Chicken City in the News

Monday night it was COLD out there. WINDY too. Not a creature is stirring EXCEPT Beauty and KiKi who think it's finally cold enough to really run and play and gallop all over. They're Pyrenees doggies and they like it COLD. I am not a Pyrenees cat and I don't!!!

Chickens go to bed at dark. If they haven't made it to their bed they sort of go comatose where ever they are when it gets dark. Mom was out picking up supplies and not here at dusk. She got home just after dark. She went to shut Chicken City’s door - usually everybody would be home and sleeping. BUT there were chickens sitting on top of the fence, on top of dog houses and packed into dog houses. HUH??????   What was wrong?

The door to Chicken City had blown shut so they couldn't get home. Uh Oh. Mom spent an hour picking chicken up & carrying them to bed in Chicken City. They grip tight and she had to peel their feet off the fences. Silly chickens. About 60 were out & had to be carried to bed & tucked in. One woke up & was dazed but could still outrun mommey & they ran & ran all over till mom caught her.  At least that warmed mommey up!

Yesterday, She-Who-Opens-Cans had Billy build a latch to keep the door to Chicken City open during the day so it can't blow shut in the wind.  I guess she didn’t think it was fun putting all the chickens to bed!

When she went out last night to close the door to Chicken City up for the night, Vista Kitty followed her out to help. It was already pretty dark but the moon was out so she didn't take a flash light. Silly hooman.  What if a bear had been waiting in there to catch her and eat her - then I’d have missed my dinner!

She went in the gate, shut and latched the door, came out and shut and latched the gate. Then heard this awful ruckus banging on the door ..... She went back to see what was going on and Vista had gotten locked inside and was pounding on the door to get out!

Big Thank You
to everyone who’s sent gifts, Virginia for Fancy Feast, Alicia for snuggy pads, and who ever sent the three heaters!!!  We LOVE ‘em especially right now.  They didn’t have a note saying who sent them - but we love you anyway!!!

Siamese Cat Rescue Thank You

Any rescues or people who work with rescues - if you need any crates or carriers, please let us know.  Often places have a lot to give away and nobody else goes and gets them so our volunteers do.  We use lots, but there’s even more so we’re happy to give some to you if you need them for rescued animals.   If you’re a private individual and would like something for your own pet, please talk to us about making a donation.

Paul and Billy gave mom a really nice Christmas Present
You remember the two giant tractor trailers of litter we got last month?  Well we have to pay rent on the trailers for every month they stay here.  But finding a place to store that much stuff .....   And we can’t afford to buy a building.  Gosh wouldn’t that be nice.  Anybody out there a Morton Salesperson who can arrange a donation!!!!  So Paul and Billy worked every day - moving a pallet or more of litter and stashing it all around.  Every dry and safe nook and crannie is now storage for cat litter and one of the trailers is empty!!!!  Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving!!!

OH OH OH DID I TELL YOU THE REALLY GOOD NEWS?
The “suspect” has been charged with stealing the things from Rikki’s back in October!!!  Yippee.  There will be a trail.  We don’t know when yet.  We hope she gets to spend Christmas locked up in a cage at jail and that nobody will take her home to foster for the holidays.  Bad bad hooman.

Christmas Day Tour at Noon

Last tour of 2010.  Join Jan Chetnik, our professional tour guide, for a trip around the refuge meeting all the happy critters of Rikki’s Refuge.  The tour is all outdoors so dress for the weather and before heading out that day call 540-854-0870 x3 to confirm that it’s on.  Bad weather shuts down our road very quickly and for your safety we have to cancel if it’s been too wet or there’s any ice.

There is only one tour so please be prompt.  Gates open at 11:30 am and the tour begins at noon and runs approximately 2 hours.  Our comfort facilities are porta potties (thank you Larry for supporting Larry’s Lou again during 2010, you’ve made a lot of us very comfortable with almost indoor plumbing), litterboxes and the bushes!!!

Admission is a case of canned cat food per person - Special for Christmas.  Please feel free to be more generous!!!

New Years Pristine Nature Hike

First event of 2011 - the traditional New Year’s Hike.  Over the river and thru the woods, and we’re not kidding.  You might find some trails or you might blaze them.  Follow Fred’s bright orange vest - and please wear bright orange or red yourself, no hunting on our property but poachers have been known to trespass - and he’ll get you back to the complex sooner or later!!!  The November hike took a few twists and turns and ambled thru the brambles - but they did arrive alive and uneaten by bears!!!!

Nature hike takes off at noon sharp.  Don’t be late cuz you can’t catch up.  Gates open at 11:30 am on the first.

It’s outdoors so dress for the weather and before heading out that day call 540-854-0870 x3 to confirm that it’s on.  Bad weather shuts down our road very quickly and for your safety we have to cancel if it’s been too wet or there’s any ice.

Pet Friendly Housing
It’s a housing search web site, listing pet friendly listings all over the USA.  She’s hoping to help people from giving up their pet due to moving.  She created this web site after searching for an apartment that would accept her Jack Russell Daisy, and Beagle Jerry. As a pet owner she found it difficult to find pet friendly apartments, and now wants to help other pet owners find a home quick and easy. She also promote "Adoption." A lot of times when people are moving to a new home, they have a new furry friend in mind. They may even be searching for pet friendly apartments with the plan of getting a pet soon. She wants to promote adopting instead of the local puppy store.

Duke Meets Santa
Mary Ellen sends in a picture of her beloved Duke telling Santa what he wants for Christmas.  She adopted Duke from FOHA and he’s the absolute love of her life!

Mary Ellen recently met Rikki’s Refuge when her neighbor died, leaving behind four outdoor kitties.  There was no family in the area to care for them.  So Mary Ellen took over and made the arrangements between his estate and Rikki’s Refuge so the kitties could live together for the rest of their lives.  Mary Ellen now volunteers to help all the animals at Rikki’s Refuge.

On the Fourteenth Day of Christmas
Rikki’s welcomed your help to trap
and fix all the feral kitties.

fourteen feral kitties happily helped to the speuter clinic
We’re getting close to Christmas and people are thinking about others.  Let’s help the feral kitties.  We could really, really use as many of these feral cat TNR (trap, neuter, return) traps as possible – both for work we do here at Rikki’s and to support our Wild and Feral division. We never use traps to catch and kill!  The more of these traps we have, the more cats we can help get to the speuter clinic.
