff and is the one you’re often talking to on the phone too.

Ron stopped in and picked up the mail coming thru Orange.  He enjoys doing lots of kitty loving.  This is Betty getting loved.

Barbara volunteered at the Voices for Animals Feral Cat Speuter Clinic in Charlottesville.  Pegasus was a black and white kitty who’d been trapped and brought in.  He was looking down.  Terribly skinny, I mean terribly, hips sticking out.  Gooey on his eyes and nose.  Lungs ok but icky cold and snotty.  Injured hind foot.  He was under anesthesia and they decided to put him to sleep because in his condition he couldn’t go back to his feral colony.   Barbara began to cry and said, the poor guy, he’s been starving.  Is it right to just kill him cuz he’s had no food?  Can’t we try to save him?  Doesn’t he at least deserve a chance?  She called mom real quick and said can Rikki’s try?

Yes, we would try!!  Sometimes you can’t win.  But lots of time if you really try, you can.  And we are going to give Pegasus the best try we can.

Ron, who was out working, dropped what he was doing and rushed off to Charlottesville to pick Pegasus up.  Mom and Lena were very anxious for him to hurry hurry and get back so they could access poor Pegasus and get to work saving him.  When he arrived two hours later, he was still a bit unconscious from the anesthesia.  His heart seemed a bit faint.  So they held him and warmed him up and rubbed him, and soon he began to wake up.  Mom talked to the doc who was working at the clinic and got Pegasus started on meds.

Eating, tlc and just nursing care is what the poor buy needed.  He’s not very old either.  By 6 pm he was awake and starting to eat.  He’s eating canned food like he’ll never see any more.  Poor baby.  As of right now it sure looks like he’s going to be just fine.  He’s hissing a little bit but mom doesn’t think he’s really feral.  Just scared.

Please help up save Pegasus. I think together we can do it.  We’ll give him the care and the tlc and medicine and all the food he can eat.  I need YOU to buy him food and medicine and help us save him.  Will you help Pegasus?  Be a STAR - click the star to help.

Thank you Dr. Caroline Prior for volunteering at the Voices for Animals Feral Cat Speuter Clinic and for being in favor of trying to save Pegasus.  Thank you Voices for Animals for running such a wonderful Speuter Clinic.

Bob picked up a dog house someone donated and brought it out.  It’s the coolest, most unique dog house you’ve ever seen.

You’re really sure that’s a dog house?  The kitties .......

Here’s Bob live on Vincent Video explaining the origin of the dog house!

It’s real heavy and took lots of folks to unload!  Rarely do you get more than one episode of Vincent Video in a day, but today, you’re in luck!

Bob also brought out bags and bags of doggy nums!

Cindy came out with her car teeming full of cat food and supplies. She worked all day Saturday and is coming out again today cuz it’s a holiday.  She took care of all the doggies and was a docent on Saturday and helped with lots of chores and unloading and putting away donations.

Thank you to all the folks who came to drop something off during Donation Drop Off hours on Saturday.  Donation Drop Off is every Saturday from noon - 2 pm.

Rikki’s Refuge is a great place to do Community Service.  Two teens are working on fulfilling some hours and Katarina led them thru many chores.  Many High Schools require Community Service now as part of the curriculum of raising socially conscious individuals.  It counts for lots of points on College Applications too.  Some work places give a day or two a year paid leave to their staff to do Community Service.  And of course minor offenses are often assigned community service in court.  Check in first if you need to do court ordered Community Service, depending on the nature of the offense, you may be able to do it at Rikki’s.  Any one who’s committed any form of animal abuse, hooman abuse or violent acts cannot volunteer at Rikki’s, Community Service or not.

One of the teen boys doing Community Service has his dad pick him up in the afternoon.  He gave his dad a quick tour of the Refuge and he was so impressed he wants to volunteer too!

The first time you visit you’ll have to read over the rules and regs and fill out a form stating that you agree and that you fit in certain guidelines.

And speaking of another kind of Community Service, Jan is now supporting 29 classrooms around the country who receive Kind News.  Kind News is a monthly publication that arrives to sponsored classrooms monthly with an issues for each child and a special teaching edition for the teacher.  These classrooms are headed up by  teachers who’ve made the commitment to teach Humane Education to their kids and who follow the guides and outlines and study sessions in Kind News!

David and his brother (I’m sorry my little kitty brain forgot your name) worked on Rabbit Rotunda II roof.  That’s all that’s left to finish this wonderful project!!!

Several pigeons are hoping to move into Rabbit Rotunda II when it’s finished.  Five doves have been living in a cage inside the 9th Life Center and are really looking forward to getting out and spreading their wings.  Though they won’t be able to move until spring when it warms up since they’ve been living in a climate controlled area over the winter.

The waiting list of rabbits and guinea pigs who wan to move in has gotten long since the original Rabbit Rotunda filled to capacity.  Most of them are living in little hutches or small aquariums now and will be so happy to get to come to Rikki’s Refuge and have so much freedom and running and playing space they’ll think they moved to the jungle!

Dennis came out with lots of food for the Piggy Paradise.  Along with the REACH kids, a special program for special needs kids, he recycles school cafeteria food for the animals.  So much salad and fruits and veggies. They separate the food groups by dietary requirements for the different animals.

Jan and Larry, Rikki’s Original Sweethearts, celebrated their 11th Anniversary on Saturday!!!  They made very generous donations in honor of each other and their time together!!!  Wait till you see what they have coming for Valentine’s Day !!!   Stay tuned .....

Katarina led volunteers on Saturday, worked with volunteers and lead a tour on Sunday and will be working with volunteers today.

Ken came out with fruits and veggies for the bunnies and guinea pigs.  And with the CD of the TV program that ran just before Christmas.  We’d all been waiting and holding our breath to see it.  Autumn-Sky and James were the hoomans on the show and Anya, Peppers and Peter were the animal representatives.  I worked for hours trying to down load it yesterday and it was about ¾ of the way done and my paw hit something wrong and it went kaput!  So I’ll try again when I have the chance to get to high speed.

Here’s Timmy watching it on my puter.

Ken earned his Docent Badge now so you’ll see him from time to time on Saturday during Donation Drop Off, noon - 2 pm.  Ken helped a nice couple who came out to donate some funds and supplies.  They friends, Don and Libby, had told them about Rikki’s Refuge.  Don and Libby first learned of Rikki’s from a story in the Free Lance Star in 2005 and have been supporters ever since.  Make sure you tell your friends!  I bet you have several friends who don’t even know about Rikki’s Refuge and I bet they’d love to make our dream a reality!!  So tell your friends!

Paul came out and helped with Docent duties.  He’s an official Docent too .  Candy wasn’t feeling well so she couldn’t come out.  Get well quick Candy!!

Rene is working on some more cat nesting boxes for the cat houses.  She delivered a new one, which met Vincent’s approval!

Rene brought mom fudge on Saturday and banana bread on Sunday.  He he he mom’s gonna get fat like me and then she can’t tease me no more!

Cassie and Sydney are Bob Wallace’s little nieces and he’s told them all about Rikki’s Refuge.  They saved up their money and made pretty envelopes and each sent $25 to Rikki’s.  Wasn’t that sweet?
bob and cards

Barbara brought a whole suv full of all kinds of supplies.  From cleaning things, to food, to brochure holders.

Mary Ellen and David stopped in.

Grace and Toni came out to volunteer and help with the Sunday Tour.  Tour every Sunday at Noon this year!!  Grace joined Teen Care last summer and really stood out as a leader.  She’s been a tremendous help to us animals.  She’s a Docent and a Tour Guide and knows how to take care of most all the animals!

Lloyd stopped by and brought newspapers for the cages.

Bill checked out the work that is still needed in the Quarantine Building before we can actually use it for animals.  He’s picking up some supplies and will be working on it today!!  Yipppee - we can’t wait till it’s done.  Then the current Quarantine Room will move to the new Quarantine Building and Medical Treatment will move to the old Quarantine Room and then Medical Treatment will become Old Dogs!!!!  It’s always a shuffling act at Rikki’s!!  Oh if only we has SO much more space!!

Mom discovered something new.  Kenobi eats so fast that she throws up.  Always.  Mom is now putting her food in this special ice cube tray.  It’s got little itty bitty sections, so Kenobi has to work at getting it out.  Now it takes her a long time to eat her breakfast and she has fun trying to get every last drop and she doesn’t throw up!

Dear Vincent
Why can’t you take one more cat?
Lots of you have questions about Rikki’s Refuge.  I’ll pick one or two a day to answer here.  Ask your questions in the blog comments or sent to me at Vincent@RikkisRefuge.org

QUESTION: My friend tried to get a cat into Rikki's and was told there was no room. How can you have free-roaming cats and not have room for just one more? Who decided which animals get to come to Rikki's?   Pete

ANSWER: Pete, I so wish we could take in every animal, cat and others, who needed a home.  That’s the hardest part of being here, knowing there are so many more that need our help.

There are “legal limits” on how many animals can be in how big of a space and all kinds of rules like that.  There are practical limits too.  When animals, hoomans included, are crowded they get mean and they get sick and they have all kinds of problems.  It might not be too bad if you had to live in a cage for a few days or weeks till you got a forever home.  But at Rikki’s Refuge most of our animals will live the rest of their natural lives.  So they have to have lots or comfortable space so they stay healthy and happy.

When we can afford to build more housing and we have the money to take care of the new housing and the animals that will live in it - we will.  It’s sad that it all comes down to money.  We have room to build lots and lots more housing.  Before we can build it, we must know that we have enough money coming in every day, this year and next and forever to feed, and medicate and provide care to it’s residents.  It we be a really bad disaster to build houses, let critters move in and then find out there was no money to feed them or care for them when they were sick.

We do have a lot of land.  And a lot of space to run around in.  Yet everybody who’s allowed to run around, also has a housing area.  They can’t just come here and then be off to the woods to take care of themselves.  So there has to be room for them too.  And they have to be fed and taken care of, and if they get sick we have to pay their bills.

The intake committee of hoomans decide how many of what species can come.  They want to let everybody in too, but they know if they do, it would eventually mean no food or care for any of us and then we’d all die.  And so when somebody wants to come, they look at space first and say, “where will they live?”  Then they look at the budget real carefully, dividing up for everybody, and seeing if there’s enough left over to pay the bills for a new resident.  And when there is - somebody gets to come!!
