Hi everybody!!!
Sun is shining outside today.
Someday soon the power company promises that the sun will shine inside too !!!!
Yikes, you'd think you saved money not having electricity wouldn't you? But NO WAY !!! It be dog gone expensive !!!! It's cost just a bit over $1,000 that we've had to spend in gasoline for the generator, emergency parts (had to pay more Saturday from the only place we could find open) to hook the well pump to the generator, emergency water before the generator was running, laundramat coins - yikes you seen what a load costs these days? Maybe we get 6 more machines and run laundry for YOU !!!
Mom was behind on the bills anyway this summer and now this !!! Oh yikes - BUT the good news is NOBODY got hurt. Some of my trees did and we're very sad about that. But now they can be at Rainbow Bridge with dad!! But all the cats and dogs and cows and all are FINE. A bit melted, but fine.
Yesterday we got lots of extension cords and more fans and that's helping in the whole 9th Life Center --- gee I'm told by guys who's older than me that till just a few years ago there was no cooling machines at all at Rikki's !!!! Now the whole 9th Life Center has one. Well not now, but we used to and we will again when the electricity comes back. And here's something I'm a bit worried about ....... we have an electric bill due to the power company on July 5th for $543.31 ---- mom's really hoping they'll turn the power on even it it's not paid .... there don't be no more green stuff for them ... it had to go to water and gas for the generator and those kind of emergency things .....
So Vincent is here to help us raise that $543.31 so we can get it paid before the 5th ....... we really appreciate our power now and don't want to ever ever complain about the cost of it again --- who'd a knowed -- but it's a whole lot cheaper to use it off the wires than to make it in the generator and we really LOVE our lectricity !!!!! DO you love lectricity? Clap your paws with me !!!!!
Love, Opie
(ps if you'd like to buy us a coffee cup full of electricity this morning this is where you can do it!!! And to those of you who've been helping with the expenses this crazy weekend - thank you and I love you - so many of you have been so kind. http://rikkisrefuge.org/donate.php)
Yesterday evening we thought we were gonna be lucky!!! We saw the electric company trucks!!! They came yesterday, must have followed the signs saying "Job Site" up to the new trailers, instead of following the electrical wires up to the transformer and down wires. Looked at the trailers, said I see no down lines (cuz I see no lines) so no problem and left. Tried chasing them out the dirveway but by the time you run after them a bit yelling, and then turn around and run back to the parking lot, get a vehicle, chase the cats off the top, and out from underneath and realize you've left the door open and have to chase them out of the car and then out from under the car again .... the electric company beat us out to 20 and were gone. Paws crossed they come back again ......
More love to YOU !!!! Opie
PS to Coco Christian Maow thanks you for paying his bill. Don't know why they couldn't find his name when you called at the doc to help him. His name officially Chairman Mao but mom's always called him Maow and that's how she put his name in when he got his surgery. He's doing great and is gonna put his pic up soon as we get more good internet service!!! Thank you lots !!!

Good Morning Good News, July 2, 2012
Welcome to July !!!
Wow I learned a new word "derecho" -
that's what happened Friday night!!! Scary and messy but
gosh we were so lucky!!! It's a nuisance and made lots of work and has cost
lots of money --- thank you thank you thank you all of you who are foregoing a
cup of coffee, a bag of groceries, or something to help us out, I love you
muchly, you know I've been having troubles with other bills and just not quite
the green stuff to trade for them and now this, poo on Derecho!!! ----
But I be so thankful we all be ok. Such bad and terrible
things could have happened but they really be little when you look at what
happened in other places. Our trees landed on the ground, small limbs and
leaves all over, but no serious damage, and I can drive around and see smushed
houses and sumushed cars, and I hear even some people and pets got smushed ---
so I thankful it really be so little here.
You know, we could have lost the new office trailers. They'd
just finished setting them on the foundation piers. Just Friday morning they'd
come back and installed the tie downs. The guy said it's so darn hot to be
working the guys like this but this is great weather for a bad thunderstorm and
you'd sure hate to see one go over. Thank goodness. Can you imagine after all
it's taken to finally get them ...... and they be gone before we ever get
inside !!!! Of course this will delay the electricity getting hooked up - which
is the next phase -- but you know something? That be ok, that be just fine!!!
And you know what else I be thankful for? I thankful for all
of you who been helping us. You who's been contributing $s where you can, those
who brought out bottled water for us and gatoraide for the hoomans before we
got the well pump converted to work on the generator, those who came to help
clear debris. And you know what else? I'm so terribly terribly thankful for my
staff who came to help us. They had to clear debris from their own homes, stop
and clear things off the roads, take detours, and they came to take care of us.
And in that hot hot humid weather, they made sure we all had water, even the
cows way way way down in the field, where they had to clear more trees and
branches to get to their water tub. A great big thanks to Valerie, Wayne, Doug,
Philip, Heather, Shannon and Sean who all made it in on Saturday - bright and
early to help us and to make sure we were safe.
Wayne spent several hours with the afternoon sun beating on
his back working, hanging over the side of the pump house reaching down in, to
rewire the pump so it could run off the generator.
WOW ...... I gotz me wonderful hoomans who help me !!!! And
I LOVE YOU each and every one of you !!!!! You're what makes it possible to
have the Republic of Rikki's where the animals are allowed to live!!! Those of
us that nobody else wants and so many think shouldn't even be allowed to live
cuz we're missing a part. My feet, Duke's eyes. We thank you - cuz we love our
life just as much as you love yours !!!! I don't even miss my feet!! Never had
'em, don't need 'em, me and Timmy can still play and lick each other and purr
and be very happy!!!!
OH OH OH OH Really cute story. At the electric store when
grandma and me went to get the supplies to hook up the well pump to the
generator, there was a young man, maybe 10 or 12, kind of hard to tell on
hoomans how old they be, it's always such big numbers, and he looked at mom's
shirt and said, "You work at Rikki's?" and she said, "Yes, have
you ever come to visit?" and he said, "Yeah, and you know who's my
favorite of all? Leaper!! I love Leaper!! Do you know his story? He got a bad
tattoo and it damaged his leg, but he's a real cool cat!"
You can watch Leaper leap and make you smile !!
YES YES YES
--- well is running FINE now --- got it running on the
generator. So we're fine on water. Have enough gatoraide for the staff for a
bit !!! Thank you all very much. If you're coming out we need gas. BUT before
coming out be sure YOU have enough gas to travel and to get home. We've got
people coming and getting stuck cuz it's getting hard to buy gas. Places have
no electricity, can't pump. And of the two that have had electricity in town,
one ran out of gas yesterday.
I'm hearing from people coming down from the northern
virginia area that they can't find gas anywhere along the way. I don't wanna be
a mean kitty cat, but with it getting harder to get and me needing to run that
generator, I can't give anymore away - not at any price !!!! I sorry !!!! If
you do have a full tank and can get in with more and can find a can to even put
it in - I'm hearing that's all sold out - we can still use gas. About 20
gallons a day for the generator it looks like.
LAUNDRY is a disaster --- thankfully we don't need much for
warmth right now -- the laundry mat by tractor supply in orange, same shopping
center as pizza hut and near Co-Op is open 24/7 --- if you can come and take
laundry --- please help --- if you don't have a truck or something bring BIG
plastic bags to put it in. It's like way icky. Some of us poo our beds. That's
why we live here, cuz Rikki's loves us anyway. Quilts, dog and cat beds, cage
pads, towels -- lots of icky things needing washing. This is gonna be one more
of those extra expenses, it gets real expensive to do laundry at the mat !!!!
Thanks for your donations everybody - you're keeping us
going and giving us hope that some day the lightbulbs will shine again !!!!
Oh and just a little bit of sad news ..... The tour on July 4th is cancelled. Wez got catching up to do from the storm and
cleaning up and it still be very hot.
The aminals get stressed when it gets hot and they need to be clam and
just lay around in the shade. Only da
hoomans can be out working hard !!!!
And dats cuz a you got them the gatorade!!!!
It be very bad too if the visitors pass out from the heat
!!!! When da ambulance comes to take
them away it makes lots of noise and scares the aminals !!!! So maybe tour next time!!! Boo, I gonna miss seeing my friends
.... ok well I go lay in shade now.
I hope you and yours did fine during the storm.
I love you,
Opie

Did you know I have an Uncle Alfred? Well I did. It's sad I
think. I never knowed him. His barrister sent me an email today telling me that
my great uncle Alfred of the same sirname - I think that means Cat, that's like
last part of name hooman use, right? - died. I guess he was trying to reach out
to his long lost relatives - I not be lost but I guess he was lost? - to share

keep up the search. And now they've found me !!!! And they want to give me the

extra Fancy Feast appetizer if I worked quick.
So I need your help. I'm looking at a check and there are
all kinds of numbers on it. Which ones do you think this nice barrister man

WORST email of the day --- "We've been trying to make a
substantial donation to animal shelters and everyone is turning us down. They
"claim" to be full and don't want our donations. We have 4 large dogs
and 3 cats we are hoping to donate to an agency. If you do not want this
donation, please put us in touch with organizations that are taking
donations." ........I'm serious .........
BEST email of the day -- "Thank you so much for
offering to take my cat, KEE KEE into Rikki's Refuge. I am so glad I had the
time to read up on Feline (FIV). My vet had me very worried for a short period
of time. Kee Kee will remain with me and I will take the best care possible for
him. I am providing a small monthly donation to your organization for having a
open heart to take him in I wish other organizations were like yours. God Bless
your staff."
YES YES Yes, LUCKY KITTY AND WONDERFUL HOOMAN --- WOULD LOVE
WAY MORE MESSAGES LIKE THIS ONE !!!!!!
Another great email was from Mike Wood, one o our volunteer
acquisitions coordinator. He works
mostly with Purina, but he’ll help with anything!!!! He wrote to tell me Purina is going to make a
"little" donation on Thursday ..... cat litter, it's scoopable clay,
and it will last us almost 10 months.
YIPPEE, we were within a few weeks of running out!!!! So this be really good news!!!!
Can you guess how much - in pounds - cat litter this is and
what kind of vehicle(s) will be needed to deliver?
AND Monday was the Take delivery of our 4,749 pounds of the
Worlds Best Cat Litter, which YOU won for Rikki’s by voting in a contest !!!!!!
The driver called and said HOLY COW that's not a drive way,
that's a hole in the forest and I'm NOT coming down that!!! So he went and
parked at the Harley dealer and I said fine, we'll come out to meet you. 10
minutes away.
He said WTF what are YOU going to drive I have almost FIVE
THOUSAND POUNDS of stuff for you - do you have any idea how much this is, how are
you going to unload it, what are you going to put it in, how long is this gonna
take??
I said TRUST ME !!! It's ONLY 5,000 pounds, we're used to
handling a LOT more product !!!!
I took the big van, with the transmission problem but that
doesn't matter for hauling!!! It's a cargo sized van with one non removable
seat that makes a bed in the back. And Blue Dog the pick up that has a cap on
it. 8 foot bed, ordinary truck.
The guy's standing there with two tall pallets (the height
of two "normal" ones stacked together) and another 1/2 pallet and
says you're going to put THIS in THERE? And how long is THIS going to take?
Out jumped Valerie, Doug, Billy, Heather and Phil (and me)
and they went to town !!!! That first half pallet was off his truck before he could
even bring the next one forward. Even with shuffling vehicles, being rained on,
and with an itty bitty room to spare, we were all loaded up and rolling out in
just under 13 minutes after arriving on the Harley lot !!!!
The driver said, I've never seen anything like this !!!!!
You want to help Rikki’s? We’ll sure do everything we can to
make it as easy as possible !!!!
Next time you’re at Rikki’s give the staff a little thank
you. A card saying thanks for all your
hard work for the animals, a gift card for gas, a plate of cookies!!! They are really dedicated hard working
people and do so much above and beyond their duties for their animal charges!!!
Woooo Hoooo I got mentioned in the paper twice today ---
well Rikki's did --- THANK you everyone who shared the cow story -- a lovely
gentleman who's driven rescue horses will be giving them a ride !!!!!! We
couldn't save the animals without your help!!
Big thank you to Cathy Dyson of the Freelance Star for your
help too!!

Shared by Lauren Gordon: Saw a blurb in the Examiner that

Amy Griffin writes in ---- Opie - Guess what? I found a kitten last night! He was stuck in a hole in the stump of a huge tree in the woods in front of my house! Somehow I heard him crying & found him & Kenny was able to get him out of the hole. He's about 5 weeks I think. He's not sure how to eat or do anything on his own, but he's got the teeth. He's all gray with blue eyes. His name will be Gibbs (he's a character on the tv show NCIS). Will post a picture as soon as I get a good one of him!"

9:28 am -- Good morning!!!! It be sunny. The ducks not be so
happy today. But I be happier. I need that ground to dry up so the litter
trucks can get in tomorrow !!! Dry ground Dry !!!!! You help me blow on it to
make it dry. It be bad when big tractor trailer get stuck. Real bad!!!! Vincent
said the message in this picture is a real good one, and it's something I must
help keeping every body to learn. It's real important. WWVD = be kind to
everyone, no matter how many legs they have or how long their ears are. Yup,
that's what my dad says!!! Who can you be kind to today? Can you think of just
one little thing that will really make somebody's day??? Drop your sandwich so
a goat can eat it. Adopt a shelter pet? Foster somebody for a rescue? Donate
the price of a cup of coffee to the animals? That'd make me real happy!!!
http://rikkisrefuge.org/donate.php
So the plate is full today. Tippy the doggie already had to
go to hospital. She be peeing blood. She been having lots of bladder troubles
for couple months now. Seems like everything works for a little and then stops
working. She be old and grandma be real worried about her.
Michelin, the b/w kitty who Valerie saved after she got hit
by car. The kitty, not Valerie. She's been in the hospital at the doc's very
sick since Monday. She's looking good and should come home to our hospital
today. She does have a pelvic break, and other problems inside that had to of
been there before the accident. Her abdominal organs were enlarged and that's
what was making her look pregnant. Ultra sound and xrays don't look so good in
there. But pretty sure it's not from the accident. She must have been sick
before. Paws crossed we can get her all well.
We have lots of stuff to pick up at Pharmacy today. Gotta
take a truck. All the fluids for the kidney kitties and syringes for everybody.
Even the ones with the great big needles for the horses and cows and goats and
all !!! Yikes, those be scary !!!!
Grandpa needs a ride to the grocery store and drug store.
And late this afternoon the man who'll be putting up the office trailers is
coming out to survey the sight. So it's getting closer and closer to happening
!!!! Paws crossed. Yikes, grandma says Opie, you gonna have an office in the
new trailers? Well you better do da fundraising to get them going!!! Oh no ....
Why's it all up to me???
Beauty sure ain't doing a good job of paying for her
surgery. She just keeps eating doors and things in the house and costing more
money. Bad dawgie. She says she won't help pay her bill till she's out of
confinement. Not fair - bad dog! http://rikkisrefuge.chipin.com/beautys-knee-surgery
Ok well I go be playing with Timmy in the sun now!!! Seez
you later!!! Love, Opie
10:52 pm -- Oh what a day !!!!! We’re pooped !!!! All dis supervising of dem hoomans is tiring work !!!! I needs to cat nap but wanted to say hi to you first. Today was good, not so good and total poo.
The sun shined all day and the field where the tractor
trailers need to go looks like it should be dry enough for tomorrow. Yippie ---
we be getting 75,000 pounds of kitty litter all for us to poo in !!! So that be
good.
My buddy friend an really nice dawggie Tippy has a terrible
tumors in her bladder, it’s really big and it’s really bad. She’s pretty old
too. The doc put her on medicine for 30 days to see if it will shrink and if it
will they hope they can do surgery and make it better. Paws crossed please.
Michelin, the b/w kitty who Valerie saved after she got hit
by car, came home from the hospital today. Her injuries from the accident
aren’t too bad and she’s doing well from them and that should be ok. The real
problem is something was really wrong before the accident. Kidneys, liver,
spleen, blood count - it’s all messed up. Doc don’t think she’s gonna make it,
but thinks we can manage it as well at home now as they can in the hospital and
here she’ll get that magic called love.
She got home to the refuge just in time for Valerie, our cat
whisperer, to take her home. I was so worried when about ½ an hour later
Valerie called -- I was thinking oh no ..... But Valerie sounded all happy and
said I just sent you a video!!! Just as soon as Michelin saw her cozy bed and
her food bowl she started purring and gobbling down the nums. Here she is !!!!
Love really does wonders. Paws crossed for Michelin to heal from everything
that’s wrong with her.
Lena took the truck to the pharmacy and picked up all the
fluids for the kidney kitties and syringes for everybody. It really filled the
back of the truck !!!!
We took GreatGrandPa shopping. He needed nums and medicines
and things. He took me and Timmy shopping on Sunday, so this time we taked him
!!!!
AND there’s a thrift store right near the grocery store and
we gotted something we’ve been looking for, for a long long time. It be the
Paws for Prayers Cabinet. It’s a cabined with a glass front. GrandMa has a
statue of a cat praying, she’s sort of praying over a basket and GrandMa writes
her prayers on a piece of paper and puts them in the basket. She calls it her
Paws for Prayers Kitty. But she can’t keep the kitty sitting out in the office
cuz sometimes us kitties get wild and we knock things over and they get broke.
So now we have the purrfect cabinet to put it in!!! Isn’t that nice?? And it
only be $5.99!!!
This afternoon the nice man who’s gonna put the office
trailers on foundations came out to work out some of the details. He and mom
went over where they were going to be and stuff. He should start work on Friday
!!!! Yeahhhh .... Do you think someday we’ll really be able to use them?????
And so does that sound like a busy day???? Well I started
writing to you about an hour ago when GreatGrandPa hollered that he needed
help. Oh Yikes, he was sitting in a chair in his room with a big stream of
blood running down his leg, and a big puddle on the floor. He bumped his leg on
the corner of the bed and it made just a little hole. His skin is fragile and
he’s on blood thinners and oh my gosh -- it was a ½ roll of paper towels to
clean up after putting pressure on it for the longest time to make it stop and
then bandaging. So now GreatGrandPa is nighty and starting to purr.
We think we better go nighty too. Yaaaawwwwwnnnnnn
Love, Opie and Timmy
Thursday
June 14, 2012 FINALLY TODAY !!!!!!
And so the sun has come out for another day !!!! That's
pretty cool huh? Da sun comes every day. Even if it's kind of cloudy, there be
some sun out there ... every day !!!! That so nice.
Today we have big delivery. Purina has donated 75,000 pounds
of kitty litter !!!! Yippee !!!! I be so excited !!!! It's reject litter from
the factory, but hey, that's ok, some bad hoomans say I reject kitty cuz I got
no hind feet !!! And really, what we gonna do with the litter no how? Like poo
in it?? So who cares if it's the wrong kind in the container, wrong smell, like
orange smell in lime boxes -- if you can poo in it then it's good !!!! Right?
The first load should arrive about 11 am and it's a big 18
wheeler coming. Then they gotta unhitch the trailer and go get the second load.
They get back about 3 or 4 pm then. Everybody real glad we be renting the
trailers for a bit so they don't gotta unload all that today !!! That make all
dem hoomans tired just thinking about unloading 75,000 pounds in one day !!!!
That's the biggest excitement on the schedule today.
Everything else looks quiet ....... paws crossed .....
Love, Opie and Timmy
Stay tuned for more important insights from Opie !!!!!
LOTS
OF
LOVE

My first
Christmas card
Hi, my name is Timmy and I’m Opie’s brofur.
Thank you Opie !!!!
Thank you for telling everybody about my birthday
tomorrow. I be so excited. It’s the first ever birthday I ever
have.
You all is getting to know my brofur Opie better than me.
Nobody ever hurt Opie so he's not so scared of things. I got
hurted real bad, almost a year ago, when I was just an itty bitty baby, about 4
weeks old only.
Velcro and me, my very first friend ever,
he helped me exercise my legs in physical therapy class.
he helped me exercise my legs in physical therapy class.
I was riding in a car and something happened and the next
thing I knew, I was flying. Just like a bird, flying, right out the window of
that car. But my wings not be so good and so I went BANG on the hard road. It
really hurt. And it was real scary.
Big tires whizzing by and I couldn't move. I tried but my
legs no work and I lay there just hurting. Then somebody stopped and said oh
you poor baby and they picked me up and taked me to a doctor.
The nice doctor looked at me and said Uh Oh this no look so
good, but we try and save this poor baby. I was all cut up and bleeding and
hurting. Doc give me medicine so I don't hurt so bad and clean up the blood
even tooked pictures of my bones. They be ok, none of them broken, but it
injured in my spine and I can't move my legs. It be bad and I be scared.
Daddy Vincent and me, we Support Our Troops !!!
After a bit the pain went away and the fur grew back over
the cuts and scrapes, and I got to move my legs a bit, but they don't move like
other kitties' legs and so I scoot, cuz i can't stand up for but a couple
minutes and I can't walk very fast at all.
Nice hooman Ken Lickliter, who is on da board at Rikki's, he
works at da hospital I was in, and he said OH I HAVE GOOD IDEA !!!!! I bet
Vincent could teach Timmy how to get along and then maybe Timmy can help teach
peoples to be nice to kitties and other aminals and even to each other !!!! And
so Ken brought me to Rikki's.
It was scary. There be lots of sounds. Now I know they be
chickens talking and roosters showing off and Mr. Peacock yelling for attention
and nice doggies barking who's now my friends. But when I first gotted there I
be real scared all them noisy aminals they just wanted to eat me or something.
But Vincent was nice and he protected me. He held me and he snuggled me and he
washed my face. And soon I got not scared if I could just lay by my new Daddy.
When Daddy Vincent would go outside to the day room,
sometimes I'd go out too. It was real scary at first. I worry those big tires
come again and I get hurt more. But there are no tires allowed in the Day Room
so it be good. In the beginning I'd hide in a kitty house. But soon I started
to come out. And then I made friends. I have lots of kitty friends now. And I
even have a hen friend. Henny Penny and me be real good friends !!!! I love my
Henny Penny. It's fun to know amnials of different kinds !!!
Yippee. My very own very first birthday!! I be big boy, no?
You think I can drive new toyota ??? How old kitteh have to be for license? I
don't want aminal control arresting me for driving without a license. You wanna
send me birthday money so greatgrandpa can take me shopping tomorrow to get
nums and fun things?
I so excited. I never getted to go to the Fancy Feast store
before. Daddy Vincent he go all the time. Opie he gotted to go sometimes too.
But me never. I been scared to ride in cars. But I getting braver. I'm learning
that you don't fall out of cars all the time and you can be safe when you're in
your car seat. Sometimes I don't like having to be in a car seat, but it's
better than falling out the window. And I know nobody from Rikki's would throw
me out a window and hurt me. I don't know why my other hoomans did that to me.
Maybe they didn't mean to hurt me?
Tomorrow Great Grandpa is taking me and Opie shopping at the Fancy Feast num store so we can buy delicious nums and maybe a feather toy and maybe some catnip -- I be one year old - that be old enough for cat nip, no? Greatgrandpa he say, now my little Timmy, you get all your birthday money together and we go shopping, I make sure you get the bestest deal and you get the mostest nums for your birthday money.
I be so excited. Happy birthday to ME !!!! If you like to
give me birthday moneys you can do it here http://rikkisrefuge.org/donate.php or you can pick a pressie off my wish list
here http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/35G483LXNF05A/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_ws_HQ-0pb1Y9T5YD
and if you like to just say
happy birthday, that be ok too.
I love you !!!

With the tough economy winnings from contests have become an
essential component to our success.
With out the funds and the supplies we cannot operate Rikki’s Refuge and
we could not care for the 1300 critters of 22 species who call this home. We very much appreciate your help in voting
in contests.

about it !!!
News
around the Refuge
It’s been a busy year.
It seems hard to believe it’s almost over. Seems like it just began.
Then when I look back at all the news WOW we’ve done a lot !
We are thankful to be stable in this economy and only
occasionally wish there was far more funding for many more buildings so we
could care for many more animals.
As usual, we make do on a shoestring, and always seem to
manage one way or another. Thank
goodness we have such ingenious volunteers!!!
Office Trailers Approved
Remember last summer when two office trailers were donated
by a kind and generous church? We
thought it would be a simple matter to get a building permit and set them
up. We were quick to learn
otherwise! It would require a Special
Use Permit and that required studies and meetings and public hearings.
By March we had received the go ahead from seven county
departments who had to approve the use of the trailers. In April the Planning Commission voted
unanimously to approve the trailers.
Though it wasn’t without opposition.
Neighbors who poach and who we’re now having an issue with a portion of
OUR land they’ve cleared and fenced for their use, came out and spoke against
us. And then spent a lot of time trying
to rile up anti-animal hatred around town.
The only other opponent was the lady who’d wanted to bulldoze the mile
and a half meandering path thru our woods and wet lands to get to her property
to log it. WOW, was she ever
rude!!! Screaming and yelling at the
Planning Commission.
Several wonderful people came out to speak in our
favor. Business owners we work with,
volunteers, even Animal Control ! Such
kind words were spoken about how hard we work for the animals, what difficult
work it actually is, physically and emotionally, and how everything we’ve ever
spent money on has been for the animals, and the animals alone. And these office trailers would give us the
opportunity to have more space for the humans as well. The staff and the volunteers. Indoor space for meetings. Data entry
without dozens of animals on your keyboard. A place to store the file cabinets
with the growing mounds of animal health records, that isn’t in the way in the
halls of the 9th Life Center.
Even a place to sit down and have lunch with out too many
critters trying to knock you flat and steal it. If you try to eat inside, you have cats and dogs jumping on your
shoulders and reaching down for a bite, pawing at you and begging with soulful
eyes. Try to eat outside and who only
knows what will take your food!!
I learned the hard way that goats like peanut butter. I’ve learned a lot the hard way! I gave up trying to eat inside once and paws
kept swatting off hunks of my sandwich.
NO, the cats did not want to eat my peanut butter sandwich. They just wanted to see what I had and take
it away! So I went outside, despite the
light freezing rain. With my hood up I
didn’t see Sammy coming. WHAM ! I sure felt those hooves hit me on the
shoulders and BAM! I hit the ground
face down. Before I knew what the
pressing weight on my back was, Sammy the goat nuzzled me for a second before
the sandwich was ripped out my hand and all I got was a few crumbs that fell on
me as he stood on my back eating my sandwich!
In May the Board of Supervisors listened to 30 something
volunteers talk about Rikki’s Refuge and the work they do to help the animals,
the county, the people, and how wide spread we have become. And they voted unanimously to approve the
trailers. They talked about the letters
and emails they’d received in support of Rikki’s. From all over the world!
You can read about the trials, see the aerial pictures of
the refuge, and lots of other information in older entries in this blog. Just scroll back to see all that you’ve
missed. Cuz, I’m sorry, it’s been a
long time since I wrote to you.
Vincent D. Cat
Click Vincent on the photo above to see the photos of his
fun fun fun 14th Birthday Party.
Can you count how many species attended his party?
Sadly, our beloved Spokes Cat Vincent, passed away just
after his 14th Birthday Party.
We are still mourning his loss as his adopted sons, Opie and Timmy
learn to take over the job of running the refuge.
Opie (left) is almost ten months old and a very outgoing
well adjusted little guy. He was born
without hind feet. His legs just stop
at the ankle. It doesn’t slow him down
much !!!
Timmy (right) will be one year old on Sunday!!! This sweet and shy baby “fell” out the
window of a moving vehicle when he was only 4 weeks old. He survived, but suffered permanent damage
to his hind legs. Though he can stand
up and take a few steps, his hind legs are so wobbly and clumsy, that he
usually prefers to scoot. Around the
ranch he’s happy and always playing with Opie and his other friends. Traveling out for educational programs is
still a little scary for him. Maybe he
remembers that fateful car ride.
Our Differently-abled Team, Vincent, Duke, Opie and Timmy,
went out to promote a contest giving away handicap vehicles.
The human is GW Plumb, who your votes got him to the finals
to win a handicap ready van. We’re
waiting to hear if he’ll be one of the three winners. It’s up to the company running the contest to pick the three
neediest. Paws crossed!!
That’s Opie on his shoulder and Timmy on his lap to the
right. This was Opie’s and Timmy’s
first off site photo shoot and they did wonderful. Timmy was a little shy and reserved. Opie was as outgoing as his adoptive daddy, Vincent.
Of course that’s Vincent on GW’s lap and Duke to the right. Our proud team, traveling to teach that
being Differently-Abled doesn’t mean you’re Disabled !!!!

Rabbit Rotunda I Renovations
Wonderful, wonderful brand new and fabulous Rabbit Rotunda
II opened to residents last summer.
It’s so beautiful that it really made Rabbit Rotunda I look shabby!
Rabbit Rotunda I has now been vacated of residents and has
just started undergoing major renovations.
The residents are living in Rabbit Rotunda II for now and are very
happy.

Tiara Retires to Rikki’s
Tiara, 34 years old, has retired to Rikki’s Refuge. A star ... well at least a roll ... in Gods
and Generals and many other movies and once an award winning Trotter, Tiara has
now earned the right live a gentle life.
She’s very gentle. Meet her at
the 4th of July Tour !!!

Search “tour” on Rikki’s Refuge’s YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/rikkisrefuge
to see what else you’ll see !!!!
Tours have been on hold while we upgraded “the
facilities”. Thanks to Larry, we now
have a handicap accessible porta potty on site, and it has a hand wash station
too !!!!
So come out for the Noon 4th of July Tour and
potty in comfort!!! Gates will open at
11:30 am and close at 12:15 pm so please be prompt! We’ve had so much publicity lately and so many people wanting to
come out and play with the animals that we must keep the gate locked when no
one is watching it. We have to watch
out for the animal’s safety and the visitor’s safety - too many folks will pat
or corner an animal with out asking first, and they all have fangs, claws,
hooves or horns!
Tours run about two hours and it’s all outdoors. We do not have any buildings open to the
public. Dress for the weather, bring
sunscreen and water. A hat’s not a bad
idea.
There is ONLY ONE TOUR - so please be prompt - Tour starts
at Noon and gates will be relocked right away!!!
Remember NO NO NO
dangly or shiny jewelry - the emus will take it,
and may get a part of your ear too !
no sandals or open toe shoes - hooves
really hurt if you don’t have on good sturdy shoes !
no bare legs, shorts, or short dresses - pig
bristles will scratch when they rub against you and claws will hurt when
kitties or doggies paw at you
This is better than a wild safari !!!!!

Bob is Back !!!
Bob meet
his new great-grandson, Opie
After many years of sailing the seas, Bob Hilliard is back
at Rikki’s Refuge!! It’s going to take
days, weeks to catch up on all the changes and meet all the new residents !!!
Baby had no home
This poor little baby, his mom and siblings were left to die
in a shelter. Yet another unwanted
litter. One by one the other kittens
died. One of our volunteers wanted to
adopt mom, and asked if mom and baby could live at Rikki’s until they’re ready
for adoption.
And so this baby and him beautiful longhair black and white
mom are now here with us. Baby has some
vision and some neurological problems that we are evaluating. We’re hoping he’ll grow out of some of his
issues.
When we fully understand his needs and he’s older, he’ll be
available for adoption. If no one wants
the poor little guy cuz of his problems, he’ll live with us at Rikki’s Refuge.
The unwanted, the unloved, the differently-abled - we’re
here to love them and give them a chance at life.
Old and Blind
with
nobody to love them ...... until they
came to Rikki’s Refuge.
Now living in the 9th Life Center and two of the
several doggies that go home every night with Lena, our dog whisperer.
It’s so sad.
Everyone ages. It’s a normal
part of life. Should we lose the love
of our families and no longer be wanted and cherished? At Rikki’s Refuge we sure don’t think
so!! We think retirement years are a
special time and no matter your species, you deserve special care and love.
It’s thanks to your kind and generous donations that we’re
able to give love and happiness to almost 1,300 animals of 22 species. No matter what it is that makes them
“different”, we love them all.
It takes Tons and Tons
of food and other supplies to care for all the animals. Read here all about all the supplies we go
thru !!!! It’s really quite
stunning! http://rikkisrefuge.blogspot.com/2012/06/every-year-we-need.html
If you can help us out even a little bit, we’d very much
appreciate it!! Just click to feed a
cat or dog or pig or goat today !!
