From Bill - A True Duck Story from San Antonio , Texas
Something really cute happened in downtown San Antonio this week. Michael R. is an accounting clerk at Frost Bank and works there in a second story office. Several weeks ago, he watched a mother duck choose the concrete awning outside his window as the unlikely place to build a nest above the sidewalk. The mallard laid ten eggs in a nest in the corner of the planter that is perched over 10 feet in the air. She dutifully kept the eggs warm for weeks, and Monday afternoon all of her ten ducklings hatched.

Michael worried all night how the momma duck was going to get those babies safely off their perch in a busy, downtown, urban environment to take to water, which typically happens in the first 48 hours of a duck hatching. Tuesday morning, Michael watched the mother duck encourage her babies to the edge of the perch with the intent to show them how to jump off. Office work came to a standstill as everyone gathered to watch.

The mother flew down below and started quacking to her babies above. In disbelief Michael watched as the first fuzzy newborn trustingly toddled to the edge and astonishingly leapt into thin air, crashing onto the cement below. Michael couldn't stand to watch this risky effort nine more times! He dashed out of his office and ran down the stairs to the sidewalk where the first obedient duckling, near its mother, was resting in a stupor after the near-fatal fall. Michael stood out of sight under the awning-planter, ready to help.

As the second one took the plunge, Michael jumped forward and caught it with his bare hands before it hit the concrete. Safe and sound, he set it down it by its momma and the other stunned sibling, still recovering from that painful leap. (The momma must have sensed that Michael was trying to help her babies.)

One by one the babies continued to jump.. Each time Michael hid under the awning just to reach out in the nick of time as the duckling made its free fall. At the scene the busy downtown sidewalk traffic came to a standstill.. Time after time, Michael was able to catch the remaining eight and set them by their approving mother.

At this point Michael realized the duck family had only made part of its dangerous journey. They had two full blocks to walk across traffic, crosswalks, curbs and past pedestrians to get to the closest open water, the San Antonio River , site of the famed "River Walk." The on looking office secretaries and several San Antonio police officers joined in. An empty copy-paper box was brought to collect the babies. They carefully corralled them, with the mother's approval, and loaded them in the container.. Michael held the box low enough for the mom to see her brood. He then slowly navigated through the downtown streets toward the San Antonio River . The mother waddled behind and kept her babies in sight, all the way.

As they reached the river, the mother took over and passed him, jumping in the river and quacking loudly. At the water's edge, Michael tipped the box and helped shepherd the babies toward the water and to the waiting mother after their adventurous ride.

All ten darling ducklings safely made it into the water and paddled up snugly to momma. Michael said the mom swam in circles, looking back toward the beaming bank bookkeeper, and proudly quacking.

At last, all present and accounted for: "We're all together again. We're here! We're here!"

And here's a family portrait before they head outward to further adventures...

Like all of us in the big times of our life, they never could have made it alone without lots of helping hands. I think it gives the name of San Antonio 's famous "River Walk" a whole new meaning!

How many critters did you adopt out this weekend? Any new fosters? Where did you volunteer? What good things did you see or hear? The more good news we share the godder the planet gets !!!!!

Vincent

WEEKEND NEEDS
Paper towels are desperately low and NO it's not ALL my fault, I'm not
the only one around here who poos on the floor !!!!

Nice smelling stuff to put in the mop water - but no pine sol type stuff
as the pine oil is bad for us.

Cat food - how'd you guess !!! Canned and dry are really needed bad here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4685189111/

High protein high fat puppy food for Lucky doggy who desperately is
trying to gain some weight.
Hey doggies, get your mom or dad to make a $25 minimum donation for Feed
Lucky Fund and I'll send you a sample pack of dog treats !!!!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4654847990/

Carrots, apples, spinach for the rabbits.

Oranges for the guinea pigs.

17 sheets of a good quality tile board for the walls of the new
quarantine building. So far it's coming along great. Bob got it all
cleaned out and ready. Ron and Paul worked on getting extra nails and
thing out the walls and getting supplies together for putting in
windows. Rene has put in two windows.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4685189271/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4685823092/

I need somebody to wire brush the outside and prime and paint. This is
a job anybody can do!!! It's a purrfect weekend for it too !!!!

DO YOU HAVE A SPARE LARGE AQUARIUM?
We've been caring for a box turtle - not a native Virginia one but a pet
someone attempted to release - who then got injured cuz he's not a wild
animal. He had a shell injury and a foot injury. He's all ready for
his new home with our volunteer Ken who's gonna love him forever in a
safe place. As soon as his home is set up. If we can save Ken the
money of buying a large aquarium (minimum 40 gallon, the bigger the
better) then Ken can use his money to buy me cat food instead !!!!!
This adorable turtle is friendly and sticks his head out when you pick
him up and he sleeps with his front feet out and his head on his hands.
Really adorable, but not survival in the wild skills.

IT'S THE 11TH OF THE MONTH ALREADY
and I've hardly been able to pay any of the bills. The feed store said
this week is the last delivery until they are paid in full. I've got a
few more days on the electric bill before they turn it off. The propane
well ... I don't need that now so I'm putting them at the end of the
line.

I'm just keeping up with food we have to pay to pick up right now.
Haven't touched the medical and the prescription bills, and we're out of
flea supplies and need to order more before we're due our drops next
month.

Just taking care of me isn't all that expensive. But I have so many
brofurs and sisfurs to take care of too. There's over 1200 of us here.
That's a really big number. My mom's about bald pulling her hair out
figuring what she can pay to keep them from coming and repossessing us!!
Thanks mom, I don't want to get takened away.

IF YOU CAN HELP THIS MONTH PLEASE DO.
Got any tax refund left over? Can you spare a buck or five or ten? If
you just won the lottery and want to share just let me know !!! But in
the mean time if everybody can help just a little bit it keeps us alive
and healthy !!!

http://www.rikkisrefuge.org/donate.php

Thank you so much!!!! Our very lives depend on you and we all love you
very very much.

IGGY GETTING DRESSED TO GO OUT
Iggy is the friendliest guy you'll ever meet. he loves nothing more
than to ride on your head. Picked up as a stray in Washington DC, he's
now happily living here and doing tours as an educational mascot.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4685184623/

Sam says this iguana is a bit pushy for his taste.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4685818738/

At my age, do I have to put up with this?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikkis_refuge/4685184829/

Sam, almost 20 years old, has now learned to climb the ladder in mom's
office up to Snicker's loft. Snickers is not impressed. Neither is
mom. Sam isn't very good at getting down and usually takes a flying
leap knocking everything off her desk. Mom's always muttering something
about a cat free office. I don't get it - none of us pay rent!

Rene got the second of four windows in the quarantine room!! Half way finished !!!

Bella is a feluk kitty who was planning a move to Rikki's. Through education, acceptance and a lot of hard work, she now has a really truly forever home! We're here for those who can't get a home, but a real live personal home is better than an institution when ever possible.

From Shelby, Thank you so much, I was able to re home Bella with someone in Georgia and we met halfway, as far as I know things are going well for them, and Bella seems to be adjusting well to her new home. Thank the Lord! God bless you all and the work you do for these animals!

Iams recall - apparently a batch of cat food may be low in vitamins and if that is the only food your cat gets it could be deficient. Not only do we mix many different foods, we add a vitamin mix to our kitties diets - so if you're concerned about Iams food you've bought, please donate it to us and we'll make sure it's "doctored up" to be safe for out kitties.

Ryan tells me: A lovely coonhound mama that we rescued & fostered with her TWELVE puppies found her dream home after a lifetime of abuse & neglect. She is loved for her beauty & kindness, but loved even more for her flaws because they make her so special. The little runt we had feared for, is healthy, happy, & also in her perfect home. & her only all black puppy (needless to say we also feared for) was taken into his forever home this past weekend where he has a loving mommy & daddy & a beautiful boxer/lab mix sister to take care if him! It doesn't get much better than saving 13 lives (they were to be euthanized the day they were born!!!). 4 more babies looking for their forever homes!

Big Bucks isn't always better
To get protection from the sun's damaging rays, you won't have to dig deep in your wallet this summer. One of the most effective sunscreens on store shelves is also one of the least expensive, according to a new Consumer Reports study. Up & Up Sport Continuous, which sells at Target for less than $10 for two 6-ounce containers, won top honors for being the "Best Buy" sunscreen.

2-Year-Old Walker Ciorobea Can Name Every Model of Car
Walker Ciorobea, a car-obsessed toddler from South Florida, can identify every type of car model he sees. If you meet him, the very first thing he'll ask you is what kind of car you drive. "It started with one matchbox car, and it's just grown into a huge obsession," Lynley Ciorobea, Walker's mother, told Gimundo. "He started to learn a few cars, and within a week or two, he could name every car on the road."

Walker's father, a car enthusiast, often brings home magazines about cars—which came in handy while Walker was potty-training. "My husband would sit Walker on the potty and they'd look through the magazines together, waiting for Walker to pee," Lynley said. "So they'd try to find cars in the magazines that our friends drove. They'd find a Saturn say "This is what mommy drives!" and they'd look for Saab "This is what daddy drives!" Before we knew it, he was pointing all our various cars out on the road."

Walker can't read yet, but loves leafing thru Car and Driver Magazine. "So now he knows every car you can imagine, including some super fancy cars that you never see on the road," such as Aston Martins and Lamborghinis. He can identify any car he spots on the road. "It's so cute and quite hilarious to see such a little guy who can hardly speak naming every car he sees!" Check out Walker's car-naming skills in action in this adorable video.

Gwen writes in: Pretty Lucky was abandoned on the highway Sunday night in a cat carrier and spent the whole night out in a terrible rain and wind storm with no protection from the weather. It was late Monday afternoon before a kind hearted man stopped to rescue her from the highway. He then brought her to me and when I opened the carrier to let her out ,water was pouring off her everywhere and the bottom of her cage was full of water. She was so cold. I dried as fast as I could while another got her some warm food. We were worried she would become sick because of what she went through. Pretty Lucky is adjusting to her new surrounding here with us and is loving all the attention she is getting.

Stephanie tells me her kitty, Priscilla, is responding well to her meds and she stopped loosing weight and muscle tone.

I wish I had the stats for the number of cats and dogs speutered yesterday !!! More and more hoomans tell me about doing TNR work and spreading the word. I'm Speutered and Proud of it !!!

And the number rescued by all of you wonderful Hoomans !!! Stand up and give yourself a pat on the back for being a life saver!!! YOU are the ones making the changes on this planet!!!

Bob Wallace has a field trip out from school visiting today !!!!!

E-leaf-ant hedge is a cut above

A green-fingered homeowner took on the mammoth tusk of turning his hedge into a herd of elephants. Creative Gavin Hogg has been amazing passers-by with his jumbo creations. He spent hours sculpting the eye-catching spectacle near his home in Becon, South Wales. And now the unique topiary, featuring seven adults and three baby nellies, has been transformed into an unlikely tourist attraction.

Gavin, 49, said: "I found a picture of a group of elephants and set about shaping the hedge - it took me about two days. The ears and trunks were a but tricky but I am pleased with the end result." Gavin and wife Vina fell in love with elephants after a safari holiday to Kenya. The couple even sponsored a baby elephant through an African wildlife charity. But now they can see their own herd every time they gaze out of the window of their Grade 1-listed mansion in the Welsh countryside. Dad-of-two Gavin said: "They will need a haircut twice a year just to smarten them up. "But they will be a permanent feature here and anyone is welcome to see them."

Tree Willy !!!

It looks like something fishy is going on in this Kent surburb. The amazing hedge, in Whitstable, has been shaped into a smiling Moby Dick-like sea creature by homeowner Nicki Leggett. It took three years of pruning to perfect but it looks like Nicki had a whale of a time.

A great joke: from Robert

One day a cat dies and goes to Heaven. God meets him at the gate and says, "You've been a good cat all of these years. Anything you desire is yours, all you have to do is ask. "

The cats says, " Well, I lived all my life with a poor family on a farm and had to sleep in small closed corners with hardwood floors. Whenever I wanted to sleep in a comfortable place like the sofa, they would always shoo me to the floor."

God says, 'Say no more. " And instantly, a fluffy comfortable sofa appears.

A few days later, many mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to Heaven. God meets them at the gate with the same offer that He made the cat.

The mice said, "All our lives we've had to run. We've been chased by cats, dogs and even women with brooms. If we could only get around without having to use our feet, we wouldn't have sore feet anymore."

God says, " Say no more. " And instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates.

About a week later, God decides to check and see how the cat is doing. The cat is sound asleep on his sofa . God gently wakes him and asks,

'How are you doing? Are you happy here?'

The cat yawns and stretches and says... " I've never been happier in my life! I sleep all I like, and this sofa is so comfortable and big I can stretch and sleep however I like! "

God smiles, and then the cat continues, " Oh! And by the way - those Meals on Wheels you've been sending over are the best! "

Corporate McDonald's official term "heavy users" is. Is there a double meaning there?

Randy writes in: I heard a sermon years ago where the priest encouraged us to do one quiet, thankless act a day - one you didn’t tell anyone about, one you didn’t overly celebrate - just an act you performed quietly, humbly.

This isn’t as easy as one would think. Most of us want notice for the ways in which we contribute. We want to pat ourselves on the back for our act. None of this is bad per se, but there is a higher spiritual place one can attain by keeping the act to ourselves and being quiet, even to ourselves, about it.

What kind of acts? It could be something as seemingly small as a smile to someone who needs it, cleaning up a park or beach nearby, petting a lonely dog, playing with a child, calling a loved one you haven’t spoken to in a while. Or perhaps its time to look into some volunteer services in your area. (Many of us want to volunteer but something always gets in the way, doesn’t it?)

It’s been much cooler today than the last few days and sounds like it’s gonna get down right chilly tonight !!!! That’s gonna feel good huh??? Have a fabulous day!!!

Love,
Vincent

A Concert just for Dogs…how Fun!
Leave it to Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson to think out of the box with this one! Former Velvet Underground frontman, Lou Reed, and his wife, performance artist Laurie Anderson, are curating a music and arts festival called Vivid Live at Australia’s Sydney Opera House this month—and one of their events promises to be a barking good time.

On June 5th at 10 AM, four-legged visitors will be welcomed to the Opera House Forecourt (along with their human companions) for the first event of its kind in the world: a concert only for dogs. Laurie Anderson has created a performance piece consisting of tones so high that we humans won’t be able to hear them, but our canine friends are sure to enjoy the sound. “Our canine friends will be treated to a glorious cacophony of sound, while all we will hear is the lapping of the water on the harbor,” says the Vivid Live website.

Actually, we’ve got a feeling that the human audience members may well be treated to the sound of a few hundred dogs barking in unison—but maybe that’s just part of the music, too.

Justin, a Special Young Man
Last summer Justin did some volunteer work, then went away to his first year of college. He stopped in occasionally during breaks. He came back two weeks ago and having grown taller and cut his hair we didn’t immediately recognize him and asked him if he was here for a job interview. He told her who he was and said he was ready to get to work and would be available until returning to college in August.

Lena was thrilled. Even though it was only temporary help, he was trained, nice and a good worker. And he went to work on a 5 day a week schedule. He’s always here before the shift starts at 8 am and he works straight thru till 5 pm. When he filled out tax paper work he was a bit surprised and said oh I need to do this? I’ve never had to do it before. We just figured it was his first paying job and .....

Well yesterday he left without coming to the office for his first paycheck. This morning Lena gave it to him and he said, “What’s this for?” He’s very happily surprised that he’s been hired but he thought he was volunteering !!! My first thought was, “Oh my gosh we could have saved that money!! But we need the help and the reliable help of a staffer. And his performance is outstanding. And you know what? I bet his paychecks will go to a very good use, something that will make a difference in the world!!!

Vincent

Jane shares a funny!!
One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside
cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap.

Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up,
and begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent.

Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, ' Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.'

'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' says the
woman.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden.

'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.'

'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL: Never argue with a woman who reads. It's likely she can also think.

Candis wrote a poem for me!!!
Vincent is a most special cat

If ever a cat won our hearts
It was Vincent from the very start
We will travel to see him one day
Until then, we love him in every way.

American boy, 13, breaks Everest record
A 13-year-old American became the youngest climber to ever summit Mount Everest on Saturday. Jordan Romero's journey was tracked through GPS coordinates on his blog, logging his team's ascent up Everest, which is 29,028 feet (8,847 meters) above sea level.

"Their dreams have now come true," a statement on Jordan's blog said. "Everyone sounded unbelievably happy." Before Saturday, the youngest climber to scale Everest was 16-year-old Temba Tsheri of Nepal.

Before starting out, Romero, of Big Bear, California, said he wanted to climb Everest to inspire more young people to get outdoors. "Obese children are the future of America, the way things are going," he said on April 9 in Kathmandu. "I am hoping to change that by doing what I do: climbing and motivational speaking." With a smile, he added: "I am doing this a little for myself, too, to do something big."

Switzerland Hires “Road Angel” to Prevent Speeding Accidents

In Fribourg, Switzerland, drivers going too fast will get a warning from a real-life angel, thanks to a new campaign.

There are few drivers who can honestly say they’ve never driven above the speed limit. Maybe you’re late for work, or rushing to pick your daughter up from day care, or you’re just distracted. But when you go too fast, accidents are far more likely to happen—and Switzerland’s come up with a novel campaign to remind speeders of the dangers of driving too fast.

In the Swiss state of Fribourg, drivers going above the limit may receive a warning from a real-life angel: a man dressed in white, complete with a set of wings, who waves at drivers who are going too fast. Drivers will likely recognize him as a real-life counterpart to an angel in a safe-driving TV commercial, who is hit by a car pulling out of a garage too quickly. The angel has been hired by the state police department to work 20 hours a week until at least October.

True, the police department could focus their resources on pulling over speeding drivers, but they believe the angel creates a greater impact that they can make on their own. “To have a physical presence like that makes the message more visible, and it’s out of the ordinary,” police spokesman Benoît Dumas told AOL News.

It’s too early to tell if the angel is actually preventing accidents on the dangerous mountain roads, but he’s definitely got people talking. And if the plan goes well, there’s no telling how long the Road Angel may keep guard on Fribourg’s roads.

“After all, you know, angels are eternal,” said Dumas.
