Oh Yippee Yippee, I'm a bear on a pic-a-nick ALL DAY today !!!! I get to
eat unlimited nums. And so do you! At our Open House today from noon-4
pm veggie cook out and nums! Just for you. Entertainment. Especially
like meeting ME !!!! Keep voting, we gotta get Number ONE back!! We
can't let them cockers win again, they already beat me twice!! HELP save
me from the cockers!!!

love everybody. This is my friend Black Jack, he's a cocker spaniel who
spent his life as a breeder till he was old and blind and not wanted

Dennis a volunteer and outstanding teacher, who does a lot of work with
intellectually challenged high school age kids, including bringing them
to Riikki's once a week on a volunteer program that not only helps the
animals but also helps them learn job skills and responsibilities,
writes in: if anyone has access or friends who work at a school, the
computer labs have computers. Ours have about 30.

Stop in and visit, vote and get all the kids and faculty excited about
voting too!

Here's two really good news about feluk kitties!

This is an email mommey got yesterday about Jon the feluker in NY --
Thank you so much, Kerry, for your willingness to take Jon. We were
having difficulty finding a foster until we could get him to you.
However, at the last minute, a home on Long Island was found for him. He
is lucky to be alive and I will pick him up tomorrow and deliver him to
his new mommy. --- this is a lucky cat day !!!! Volunteer at NY shelter

And here's one I got from my friend Elsie.

Hi Vincent! Mommy gotted real good news! Remember that you said she
good bring little Johnny to come live with you guys? He's the little boy
she rescued from that awful tree and he ended up bein' positive for
feline leukemia. Well...the people that had been fosterin' him said
there's no way in the world they could give him ups! They wants to keep
him forevers and evers! Ain't that wonnerfuls!? But...mommy would still
like to come to your open house tomorrow. Is that okays? And, she wanted
me to ask you...what kinds of stuff can she bring that you guys might
need? Is there a particular kind of foods or supplies or cleanin' stuff?
She's gonna make a run to Petsmart and Walmart tomorrow before she comes
to visit and wants to make sure she gits you stuff you can use. Tomorrow
is my little brother Joey's 1st birthday...we is gonna celebrate by
bringin' Rikki's some stuff!!! Love you, Vincent!

And Jean sent even more good news!
Hi, Vincent. Here's my good news. I won a radio station contest on
Saturday and won 4 tickets to see the movie "Cats and Dogs: Revenge of
Kitty Galore". I used my pawsitive thinking to win that contest and
emailed my daily reminder to 40 friends to vote for Rikki's and for them
to use their pawsitive thinking to get Rikki's to win the Shelter
Challenge. I'd like you to star in the next Cats and Dogs movie,
Vincent. You'd have the most fans. Love from your biggest NJ fan, mean

And guess what!! She WON the NATIONALS! And now she's Ms. East Coast
USA !!! Congratulations to a lovely lady who's not only pretty on the
outside but stunning on the inside as she uses her fame to spread the
word about helping animals! I'm so proud that Autumn-Skye is my friend!

So I've been doing lots of happy dancing !!!!! I love saving lives.
And I love seeing my friends happy! All my friends are winners and the
bestest friends in the whole wide world.

I've failed. I feel soo bad. I've failed to keep the lead in Virginia.
Those cocker spaniel's got ahead of me again. They seem to do this on
weekend. I guess my mind goes somewhere else and I don't remind you to
vote and wham ... I'm a looser.

I also feel like I failed my bestest black friends yesterday. it was
Black Cat day and didn't get my paws on a puter all day. Mom had the
cash from the Bake Sale (yippee Katarina) in her office so she locked
the door and locked ME out when she went to the vet.

Then she comes rushing back in and grabs the puter - MY purter - and
runs off for an appointment with the accountant. Bad lady. She never
done bringed it back all day !!! That's not very nice and it left me
with nothing to do but sniff catnip and roll in the grass and eat Fancy
Feast.

So it's really all the hooman's fault !!!

Happy Dance, YOU may have a puter to blame it on! I've for a HOOMAN to
blame it on!!!!

Mom had to go over papers at the accountants and sign things. When she
put the date 8/13 on things the accountant said, oh Bad Luck Day, you
can sign yesterday or tomorrow's day if you prefer. Mom said NO WAY!!!
Friday the 13th is Lucky Black Cat Day and Black Cats are GOOD
luck!!!! When she came home, Shadow jumped up on her and rubbed her face!

Ken shares a voting secret: One Saturday Gina and I were at a mall that
had an Apple store. I don't know if you have ever been in one of these
(no, I haven't Ken, some kind if discrimination) but they let you go in
and play on all the stuff they are trying to sell you. Gina and I went
to every computer, laptop, ipad and iphone. We were able to vote once
from each machine. We got in around 35 votes in an hour. Tell folks
going to malls this weekend, while you don't have to hit ALL of them, if
you are in a mall with one of these stores I am sure it wouldn't take
too long to do 10 or so. If ten people do that bam...100 votes. That
should help. Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Hmmm Ken's on to something. Wonder if I can hook up the goat cart
tonight and go break into a puter store!!! You don't think they'd miss
just one, just one little one, if I took it home too do you?

Don't forget tomorrow Sunday August 15th Noon - 4 pm
Open house - come on out, meet me, feed me, pat me and let me snuggle
you and purr in your ear. While you're waiting in line to meet me you
can visit the other animals, take a tour, be entertained by the Greg
Allen band. And Larry will be cooking wonderful (if you don't care for
mice) stuff. Remember - the most important part of all - admission is
two cans of cat food per person. Or be really nice and bring two cases!!!

I am an animal rescuer.
I will never bring about world peace. I will not save the rain forest.
I'm not a brain surgeon, and I'll never transplant an organ to save a life.
I don't have the ear of a powerful politician or world power.
I can't end world hunger.
I'm not a celebrity, and God knows I'm not glamorous!
I'm not looked up to by millions around the world. Very few people even
recognize my name.
I'll never win the Nobel Prize.
I'll never end global warming.
There are a lot of things that I'll never do or become.
But today I placed a dog!
It was a small, scared, bundle of flesh and bones that was dropped off
in a shelter by unfeeling people who didn't care what happened to it but
yet who were responsible for it even having existence in the first place.
I found it a home.
It now has contentment and an abundance of love. A warm place to sleep
and plenty to eat.
A child has a warm fuzzy new friend who will give them unquestioning
devotion and teach them about responsibility and love.
A wife and mother has a new spirit to nurture and care for. A husband
and father has a companion to sit at his feet at the end of a hard day
of work and help him relax and enjoy life. And a sense of security that,
when he is gone all day at work, there is a protector and a guardian in
his home to keep watch over his family.
No, I'm not a rocket scientist but today I saved one of God's precious
creatures.
Today, I made a difference!
I Am An Animal Rescuer.
My job is to assist God's creatures. I was born with the need to fulfill
their needs.
I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection. I have
bought dog food with my last dime. I have patted a mangy head with a
bare hand. I have hugged someone vicious and afraid. I have fallen in
love a thousand times, and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body.
I have Animal Friends and friends who have Animal Friends.
I don't often use the word "pet." I notice those lost at the road side,
and my heart aches.
I will hand raise a field mouse and make friends with a vulture. I know
of no creature unworthy of my time.
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven, but I believe
there are!
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?
We may be master of the animals, but the animals have mastered themselves:
Something people still haven't learned.
War and abuse make me hurt for the world, but a rescue that makes the
news gives me hope for humankind.
We are a quiet but determined army and making a difference every day.
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan. Nothing more
rewarding than saving a life. No higher recognition than watching them
thrive. There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who, only days
ago, was too weak to eat.
I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done. My home is never quiet. My wallet is always
empty, but my heart is always full.

Big thank you to the volunteers who helped at the car wash in Culpeper
on Sunday! Cindy, Grace, Toni, Kimberlie, Erin, Micalia, Brie, Victor,
Andy, and Katarina all took turns waving down cars and scrubbing them up
for Rikki's. They made over $100 to help feed that animals. Good job
everyone!

Shout out to the Teens C.A.R.E Program. They have come out every
Thursday this summer and have worked worked worked! Thank you for all
the work you do!! And it's been HOT HOT HOT but they keep right on
going!!!

And thank you Katarina for leading the Teens C.A.R.E. Program and being
right there working with them!!

Bev shares some Good News: As I was tending to the animals this morning
prior to getting ready for work I spotted a deer. Well, actually, the
dogs spotted the deer. I see quite a few deer in my area and on our
family property, but this one was different. As the dos and I looked in
the direction of the deer, the deer stood there looking at us. Such a
beautiful animal. I wish I had a picture to attach, but couldn't get to
the camera. I'll call her a "she". She was approximately 20-30 feet
from me eating leaves from a tree. She gradually moved to the grape
vines, stood still, looked at me for a few seconds... I said "you can
eat my grapes"... she turned back and started eating from the vine. She
looked back at me a few times while feasting from the grapevine. She
looked at me once more and trotted off happily towards the woods. The
dogs were so quiet after I stood still and told the deer she could eat
the grapes. They stayed quiet for awhile after our unexpected visitor
left. Such a nice way to start a day. Guess we all were happy she
stopped by. By the way, I don't know if she ate the grapes or the
leaves or both. Whatever she feasted on made her happy.

Good Morning Good News !!!!

Oh I'm sorry, I'm late today!! I've been watching my milty blanket go
round and round!! Mary brought us a new washing machine this morning
and mommey said my bed HAD to get washed! Thank you Mary! I don't mind
the feet prints and fur but mommey does!

Thank you Cindy for taking all the laundry to the mat this weekend so
the hospital folks got clean hammocks and all the other doggies and
kitties got nice clean things!!

Candy came to play with me this morning!!! And brought a whole truck
full of donations from Maryland SPCA. They're friends of ours and we
help each other out. She also brought things for the yard sale. Did
you know they're having a big yard sale here on Sunday along with the
Open House.

I'm a bear and I'm going on a pick a nick! Wow I am hungry! It is way
past lunch time isn't it? MOM?? MOM?? Where's my LUNCH?

Mommey and Mary have been going over all the things that happened while
mommey was gone! Mommey says Mary did a really god job taking care of
the office. She says Lena did a really good job taking care of us.
Mommey says nobody needs her anymore! But I need Mommey, so she's gonna
have to stay!

I'll get a picture tomorrow of the wonderful mural Rene painted on the
new quarantine building - it's really cool and mommey really likes it!
Rene's paintings makes it look so nice and happy and cheery here!! And
she's a good carpenter too!

You DO have Sunday on your calendar for the Open House and 12th Birthday
Party and Yard Sale and all kinds of fun and excitement, don't you?
It's noon - 4 pm. Please be here! I want to nuzzle your ear!

Mary Anne shares: This is wonderful. I have some "terrific" news of my
own; my little terrier, that I adopted from the Orange County Shelter 17
years ago is doing fine - YES, I said 17 years ago. I was working at
Mary Washington College (called at that time) and I "raced" to the
shelter, before they closed, to pick him up. He had been brought in the
night before (fortunately had only one night to spend there). He
continues to be a blessing to us and to be a mentor to our other dog,
Winston, and our four inside cats. We also have feral kitties. Thank
you for the work that you do!!

Good Morning Good News !!!!

We are running nose to nose in the Shelter Challenge with a cocker
spaniel rescue. We're still in the lead today - gotta keep up the
voting - only 13 days to go.

Can you imagine? One breed, one species! How could they even be
close?? And here we are all breeds, all species. NO discrimination at
Rikki's! Never!!!

AND NOW ... A DEFECTOR HAS CROSSED THE LINES AND JOINED OUR SIDE!!!
Black Jack is a 13-year-old male cocker spaniel. When he was turned into
the pound he was not neutered (he is now). The lady who turned him in
owned a pet shop and you know what his job was. Bad hooman. He is deaf
AND blind and no good for making puppies any more. However, he's gets
around foster mom Kathy's house quite well. He loves to eat. And he's
even housebroken, unlike his girlfriend who came with him, a
13-year-old King Charles Cavelier Spaniel who's also blind and who's
pottying in the house. But after all they've been thru, Kathy will
continue to love them and give them a home forever and ever no matter
what!!!

So now voting for Rikki's is voting to save Black Jack the Cocker
Spaniel too !!!

BIRTHDAY BASH AND OPEN HOUSE - SUNDAY August 15, noon to 4 pm
Fun and food and tours and best of all, come play with me!!!! I'll be
there greeting everybody !!!! I give good ear kisses, nuzzles and
purrzzzz. The gates will open at 11:30 and the first tour will take off
at 12:30. Tours all day, fun, games, kidz corner, entertainment, so

IS IT HEAVEN?
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the
scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He
remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for
years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of
the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it
was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was
standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked
like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like
pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a
man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out,
'Excuse me, where are we?' 'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked. 'Of course,
sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.' The
man gestured, and the gate began to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing
toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveller asked. 'I'm sorry, sir,
but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and
continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long
walk, and at the top of anoth er long hill, he came to a dirt road
leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside,
leaning against a tree and reading a book....

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?' 'Yeah,
sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend
here?' the traveller gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by
the pump,' said the man. They went through the gate, and sure enough,
there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The
traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he
gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back
toward the man who was standing by the tree.

'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked. 'This is Heaven,'
he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said. 'The man
down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with
the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'

'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No,
we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their
best friends behind.'

We are running nose to nose in the Shelter Challenge with a cocker
spaniel rescue. They even got ahead of us for a few days. Can you
imagine? One breed, one species! How could they?? And here we are all
breeds, all species. NO discrimination at Rikki's! Never!!!

AND NOW ... A DEFECTOR HAS CROSSED THE LINES AND JOINED OUR SIDE!!!
Black Jack is a 13-year-old male cocker spaniel. When he was turned into
the pound he was not neutered (he is now). The lady who turned him in
owned a pet shop and you know what his job was. Bad hooman. He is deaf
AND blind and no good for making puppies any more. However, he's gets
around foster mom Kathy's house quite well. He loves to eat. And he's
even housebroken, unlike his girlfriend who came with him, a
13-year-old King Charles Cavelier Spaniel who's also blind and who's
pottying in the house. But after all they've been trhu, Kathy will
continue to love them and give them a home forever and ever!!!

I'VE GOT SOME OTHER UPCOMING FUN!!
Rainbow, my friend who once "worked" in a puppy mill before getting
rescued has a great new show called Rainbow's Rescue Romp. Rainbow's
back was badly injured from laying in a cage and giving birth over and
over and over until she was rescued. Now she works educating people
about puppy mills, differently abled animals, and adoption.

AND she's invited me to be on her show on WOW !!!! This is a really
exciting day !!!!! Rainbow has invited me to be on his show on August
26th !!!!! Get signed up now and you can watch Rainbow's show last

LENA'S FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY
Was a lot of fun. She was very excited by all the presents and praise!

On July 16th was a fabulous success! Thank you to Donna Edwards who was
the Chairperson and organized the event and all the fun of the day.
Thank you to Tom Sabol who did a fabulous job rounding up most of the
players. Thank you to Deloris Quick who coordinated all the volunteers
for the day. Thank you to Candy Erhard who begged for door prizes and
goodies and coordinated other volunteers working on prizes. And a great
big huge thank you to all the volunteers who cam out and helped, before
and during the event!

August 20th 'Spay A Stray, Fix A Feral' spay/neuter clinic at the Animal

Mom's home and she's not got eated by no sharks !!!! Iz so gladz. They
sailed and sailed and sailed all night and all day and all night and all
day! They went diving and playing with the fishes! I'm glad mommey is
all safe from sharkeys now!

this year. Not many sharks. But lots of turtles. What a cool relaxed

Have you been dreaming of that nice new washing machine you saw? But
you just can't bring yourself to getting rid of the one you have cuz
it's still working? I mean wasting something is wrong, right? If you

My kitty bed is dirty. All our kitty beds are dirty. Do you think this

on our beds!!!! But Lena is upset cuz our washing machine quit working.
And I don't like to see Lena upset.

Subject: An Old German Shepherd
One day an old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long,
discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading
rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old German Shepherd thinks, 'Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!'
Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down
to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the
panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, 'Boy,
that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around
here?'

Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look
of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!' says
the panther, 'That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!'

Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a
nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it
for protection from the panther. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and
strikes a deal for himself with the panther.

The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here,
squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that
conniving canine!

Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel
on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?', but instead of
running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he
hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the
old German Shepherd says... 'Where's that squirrel? I sent him off
an hour ago to bring me another panther!

Moral of this story ... Don't mess with the old dogs... Age and skill
will always overcome youth and treachery! BS and brilliance only
come with age and experience.

I have the happiest news of all !!!! Mom's boat is back and she's not
got eated by no sharks !!!! Iz so gladz. They sailed and sailed and
sailed all night and all day and all night and all day! I'm glad mommey
is all safe from sharkeys!

This is my favorite picture mommey took. She saw lots of sea turtles
this year. Not many sharks. But lots of turtles. What a cool relaxed

Hello Everyone,

As I was tending to the animals this morning prior to getting ready for work I spotted a deer. Well, actually, the dogs spotted the deer. I see quite a few deer in my area and on our family property, but this one was different. As the dogs and I looked in the direction of the deer, the deer stood there looking at us. Such a beautiful animal. I wish I had a picture to attach, but couldn't get to the camera. I'll call her a "she". She was approximately 20-30 feet from me eating leaves from a tree. She gradually moved to the grape vines, stood still, looked at me for a few seconds... I said "you can eat my grapes"... she turned back and started eating from the vine. She looked back at me a few times while feasting from the grapevine. She looked at me once more and trotted off happily towards the woods. The dogs were so quiet after I stood still and told the deer she could eat the grapes. They stayed quiet for awhile after our unexpected visitor left. Such a nice way to start a day. Guess we all were happy she stopped by. By the way, I don't know if she ate the grapes or the leaves or both. Whatever she feasted on made her happy.

Earlier this spring at our Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable, Mass., we were once again witness to Mother Nature's instinctual and nurturing ways firsthand.
In April, an adult fox and his kit were brought to the center with severe sarcoptic mange that caused the animals intense suffering. Our wildlife experts set to work, and within a few weeks, both foxes made a complete recovery.
It just happened that while those two were undergoing treatment and getting better, two young healthy, orphaned foxes were admitted to the center. Our staff has the expertise and dedication to raise orphaned animals so they can be released into the wild when ready. But to have an adult of the same species to guide them is the best.
And luckily for everyone, that's exactly what happened. The orphans and the adult and his kit quickly became a family unit, with dad taking all three pups under his protective paw. Within days of bonding, the four foxes were safely released together back into the wild, where they're running free again. Take a look»

From Research Dog to Beloved Therapy Animal

Joey had a difficult start in life. His first 13 months were spent as a "practice dog". He accepted his fate unflinchingly, and became known in the lab for his friendly, laid-back temperament.Then something incredible happened. Britt Mactavish, a student on
campus at the time, heard about Joey and made arrangements to adopt
him!

Joey had never been loved. He didn't know what treats were, was
terrified of stairs and hadn't been housebroken. But Britt knew
he was special. In an amazing show of dedication and patience, she
spent the next six months using positive reinforcement to train Joey
and teach him how to trust people.

Today, Joey is thoroughly enjoying his new life. Not only has he fully
recovered from his past, but he and Britt are making a difference in
their community as one of American Humane's animal-assisted
therapy teams.

This dynamic duo regularly visits schools, where children read to Joey
to improve their literacy skills. Joey is beloved by everyone who
meets him. Britt reports that the adorable beagle happily lies down
among the kids and basks in their attention, teaching humane values
while they practice reading.

He also has an uncanny sense for when a child's attention is
waning. He somehow knows when to get up and engage those who lose
focus. With one look from Joey, their attention quickly returns to
reading, listening and learning.

What a happy ending for a great dog!

Good Morning Good News !!!!

She'll be bringing the grandkids back to live with her for a few years.
Her son is going on a sailing trip around the world!!!! Her Dad and
Brother are already in Thailand getting the boat ready. Soon they will
set sail for great adventures.

They want mom to go, but she won't go away and leave us for that long.

She is gonna do some diving with James before she comes home though.
They're going out on a boat today. Sounds scary to me. Sharks are really
big and they have really big teeth. Mom says the only time she stops
worrying about me and all the kitties and doggies and rabbits and
birdies and everybody in the world is 200 ft 500 psi and 34 sharks. I
don't know what all that means but it sure sounds scary to me!

More sharks are eaten by people every year than people eaten by sharks.
My mommey never eats nobody so you don't think they'll eat her do you?
Pray for my mommey to come home safe and not eaten. Even if she is
taking MY puter on the boat.

Some of my nice friends have said I can use theirs when they come to
visit. Hope they visit me a lot !!!

I think I'd really love the ocean if it didn't have all that water in
it. Then it's just be sand and fish !!!! Yum yum scratch scratch .....

Rene tells me her sister found out she doesn't have chromosome defects,
which means she has a better chance of being cured of the brain tumor.
They still won't call it cancer, but have her doing chemo pills &
radiation for another 5 weeks. At least it's good news. Thanks for the
prayers!

The nice produce stand on rt 3 in Fredericksburg, VA, USA is giving is
their left over produce again this summer. Please contact Jane
janew@infionline.net if you can help with pick ups. As much as we'd
like to see her every day, she just can't do it every day, she's got
kitties to take care of too !!!! I think their schedule is very
flexible and we leave totes there - so you just pick it up and it's nice
and clean and can go in a car for the trip to Rikki's Piggies !!!!

Jean shares her embarrassing pet story with us. I was having a women
only wedding shower at my house. Towards the end of the shower my
husband came in with our 2 year old dog, 70 pound, husky mix, Eddie.
Eddie was so excited to see everyone and wanted to give them kisses.
Terry was the maid-of-honor and she is also has a pet sitting business
and all dogs love her. Terry was wearing a type of low cut peasant
blouse. Eddie jumped up on her to kiss her and his paws pulled down her
top to reveal she wasn't wearing a bra. My husband was the only male
there and he then told her he trained Eddie to do that.

Leah sent me this note: Hiya Vincent! If one of your hoomans is up in
Culpeper ask if they could stop by Mama Mai's. I have a jar for you all
but I am working 6 days a week 12 hrs a day so I can't get down there. I
am certain there is at least $100 in there probably more.
