Tom Sabol, the Chairman of our upcoming Golf Tournament, liked the idea of the Memorial Photo Signs. A lot of you liked that idea too. He was wondering how to place them about the golf course. Then he came up with the idea of a Memorial Garden where they'd all be together. It's up to you in Memory of and in Honor of Photo Signs for your loved ones, two legged or four and, yes, of course, those special three leggeds.
If you're coming to the event you may take your photo sign home with you. If not, they'll move to Rikki's Memorial Garden in the center of Feline Fields. By the way, it's about time Candy and Paul will be looking for extra plants and people to help plant and tend the Memorial Garden. If you can't make the Golf Tournament - and all the fun and excitement we have planned that day for our non-golfing friends - you can claim your photo Signs at Sponsor Appreciation Day.
Buy Your Memorial Photo Sign Now Before Time Runs Out. The event is less than two weeks away and the sign makers need some time .... Memorial Photo Signs are available for a donation of only $125. They are lovely color 12 x 18 display signs. Send a photo and your wording electronically (e-mail, too late for post). Let your friends on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge know you're thinking of them. After the event, this Memorial Photo Sign is yours to take home and display forever. YOUR sign may say anything you like (hopefully our editing won't be necessary!)

April 14 has been set aside as a day to play. Whether you're an avid golfer, an amateur player or if you're like me and Putt Putt is the closest you've ever come, the day has been designed for fun.

Nanny Goat, the Almost as Famous as Vincent, Spokes Goat will be there to meet you and beg treats and eat the golf course. She says bar-b-que - who needs extras when there are miles of acres of lush green grass.... Nanny has been very sick the last several days. When Candy was visiting her mom, one of her mom's quilting friends came over to show off some of her latest quilts. You should have seen the look of disappointment on his face when he woke up Christmas morning to discover Santa had brought him his very own car! Young and Old
The young and the old share space in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center. Two year old Lilly often comes to work with her grandma, Lena. She's not allowed to help dispense meds to the folks in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center, so she spends her time sketching portraits. Hazel, one of our oldest residents, has become her best friend and loves to watch over her shoulder.
Meet Jan Chetnik
Jan wears many hats at Rikki's Refuge. As our Public Relations Director and the Team Leader of the Jan Kerri Jean PR Machine she heads up the advertising about our Open Houses, Tours and other events and has been majorly instrumental in enlarging the spotlight on Rikki's Refuge. After all, if you've never heard of Rikki's, you won't be helping us to support the animals.
As our Educational Director she administers the Kind News program, reaching out to classrooms across the nation and the world. Raising the funds to send subscriptions to Kind News, an outstanding monthly Humane Education Magazine. It's only $35 a year to sponsor a classroom. Have a favorite teacher or just want to help a classroom of Jan's choice? Make your $35 donation for education and you can sponsor a whole class room of kids for a full year. We can only make a difference one child at a time. Teach a little kindness to a young one and they have a lifetime to spread it around.
As our Director of Prayers and Goodwill and Warm 'n' Fuzzy Things she keeps the miracles happening and things flowing smoothly at the Refuge. If you don't believe in prayer - just ask Jan to pray for you!!! Let me tell you - it works every time! Thank you Jan !!! At Rikki's Refuge we no longer just believe in miracles - we have come to rely on them.
Jan is also the one you'll meet on a Tour of the Refuge or at an Open House. These events are held once a month and Jan, our Tour Director, is the one who puts them together and pulls them off beautifully. She's that tall dark gorgeous brunette in the Rikki's T and Cap just brimming with excitement to introduce you to all the wonderful critters at Rikki's. Don't miss her next tour January 27th at 1 pm.

There will be 4 Open Houses during 2008. Each time we will be open for four hours with tours leaving every half hour. Participants will gather at the Gift Shoppe and the tour will leave promptly at 1 pm. The gates will open at 12:30. Please be on time as we cannot accommodate late arrivals.
On a tour you can meet the Cows of Bovine Boulevard, the Goats of Capri Corners, the Guinea Pigs of Cavy Castle, the Chickens of Chicken City, the Chukars of Chukar Chalet, the Dogs of Doggy Downs, the Donkeys of Donkey Dale, the Ducks of Ducky Digs, the Emus of Emu Estates, the Cats of Feline Fields, the Cats, Dogs and Rabbits of the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center, the Geese of Goosey Gardens, the Guinea Fowl of Guinea Fowl Grounds, the Horses of Horsey Haven, the Mules of Jackass Junction, the Peacocks of Peacock Prowls, the Pheasants of Pheasant Phacility, the Pigeons of Pigeon Palace, the Pigs of Piggy Paradise, the Rabbits of Rabbit Rotunda, the Roosters of Rooster Rounds, the Sheep of Ramsey Residence, the Turkeys of Turkey Terrace and who ever else is staying with us at the time.
You will get to interact with the friendly cats and dogs, feed the pigs (bring apples) and sheep and goats and rabbits (bring carrots) and learn the story of why Rikki's is here and where we are going. You will see what day-to-day life is like at the refuge and you will also be invited to join in our volunteer efforts to build new housing for new animals.
Tours run about two hours and you should wear waterproof shoes, old clothes, long pants, sun lotion, hats, etc; dress for the weather as it's all outdoors and you will get wet, muddy and slobbered on! Warning - lots of prickles and hooves so sandals and shorts aren't recommended. Visit our Gift Shoppe for Official Rikki’s Wear and all kinds of wonderful unique crafts. Bring your camera, you'll get great shots of the excited animals thrilled by your attention.
Admission Donation is one can of cat or dog food per person (please be as generous as most folks and bring a case). We’re sorry, but we must ask that you leave your pets at home, our mascots aren't used to visiting animals and we don’t want a tangle. Children must be supervised by their parent or guardian (no more than 4 under the age of 10 per adult). Remember: animals have built in weaponry (horns, hooves, fangs, claws) which they can and will use, sometimes without warning, so enter at your own risk. Parent or guardian must sign for minors.

Can You Read This Face?
Cute? Think he'll purr for you? If you guessed wrong, you'd be bleeding right about now. This is one furious feral cat. About to be captured for his second "processing". He didn't enjoy the first and doesn't intend to submit to the second. When Lena tells her patients, "This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you", she's for real. A lot more human blood is lost in our hospital than critter blood !!!!
Cat Processing 101
All animals are processed thru a minimum of a two week quarantine when they come to Rikki's. We cannot risk any of our residents catching something from "the outside world". Our residents are our first concern. When a new resident joins us they go into quarantine. In the case of cats, it's usually two weeks, unless there are "issues". Like persistent worms, a bad case of ear mites, they get sick during their two weeks or they need additional veterinarian work like neutering or spaying or a current rabies vaccination or a dental.
We have an extensive parasite prevention program because we simply cannot afford to have all of our animals infected by parasites brought in by one animal. An otherwise healthy and "ready to go" cat receives two preventative parasite treatments as well as a physical and any needed vaccinations. They are treated for fleas and ticks, ear mites, mange mites, a whole host of possible internal parasites and given vaccinations. The typical cat will have his or her ears cleaned and mite prevention dripped in. They will receive a capsule of worming meds and 2 cc of liquid worming meds. They get an injection for mites and other parasites and one for distemper and those other nasty things. Then they get flea drops. If they didn't come with a current rabies certificate or it's due to expire soon, they also get a trip to the vet to update that. A full exam includes various body orifices being poked and prodded, otoscope in ears, thermometers in unpleasant places, eyes examined, mouth pried and held open so teeth can be examined - visually we hope but all too often with the ferals we get to feel first hand how well those teeth are working - stethoscope pressed against chest and abdomen, nails clipped - often after being extracted from human flesh.
And two weeks later it's all repeated. And if all looks well at that time they get to move into their new cat house. We have 8 temporary pens for cat quarantine that can hold up to six cats each. Some will have to be quarantined in cages in our hospital. When a family comes in together we prefer to keep them together in a temp pen than in individual cages. it's much more homey and much less scary. Lots of kitties who've come to Rikki's in the last 8 months thank Ron for the temp pens.

Going Home
After their scary adventure they are loaded up to go back home. Unfortunately these guys just finished their second processing but are still having some ear problems. They'll have to wait another two weeks to see if they can pass the test next time.

Tis the Season for Love
This is the time of year that we try to set aside our differences and extend love to all our earth mates. No matter how many legs we have, or how long our ears are, we are all here to share this planet in a peaceful and loving way. Everyone of us has redeeming factors, and a few issues that somebody else might think are less than perfect. But it all comes down to one bottom line.
We want to be loved. We want to be respected. We want to be cared about. We want a safe place to sleep. We want food to nourish our body. We want love to nourish our soul. Sometimes it's hard to remember that every one of us deserves this basic right.
Spend a little bit of extra time this season reaching out to help someone. Someone who's down on their luck, has lost their home, doesn't know where their next meal is coming from, or has suddenly lost their whole family.
It doesn't matter if they have two legs, three legs, or four legs, or even no legs. Skin or scales. Fur or feathers. Stripes or splotches. Just reach out and help someone.
And every time you do, it makes your soul grow, it makes you a happier person, and it makes your life more worthwhile. It's amazing what a day of service to those less fortunate than you can do for you. More than any gift anyone else could give you.

Meet Vincent, Spokes Cat for the Physically Challenged
Vincent is one of the happiest little boys you'll ever meet. Nothing seems to ever get him down. Many years ago a serious accident claimed one leg, severely injured a second, claimed a portion of his tail, left him incontinent and seriously handicapped for life. He could've chosen to spend the rest of his life down in the dumps, bemoaning his losses.
But instead, he chose to lead a life of service, helping others to see they can always find a sunny day, if they just take the time to look. He especially enjoys meeting classrooms of able-bodied children, and teaching them, that he's no different, he can be their friend, and play right along side them, if they will just help him out a little bit. He also spends a lot of time counseling those who are feeling down. Thankfully, someone intervened, and he came to Rikki's Refuge. Loving, trusting, the sweetest, most gentle personality you will ever meet, Duke has joined our program to help others appreciate the handicapped. He loves to go on walks, and keeps his head close to your knee to know which direction to turn. Blindness wasn't the only challenge handed out to Duke, he also has a bleeding disorder and must be very careful how hard he plays, and a seizure disorder which requires homeopathic medication twice a day.
Duke Thomas Peabody has a seeing eye dog. His name is Boomer. Though Boomer is a young dog, a friendly dog, and has no mental or physical problems, he will remain a resident at Rikki's, because it would be a terrible injustice to separate the two.

Meet Little Rob, Spoke Pig for the Grocery Challenge
A little over a year ago, a poor little, underfed, baby piglet joined Rikki's Refuge. Big Rob was one of those special humans who loved to help out at Rikki's Refuge. This little baby piglet took a special liking to Big Rob, and before you knew it they were sharing pizzas. They only shared a few months together at Rikki's Refuge, when Big Rob, much too soon, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The poor little baby piglet soon was christened, "Little Rob", in honor of his two legged friend.
Little Rob's goal in life is to prove that nothing in a grocery store is inedible, one can ever be too large, one's belly can never be too close to the ground, what's one more chin, and that, yes, pigs can keep growing to fit their enclosure. We hope Little Rob is a bit misguided in some of his beliefs.

Nanny Goat has spent many long years at Rikki's Refuge. She says they feel even longer, since she is fed a woefully inadequate diet. She continues to insist, that if I will allow her to use my computer to do some Internet research, she can prove to me that Oreo cookies are the best diet for goats. I took her up on her challenge once, but hooves are very hard on keyboards, and I haven't let her touch the new one. I have also seen the amazingly disgusting mess the day after she has eaten a bag of Oreos.

Meet Peepers, Spokes Emu for the Holiday Dinner Challenged
So many of her cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and even her mom met their fate at a Thanksgiving or Christmas feast that she turns in horror and runs at the thought of the holidays. Even though she's been safe here at Rikki's since she was ten days old, she still can't trust human kind around the holidays.
She wants to remind you that Tofurkey is an excellent choice this time of year. And that like you, her kind only want peace, love and the ability to live out their natural lives with their friends.

In Memory of Kelly, Rikki's Animal #12
Kelly came to Rikki's Refuge December 1, 1998, the 12th animal to join our family. She was a very sweet and gentle little girl. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge on July 25, 2001 from medical complications. She had been the Spokes Cat of Cat House Number One, adorable and charming, and never complaining about all the medical treatment she needed - including daily baths.
Nicole, Animal Number 3,000 Arrives at Rikki's Refuge
She's a cute little thing. At first glance, you would assume she is a highly adoptable, lovely little house kitty. But as you get to know her, you learn about her medical problems. Cats without tails are often called Manx cats. Manx are a specific breed, that not only has no tail, but has a depression where the tail should be. The last vertebrae is missing. Your spinal cord runs through your vertebrae, and connects to nerves all over your body. When nerves are damaged, or nonexistent, you lose sensation and or the use of parts of the body. Because of this abnormal body structure, Manx cats, are very prone to nerve problems near the end of the spine. Without grossing you out with too much medical detail, this is the area that controls one's bowels and one's bladder. Deformities in this area leads to issues such as incontinence, inability to go potty by oneself, and constant leakage.

2,988 Animals Later
Gilda & Steve needed our help again with little Nicole. An adorable little silver tabby with a little tuff of a tail, and more energy than one can usually packed in one cat.
She's a live wire, literally climbs the walls, bounces off the other cats, and is a real joy to play with.

Ceiling Fans Were New for Nicole
and she desperately wanted to leap onto the blades for a ride. She tried from every angle. Leaping into the air, and plopping down on some poor old thing asleep in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center. Not many of the old folks are very fond of Nicole. But Alley Cat, Jacqueline, Bumble, Little Charlie, Joey and Vincent are having a blast with their new playmate.
Finally, Nicole Got Her Ride
and discovered it wasn't as much fun as she thought it was going to be. Fortunately, there was a ledge high up on the wall, where she could rest, until the dizziness wore off.
Nicole and the other 2,999 animals that you have saved thru Rikki's Refuge over the last 9 years thank you from the bottom of their hearts. Without you, everyone of them, would have lost their lives. You have made so much possible, for so many animals. It's something you should really be proud of yourself for. Not only have 3,000 domestic and farm animals called Rikki's Refuge home over the last nine years, 1,200 of them sleep here every night, are fed here every day, and are loved here every minute. Hundreds of others have been referred to new forever homes, have been able to stay in their own home because of the assistance we could offer, or have been moved to other organizations who were able to help them. Thousands of wildlife have found new, safe and protected homes in our woods and our wetlands. And this has been the best gift you could ever give. Life, home, warmth, security, food, love, medication. Thank you, all of you, for saving the little Nicoles of the world.

Precious, This Poor Ancient Poodle
joined us from a pound, where she had been left by her beloved owners, to be euthanized. Alone, scared, blind, unloved, very matted, and terribly thin, she patiently awaited her fate. When her time was up, she got to come to Rikki's Refuge. Clipping, washing, medicating, loving, and holding is what she needed. Soon she began to pick up weight. She is on five medications for her heart every day. Drops for her eyes, to keep them comfortable, even though she's blind. Medication to help heal her gums until she is strong enough to undergo dental surgery. Medication to keep her digestion working. And several little tins of special Little Caesar's dog food.
Precious Bundles up to Go Home for the Night
Lena, our Chief Medical Officer & Sanctuary Manager, takes home so many dogs at night, that she recently had to buy a larger SUV. Now if these aren't spoiled dogs !!!!!!
Precious may not be with us for long. Maybe a month, maybe two, maybe six. But we think she has the right to be happy, comfortable, and loved every possible day she can. This is at Rikki's Retreat - NOT the Refuge. Less than 15 miles from Rikki's Refuge.

Guided Refuge Tours are every half hour from 11:30 A.M.-2:30 P.M. Tours run about 1 1/2 hours. Dress for the weather as it's all outdoors and wear "outdoor" shoes.
Pet, feed, and love the critters ranging from naughty pygmy goats to mesmerizing emus.
Refreshments and hot cider will be served.

Admission donation is a can of cat or dog food per person (please be as generous as most folks bring a case).

October Feral Spay-Neuter Clinic in Charlottesville, VA
Rikki has learned that a high-volume Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Day will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2007 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
All services provided -- sterilizations, vaccinations, and health treatments -- will be free regardless of the income of the cats' caregivers.
Two more feral cat spay/neuter clinics will be held on November 17 and December 8, 2007.
Details about October's Clinic:
Approximately 100 feral cats will be sterilized at the October 20 clinic.
A team of volunteer veterinarians will sterilize the cats, vaccinate them against rabies and distemper and eartip them for identification purposes. Veterinary technicians and trained volunteers will apply a flea and tick preventative and ear mite medication and treat the cats for any obvious ailments or infections. Following surgery, the cats will be returned to their volunteer caregivers.
Only feral cats will be accepted at the clinic. (Feral cats are the untamed offspring of stray or abandoned cats.)
Making Spay-Neuter Appointments
Appointments are required. Drop-ins will not be allowed. Cats must be brought to the clinic in humane traps, which can be borrowed from the clinic cosponsor, Voices for Animals. To make spay/neuter appointments, reserve humane traps, and get details about the location of the clinic, call 434-979-1200 or e-mail feralcats@voicesforanimals.org.
Appointment spaces are filling up quickly, so call or e-mail soon to ensure that your ferals get added to the schedule.

Over 50 volunteers are needed for jobs such as admissions assistant, trap transport, anesthesia assistant, bladder express, spay boards assistant, shaving, pre-surgical monitoring, fluid administration, post-surgery ear and wound cleaning, administration of flea/tick and ear mite preventatives, recovery room monitor, instrument cleaning, and discharge assistant.

Prince George's Compassion Project will be hosting a Feral Cat Summit in Forestville, MD on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 9am to 5pm. Voices' for Animals board member Mary Ellen Drayer and Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA Executive Director Susanne Kogut will be speaking at the Summit, which will cover topics of interest to anyone involved in feral cat advocacy, humane alternatives for helping homeless animals, and the nuts and bolts of TNR programs.
Registration includes a delicious hot vegan lunch, a copy of "Implementing a Community Trap-Neuter-Return Program" by Bryan Kortis, and other materials. The Summit will be held at the Prince George's County Educators' Association Center at 8008 Marlboro Pike, Forestville, MD 20747. 4,931 Cans of Cat Food Arriving
But when you divide it between 638 cats, that's only 7.73 ounces each. About the equivalent of one can of regular cat food plus one can the size of the Fancy Feast. Most of the cats here consider that far less than a full day's meal.
But the cupboards are bare of dry and at approximately 1:57 p.m. on Monday one of the 638 cats will reach into the food bowl for a bite, and get the last morsel. Where will dinner come from? 1,257 little eyes are looking at you (we have 17 one eye-ed cats, and Little Charlie was born with none) and pleading for salvation.
The dog pantry is full of dry and they have offered to share with the cats. Especially since Vincent forfeited his spoils as the winner of the Spring Fundraiser, and donated it all to the dogs. Who by the way, have most generously, helped many of the animals at Rikki's Refuge pay for their food and medical care. Even though this is a most generous offer, the cats are disgusted at the very thought of eating dawg food.
But the dogs are begging for canned. Around here, it sure seems like you can't please anybody any at the time! The dogs say they know it is summer, and they know most of them are fat, but they still don't want to give up their canned breakfast. By Wednesday they will have eaten the last morsel of canned dog food. Big Lots has six cans of Alpo for $2.50, and the dogs like it.

Meet Miner !
Miner is now 10 weeks of age and the sweetest baby girl in the whole wide world! Weighing in at a meager 2 lbs, she has a big purrsonality and a lot of determination! She was hit by a car a couple of weeks ago and brought to the shelter with a broken right front leg. She hopped about in her big red cast until this morning when she was given her freedom to move around (giving herself a bath was her first order of business!).
She has permanent nerve damage and may or may not require amputation in the future. Basically, when she was run over, her leg went one way and her body another so that the nerves are permanently damaged and her tendon stretched. Despite this, Miner runs and plays with the best of them and is quite the active child! Social with other cats and with nice dogs, she loves attention and wants to be "with" her people!
She flips over for belly rubs and she purrs frequently and loudly! Miner is looking for a loving home where she will always be spoiled and can live an indoor life. She would prefer to have at least one other animal (or more!) in the household with whom to play and snuggle. She would benefit greatly from some physical therapy.

Nurse Parfait Works in the Leukemia Wing
She's the dilute calico on the right. A precious gentle senior lady, with leukemia herself, is a great help to the other patients. She comforts, she bathes, and she shares her food. This is Hank, one of the biggest boys in the leukemia house, who she's taking care of here.

Ooops - What's Going on in Here in the Middle of the Night?
Brain-damaged cross eyed Bumble and standoffish former feral Gloria, now a kidney patient in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center, seem to have a very special and close relationship. I've caught them several times in the middle of the night when I've come over and flicked on the light to check on everybody.

Inappropriate Behavior?
I have no idea what you're talking about. I was just counseling her about life on three legs. As I mentioned earlier, Vincent has been spending some time in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center, following a short illness, and trying to get his paper towel habit back under control. Meanwhile, Victoria in Cat House #1, is missing Vincent, in hopes he will be able to return soon.
