What are you?

Paul and Rachel Chandler have been released by Somali pirates after 388
days in captivity.

Yikes Pirates! I only takes your Fancy Feast. But I share with you if

I sure hope I don't have to do no fundraiser for 7 million dollars to
get mommey's family back. All of her family, her daddy, her brother and
her son are on a boat and sailing around the world. I'm glad they left
her behind to take care of everybody's anifurs. We hopes they have a
nice, fun and safe journey!

We had a wonderful day yesterday. Lots of sun and fun and visitors to
hug and love! We ended up with two tours! The nature hike got a bit
off the beaten path - but they got back in before dark. All safe and
nobody was eaten by bears.

Only two more days till the litter comes !!! I need a pallet jack.
Nobody got one laying around the garage???

We're going to rent storage until we come up with a sloution for 800 sq
ft of watertight space. Ideas welcome!

Denise Halderman made an awesome offer!!! Her Dad passed away in May.
He always was a big supporter of anything to do with animals and she'd
always meant to bring him up to Rikki's Refuge but time ran out. And now
in honor of her Dad, she's challenging all the rest of the Rikki's
supporters out there to donate towards the cat litter storage. All
donations up to $2,000.00 she will match. Her Dad would have loved this.

We're almost there - only a few hundred shy of telling Denise we made
her $2,000 challenge! If you can toss in a few bucks to help us reach
the challenge we'll be forever indebted.

Do it's double your dollar time !!!!

Double your Donation for Denise's Dad !!!

http://bit.ly/BeMyHero

Please help with the litter storage and every penny you donate (up to
$2,000) will be doubled in honor of Denise's Dad !!!

Pumpkins still at Meadows Farm rt 3 Spotsylvania! Go pumpkin people GO
!!! Can't you find any anywhere. Somebody brought some home to their
house in Gordonsville and need them picked up from there and brought to
Rikki's. Only a car full - let me know if YOU can do it!!!

Ask for Mike at Meadow Farms - he's keeping the pumpkins in the back for
us - so don't assume they're gone if you don't see any. Also the corn
stalks.

And any place with gourds, corn, indian corn, corn stalks, hay, straw.
We use it all.

See any stands with pumpkins left? They're waiting for you to bring out
for the pigs and goat and sheep and cows and rabbits and guinea pigs and
chickens. Everybody loves pumpkins. Delicious and healthy. And every
day we have enough to feed saves us about $30. So haul in the pumpkins!!!!

And the Fancy Feast !!!

Today is tour time! Yippee NOON tour - about two hours, all outside, so
dress for the weather. That means layers, cuz it goes from hot to cold
quick this time of year. One can of cat food admission per person.
Gates open at 11:30 am.

2 pm is the Nature Hike. Wear blaze orange. Admission is one case of
cat food. It's several miles over pristine trails, blazed by the deer.
Good footwear!

Today Bob is coming out with 14 round bales of hay - DONATED !!!!!

Tom got the railroad ties donated to set the kitty litter trailers on.
Yippee !!!! Bob is bringing them too!!!

Are you missing me? I'm writing Reflections the newsletter and working
real hard to get it to the printer quick. It's going good and folks
contributed lots of good stories. I want to share with you but then
I'll spoil all your fun. So I guess you'll have to wait!

If not be quick to adopt. It's very healthy to have a multi species
household. You know we're really good for your health!

I need a gift that I can't eat. Bummer, I hate asking for those!

A pallet jack. If you don't have one you can donate then can we borrow
it for the next 10 months - or any portion there of - while we use up
our kitty litter that will be delivered Tuesday. We will need to move
the pallets about in the trailer to load into our pickup and haul to
Feline Fields! We need a hydraulic lift type and not electric. The
electrics are way to heavy to lift in the trailers and they require
charging and we don't have electricity near the trailers.

I also need YOU to put on your thinking cap to figure out how to get 800
sq ft of storage at the refuge. Permanent storage. We're renting two
trailers - like tractor trailers - for now. It'd be better to put that
money to use buying something so we have it for next time. Think think
think ask ask ask - there must be a solution. A little birdie told me
Melissa might have the answer, keep paws crossed!

Bee Brains Can Outsmart Computers
A new study shows that bees are experts at solving the "traveling
salesman" problem.
True, they can brew delicious honey, create amazing hives, and, if
you're not careful, give you a whopper of a sting—but those aren't the
only talents that bees have. According to a new study from University of
London, the tiny insects can solve complex math problems that a computer
would take days to crank out.

Bees are experts at the "traveling salesman problem," says Dr. Nigel
Raine, since they are able to simply work out the most efficient route
to pollinate all the flowers in their path. "They visit flowers at
multiple locations and, because bees use lots of energy to fly, they
find a route which keeps flying to a minimum."

Raine and his team tested a group of bees' true intellect by setting up
a group of computer-controlled artificial flowers for bees to explore.
He wanted to see if the bees would simply fly to each flower in the
order that they discovered them, or if they would quickly deduce the
quickest and most efficient path from one to the next. Sure enough, as
soon as they had discovered all of the flowers, they'd created a far
quicker route.

Given that bees have brains no bigger than grass seeds, it's a
scientific marvel that they're able to work out such complex problems.
Meanwhile, we can't even work out where we left our keys.

Showing just what Try Try Try Again can really do!!!!
Dan Cummings, who was paralyzed in an accident, just walked a mile to
support his non-profit Journey Forward. A decade ago, Boston man Dan
Cummings broke his neck in a diving accident. He lost the use of his
arms and legs, and was told that he would never walk again.

But he didn't believe it. He decided to move to California, where he
could take part in an intense physical therapy regime with a program
called Project Walk, which uses standing-frame therapies, electrical
stimulation, and other innovative methods to help patients regain their
motor skills. And, after four years, his exercise regime had begun to
work: he returned home to Boston, walking with the help of a walker.
Cummings' friends and relatives were amazed by the transformation that
Project Walk had made in him—and now that Cummings was walking, he had a
new resolution.

"I had a new goal to bring that program back to Boston so others
wouldn't have to move 3,000 miles away to find a place that would help
them walk," he told the Boston Herald. So two years ago, Cummings
founded a non-profit physical therapy center in his hometown, called
Journey Forward. Now, the center has five full-time specialists and 33
clients, including Matt Brown, a paralyzed teenage athlete who had
regained the ability to move his feet thanks to his sessions there.

And on Saturday, Cummings showed how far he had come in a fundraising
walk for his organization. Using his walker, he walked a full mile—and
helped to raise $75,000 in donations for Journey Forward. "Physically,
I'm beat," Cummings said after the walk, "but emotionally I feel like
I'm flying."

My planet is wet and soggy today! How's yours? I think the trees and

haul it all out of the plant within two weeks and she had a lot of
trotting to do. She laid down. She wouldn't get up. She said now if
it was 86,000 pounds of oreos .....

So I was in a real dilemma. Taco and me thought about stealing mom's
truck ...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4132899817/
.... but it's kinda a little truck and wez get scared driving on the
big highway. The bad state police might arrest us. Here in Orange they
just send the nice lady from animal control to make us go home. But
what if we gotted arrested in the big city and they put is in the pound?

Mike and Melissa and John are going to rent big trucks BUT they need
four trucks. They can rent four but they need a driver! That truck is
too big for me. It's a 24' Budget Box Truck - would you drive?

Melissa is the lady who hauled in all the litter when we got a whole
rail road car donated way back in 2001. She's a BIG truck driver. Back
then she was driving for Anheuser-Busch and picking up corn at the rail
road station and hauling it over and then hauling the left over mash to
a pig farm. Too bad that wasn't Rikki's!! They let her borrow a
company truck and haul the litter.

The people she's working for now aren't as nice. BUT Melissa and her
husband John are going to rent trucks along with Mike I just NEED ONE
MORE DRIVER.

AND I NEED YOUR HELP TOO - EVEN IF YOU DON'T DRIVE when we know the day
it's coming I need EVERYBODY to come help us unload!! It's gonna be a
great big huge delivery!!! And I NEED you. Please tell me if you'll
help me?

Please let me know
Can you drive a 24' box truck, on day during the week?

Will you come to Rikki's to help unload?

I keep forgetting to show you these wonderful pictures!

How come you hooman's make it so much harder to vote than I do? I let
you vote sitting right there in front of your computer, nothing but
click, click, click, and it's all done! And what do you do? You make
the humans go out in the cold, drive somewhere, stand in line in the
cold, and vote. And which one of you hooman's decided that people ought
to vote one of the first few days it really gets cold around here? I
mean, come on, you all ARE smart enough, aren't you, to know that it's
always going to be cold the first week of November?

So, I think that should be enough of a campaign argument, to vote for
Vincent! Be sure you check your ballot closely, Vincent D. Cat is the
guy for you! And if I'm not on the ballot in your area, make sure you
run for any cat voting. You want to see this planet run right? Put us

Rowan is a Cool Dog with a Specialty
Rowan, a German Spitz dog, can run, play, and come when called, just
like the rest of his canine family – but when admirers get a close-up
glimpse of him, they've always got one question for his owner, Sam
Orchard: "Why does he have his eyes closed?" Actually, he doesn't:
Rowan was born without any eyes, due to a genetic defect. "People told
me that I should think about putting him to sleep but I just couldn't
bring myself to do it," Orchard told SWNS.

Rowan, now 18 months old, has learned to adapt perfectly to life with no
sight – and, instead of a walking cane, he uses his bark to help him get
around. Much like bats, Rowan uses the technique of echolocation,
listening for the echo of his voice to help him ground himself in his
surroundings. "He barks to judge the lay of the land and then when I
call his name he knows exactly where I am and comes running," Orchard
said. "He's just amazing. He's so independent and he has a really good
life. He's just like one of the other dogs."

Check out Rowan in action for yourself.

Here's some interesting and unusual friends of mine from around the world.

Cats can make owners happier, healthier and gentler
Why do 33% of the households in the USA have cats? And how do you
explain why there are 16 million more pet cats than dogs?

Yes, kittens are adorable. Yes, they can grow up to be good mousers and
are very entertaining to watch. And yes, cats are independent and don't
require as much care as dogs. But research shows cats can also be
caretakers for us and our families, improve our health and teach us and
our children to be kinder, gentler souls.

Theodora Wesselman is 94 and has lived the past two years with her
elderly cat, Cleo, at TigerPlace, a retirement community in Columbia,
Mo. Their enduring friendship is a classic example of how humans and
animals can become family and look out for each other. Wesselman visits
other residents, and her children stop by, but Cleo is her best friend,
she says. They've been together nearly 21 years. They start and end the
day together. "She sleeps on her own pillow right beside mine,"
Wesselman says. "In the morning, she pecks on my cheek to wake me up.
It's really sweet. I pet her, tell her I love her and take her to the
kitchen to prepare her food." Cleo and Wesselman "live for each other.
I really think they keep each other going," says Mary Kay Swanson, a
TigerPlace employee. (yeahhh to the assisted living and retirement
centers who allow people to keep their best friends!)

Research shows that being able to care for a pet improves our morale,
helps validate us and encourages us to take care of ourselves, says
Rebecca Johnson, director of the University of Missouri's Research
Center for Human-Animal Interaction. The body of research is leading
more retirement communities and universities to roll out the welcome mat
for pets.

Is one pet better for you than another? A cat can't make you healthier
by begging with leash in mouth to go out for a jog, but a purr can lower
blood pressure and quiet a stressed-out brain, research shows. (You see
how unstressed mommy is with all of us right?)

And they insist on compassion. They're enforcers, Johnson says. "A dog
will let you bang it on the head and still love you. A cat won't do
that. Children have to learn to be gentle to cats or the cat will go
away." Some parents welcome feline help reinforcing values during
child-rearing, and the cats become an integral part of the family.

Hairballs and Happy Tails - Rikki's Refuge Newsletter a

RIKKI'S REFUGE - HAIRBALLS AND HAPPY TAILS
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4654847890/
The newsletter of thanks from grateful animals to their beloved rescuers
brought to you by Vincent D. Cat

We are the happy animals of Rikki's Refuge who so thank you for giving
us the gift of our lives. We represent all the animals, the world over,
whose lives have been saved by kind and loving people just like you.
Thank you for being an animal rescuer.

Now, can you explain this to me? How is it that I write to you, turn
around three times, and it's three weeks later? When I used to be just a
lazy kitty cat, I had all the time in the world. Now that I have two
from the sanctuary to save my 1258 friends, all I do is take a breath
and it seems like it's three days later!

Well, as the hooman say, it is been the best of times and it has been
the worst of times.

Since good things are more fun than bad things, let's talk about that first.

YOU ARE SO VOTING EVERY DAY, RIGHT?
It's free, easy, and no junk mail. Vote every day through December
19th. Click on http://bit.ly/VoteVincent and enter Rikkis Refuge of
VA in the USA.

YOU are leading Virginia by a long shot. We seem to remain as number six
on the planet, so get all your friends voting and we can move up to
number one! I know YOU can do it, because you're my HERO!

ONE PIECE OF GREAT NEWS IS THAT PURINA GAVE US 6 WEEKS OF DRY CAT FOOD !!!!
Num Num Num. Mike Wood took his big truck and a trailer all the way to
Pennsylvania and hauled it all the way back here !!!! When Mike does
that driving for us it a long long day on the road thru the mountains,
all so we have lots of nums!! Thank you Mike!

WE HAD A REALLY WONDERFUL TIME SATURDAY OCTOBER 9TH AT VITTLES WITH
VINCENT AT N'S CAFE IN CULPEPER.

Things have changed a little bit on our Flickr page,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/
We now have our photos grouped by events. So instead of giving you
links to every picture, I can just give you the link to the set and
hopefully that will save you lots of time. Time is money, you hooman
say, so maybe if you save some time I can haz Fancy Feast?

So click here for the photo set for N's Cafe Vittles with Vincent
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/sets/72157625269883734/
Once you're here, right underneath the caption "2010 N's Cafe Grand
Opening 10/9" click on detail to see bigger pictures. And they're all
right there!

The nums were really good and we were able to broadcast live on stickam
during almost the whole event, until it got too dark. Lots of my
friends came to visit, many of them were Rikki's alumni! This is my
stickam account where you can watch my videos from the day!
http://www.stickam.com/vincentdcat Since this is new let me know how
well you can access them.

HASN'T IT BEEN JUST THE LOVELIEST FALL WHETHER YOU HAVE EVER SEEN?
The colors are so beautiful, the grass is so green, the trees are yellow
and gold orange and red, the sunsets have been so spectacular, and the
sun rises too. We are so fortunate live on such a beautiful planet. It
IS my favorite planet after all.

ON OCTOBER 23RD WE HAD SO MUCH FUN.
Katarina, Melissa, and many others work really really hard to make this
incredibly spectacular day. It took months of planning but it was so
much fun it was well worth it.

First we have the Fall Furr Festival in the afternoon. That was lots of
fun, I got to tell fortunes, which was really cool. Here's the photo
album.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/sets/72157625114059417/
While the volunteers were setting up, lots of the animals came to help
and supervise. Sally didn't understand why she wasn't allowed to work at
the bake sale and pie walk, but she tried to eat everything! There were
lots of games to play, tours to see all the animals, a piggy kissing
booth, so much fun.

Go to our YouTube page
http://www.youtube.com/user/rikkisrefuge
to see a wonderful video of the piggy kissing booth in action, me
telling fortunes and Jesse the goat stealing somebody's purse!

By the time everybody was leaving, it was getting dark and the full moon
was coming out.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/sets/72157625238854296/

Then we were ready for the Haunted Forest.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/sets/72157625114050407/
Everybody kept running out of the woods screaming, it was really scary,
and the setting was perfect with a huge harvest moon coming up. Check
out the YouTube videos of the Wolfman and more!

SO I'M GONNA TELL YOU THE BAD NEWS NOW
before I get on to upcoming events. It's not really that bad, not
anymore, but that's all because a group of my wonderful HEROES chipped
in to save the animals at Rikki's Refuge.

On October first we were utterly devastated. We love and trust
everybody, so it was an especially hard shock for us. Somebody stole
all of mom's identity, except her passport. Sent she's the CEO of
Rikki's Refuge, they had all the ID to prove that that's who they were.
They also stole checks, credit cards, all kinds of account cards, all
the cards we use to prove we're tax-exempt, the whole package you need
to run around and pretend that you're mommy and to be allowed to use all
of our accounts.

Now that's that, but they did something even worse. They stole the post
office box key and then they went stole all of the mail from the box at
the end of the street and all of the mail from the post office, ¼ of a
month's income used to care for the animals. The refuge survives hand
to mouth. Each week's donations is all we have. That's it. Never
anything spare.

And when mommy sat down to pay the bills, she discovered we had a very
serious emergency. Thankfully, wonderful folks wired donations for the
essentials. Many bills are still due.

This is where I need your help. We need you, the donors, help to
recover the stolen checks. Rikki's needs proof of checks to recover
funds. Checks were probably thrown away. But if you sent a check to
Rikki's PO box September 27 - October 5 and it does not have a rubber
stamping on the back, "For Deposit Only, Life Unlimited of Virginia,
Inc.", notify your bank and Rikki's immediately. If your check wasn't
cashed, I beg, please reissue it to help the animals during this
difficult time.

Credit card donations are listed as "RIKKISREFUG 540-854-0870 VA". If
something looks suspicious, contact your credit card company and Rikki's
immediately.

I'm begging anyone who can spare just a buck or two to help Rikki's
Refuge, please, it's desperately needed at this time.
http://bit.ly/BeMyHero Rikki's Refuge, PO Box 1357, Orange VA 22960.

I'm hoping that, once caught, the thief will be sentenced to doing the
job of Rikki's CEO. By the way, it's not as glamorous as you may think!
It's mostly moving tons of cat litter, cleaning litter boxes, scooping
dog runs, mucking stalls, giving pills to animals who bite and .....
Seems only fair, if they want one part of the identity, they should
get it all !!!!

And I want to thank you very very much for your help as we struggle thru
keeping Rikki's Refuge afloat.

OKAY, SO NOW THE BAD STUFF IS OUT OF THE WAY, AND LET'S GET BACK TO MORE
HAPPY NEWS!

Harvey recovered completely and totally and very rapidly from some
intricate surgery on his neck. KiKi has recovered beautifully from her
eye surgery. Nanny is doing very well. Everybody seems happy and healthy!

And I have a new brofur, and it looks like he's going to survive!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/5121052421/

He had a bad head injury last Saturday night and was unconscious and has
a concussion. He needed 24 hour care for the first several days. Until
last night it appeared that he was blind, but his vision has begun to
return. Today his hearing started coming back. And by afternoon he had a
sense of smell again and was able to eat on his own!

He still need your prayers and love to finish his recovery, but soon
we're hoping he'll be perfectly healthy and looking for a new home.

unbelievable. And the sun is streaking through the clouds and glowing
off the yellow and gold and orange leaves on the hillside. It is really
breathtaking!

definitely detecting light. All your paws and toes crossed for full
return of his eyesight!!!!

First thing I do every morning is go to my website so I can click on the
$100,000 and vote for Rikki's Refuge. WOW the little widget on my
website, www.RikkisRefuge.org has a big red WEATHER ADVISORY notice -
wow does that mean like tornado or something? So I click on it to see
what kind of disaster to expect, and it says it might get cold enough to
freeze tonight. So is this like a disaster? A weather advisory? Or is
this like perfectly normal for this time of year? How come them hooman
are always looking for a disaster? Why not be happy and enjoy the
moment like us kitties do?

Do you know what eye shine is? Have you ever seen the eyes of hundreds
of animals all want up at the same time in the middle of the night?
It's really neat. Even spiders have bright blue eyes. The roosters up
in the trees shine their eyes too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapetum_lucidum

To see it really really well, it has to be dark and you have to hold a
light right up close to your eyes but shining towards the animal you
want to see. Then the whole world just lights up with eyes everywhere!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/182953307/in/set-72157625059962335/

Maybe we'll put Eye Shine Tours on the calendar, what do you think?

Is there anything else you'd like to see on our calendar, where working
on the events, tours, and fun things to do in 2011? Tell me!

This is a fun thing to do, especially since you can do it from your
home, and don't have to go out in the horrible Christmas crowds and traffic.

If you've got great places you like to shop from home at, let me know,
I'm going to be giving recommendations on places to shop for you don't

me as Fancy Feast! http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/Rikkis/ShopAndSave.html
iGive and GoodSearch both help you to get to almost any place you
want to shop, and give us food for sending you there! Try it out, it's
really cool!

This is my new friend we're trying to save.

He's looking good. He's up and walking and most the time sleeps in
normal positions now. He's eating if the food gets put in his mouth.
It seems he can't see or smell. He certainly hears some, at least loud
noises. He loves being patted once he gets used to your hands and feel.

You know fall means Pumpkin Season!
Sunday is Halloween - and we have a tour at noon. After dark on
Halloween most of the stands that have been selling them want the rest
GONE. Please help us help them. Everybody but us cats and the dogs
love pumpkins. Nummy fresh and full of vitamins and good nutrients!

Most places say we have to start hauling out Monday morning and have
them all gone before the next weekend. Can you help haul during the
week? Ask all the stands you see if you can bring their leftovers to
Rikki's. PLEASE !!!

Catnip Candy turns into the Pumpkin Princess this time of year. She has
a message for you!

Hey y'all,

Here we are in October already - prime pumpkin time. Halloween is on
Sunday this year, so all the pumpkin patches will want to be selling
until dark Sunday night. I realize that most of my "Pumpkin Peeps" work
during the week, but if there are any of you out there that can help
thru the week, please contact me. I'll be driving every day beginning
on Monday (actually Immanuel Church on the Hill already has a full load
just waiting for me, and I'm sure that St. Luke's the Mt. Vernon
Methodist will have some as well). Plus we have Pimmit out in Fairfax
that said that we could have their unsold. I would appreciate any help
any of y'all can give me. I need to have all the churches cleaned up by
Sunday service on Nov 7. If you don't have a vehicle to transport them,
at least come and help me load Ms. Blue Dog or our van on Nov 6. Thanks
for your help and your interest in Rikki's.

Rikki's is turning green!! We've been working real hard at recycling at
Rikki's. If you have any good sturdy bins you're not using, please
donate them to us. We're recycling metal, plastic, glass. We've
switched to biodegradable kitty litter, the poop has to go, but the left
over litter is biodegradable so it doesn't have to go to the landfill.
We used to take a truck a day to the landfill and now it's one a truck a
week!!!! We're doing it for our pets, pocketbooks and planet!! Just
like these guys!

from my Santa Melissa dogslife24@comcast.net
PetsMarts has Photos with Santa for their customers. Rescue groups sign
up to be Santa and the Photographer and two helpers each shift. The
proceeds of the photo shoots goes to the rescue group. It's fun, it's
climate controlled and there's no poop. Unless somebody is that scared
of Santa!

We'll be at Central Park, Fredericksburg, Virginia, 4 days, Saturday,
Dec. 4, Saturday the 11th, Sunday the 12th, and Saturday the 18th.

We will be at Cosner's Corner, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Sunday the 5th

We need to be there at 10:30 a.m., and the picture taking is from 11:00
until 4:00. Can you volunteer for one of these days? PLEASE!

Uh Oh I know what mama's gonna be begging for for Christmas!

You into Wrap? We'll be Wrapping at Barnes and Noble, 7 Corners, Falls
Church, VA
This is another great fundraiser with climate control, no heavy lifting,
no poop, no slobber, no fangs, no claws!!! Our dates are 12/20 and
12/21 from 4 pm - 10 pm. Can you be there? Let Candy know
paulcandy214@verizon.net

Anywhere in the country you can ask to set up at Barnes and Noble or
Borders Book and wrap the gifts people purchase there. Donations are
very generous during the holiday season. Would you set up a wrapping
stand at your local Barnes and Noble or Borders Book to help me? One
day would buy lots of Fancy Feast for me! They even supply all the
wrapping paper! All you bring is bows - and you can get about 100 for
$1 at the Dollar Store!!!

It takes all of us working together to make this work and keep all the
animals in food!!!!

Get to work and get fit !!!!!

PS If you don't want your Daily Good News, just let me know! A couple
of you have said you only want Hairballs with out the Good News!!
That's ok! Just tell me. I'm here to make you happy, just tell me how!
If Good New don't make you happy - I could always start Bad News, but,
as you hoomans say, why reinvent the wheel - that's what you've got tv
